Tuesday morning I went to check the 'cougar area'. I was walking slowly and quietly on a dirt trail, stopping every few metres, listening, watching, when I saw two identical birds bathing in the dirt. I couldn't identify them but they were shaped like Northern Flickers. It turns out that there are female Red-shafted Northern Flickers (photo on the left). I assumed male & female looked the same. Photo on the right: male for reference.

There are only cute birds on Vancouver Island. I photographed this young Great Horned Owl early this morning. It left a pellet with tiny bones on the trail. Not sure if its parents are still feeding it or if it is already hunting by itself. It was with a sibling.

My favourite time of the day to photograph wildlife is early in the morning because most people and dog owners are still at home and the light is good. I also prefer less crowded areas.
Early one Sunday morning in winter, I was walking on a path near an estuary in Oyster River when I came across a sleepy Great blue heron. That was about 10 years ago and it is still one of my favourite photos.

Does anyone on Vancouver Island know who to contact to clean up a shore filled with trash. I picked up what I could but this needs a team and machinery.

There is oyster farm trash, 3 large concrete blocks filled with stirofoam, dozens of spent cartridges, lots of discarded fishing nets, small buoys, hard plastic tubes, plastic tape, cans, etc.

It's on the shore at the end of Wavell Rd, in Fanny Bay.

It's a sensitive habitat for lots of species.

#FungiFriday - Found this beauty during my Fall Colours on Vancouver Island photo workshop earlier this month. I took my guests to a trail that I call ''Mushroom Alley''. You can't walk 2 metres without spotting mushrooms of all sizes, shapes and colours.

On a recent private photo tour, while hoping to see black bears catch salmon, we heard screeching calls in the forest. 😬 Not sure what it was, we cautiously approached the area. It was two red-tailed hawks (Buteo jamaicensis).

Black bears can wait patiently for long periods of time for a salmon to get trapped in shallow waters or narrow spaces. Then, all the sudden, the bear jumps into action. They have to be quick and precise.

This bear seemed very proud of its catch. After it caught the salmon, it jumped on the sandstone in a victorious move. It almost looked like a happy dance.

Another epic day in my life as a wildlife photographer: woke up at 4 am, drove in thick fog at night to get to my favourite spot for wapiti. Got there at sunrise, saw a few separate herds but too far for good photos. Walked in the forest and stepped in a pile of wapiti shit. Later on my camera attached to my tripod fell in the stinky mud. No damage, just dirt. Never a dull moment. Had a great time! 😁

I recently witnessed amateur and wannabe pro photographers being too close to black bears in the wild. They prevented the bears from catching salmon, foraging for crabs and feeding on grass.

This type of selfish behaviour is detrimental to the survival of bears that need to fatten up before winter. There is also a risk of conflict resulting in injuries or death.

Please respect wildlife, avoid disturbing their routine, let them eat and rest, keep your dog on a leash, and keep your distance!

I recently had the privilege to witness a black bear nursing her cub in the wild on Vancouver Island. She knew that I was there but because I kept a safe and respectful distance from them, she felt comfortable to feed her cub.

Note that I used a telephoto lens and the photo is cropped.

Respect wildlife, keep a safe distance!
