My CNC's dust shoe broke several times, and now that it's more epoxy than dust shoe, I decided I'd make a new one. Because I can!

This was an interesting test of TPU for brush bristles. I ended up having to take scissors to them (they were too long), but I'm pretty happy how that turned out. Suction is decent too, which is nice.

Dear filament manufacturers: if you're going to claim your filament is 'high-flow', either provide a racetrack or shut the fuck up. Stop lying to people. IME _every time_ I have seen a 'high flow' claim, it was basically a marketing lie attached to a price increase.

Brought to you by me getting nerdsniped into testing a PETG advertised as 'high-flow'... which couldn't even beat _PETG-CF_ at the same temperature.

#3DPrinting Fedi: I am looking for a riser for the lid of my Creality K1 Max, as I'm getting a bit sick of all the reverse Bowden routing issues in the stock design. However, I need the following requirements to be met:

* No air vents in the riser, at least as an option.
* The ability to externally mount the filament sensor.
* Not too much plastic use (as far as reasonable).

Any good suggestions? I've seen a bunch of designs, but don't know which to pick.

Fun #FDM discovery yesterday. I was printing some clamps for my new CNC, and of course, I wanted the strongest material I could get my hands on. I have Polymax PC to hand, but I could also source some CF or GF nylon (also from Polymaker).

Now, one thing I learned about nylon (from this video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u8dIpwd6tzo) is that nylon is _so_ hygroscopic that finished prints absorb water and change their properties as they do so. This helped set the context for what I saw.

For my first #CNCMachining job, I decided to be on-brand. This was made using the SVG tracing functionality in UGS (so, not even proper CAM), and I ended up doing an inside-line, followed by an on-line, pass.

Whenever I see such videos, I have to ask 'which filament from which manufacturer?'. Because if you look at tests done by people like Igor from My Tech Fun, CF fills can, and _do_, make a difference mechanically.

Even if the video has some kind of clever methodology, unless it's doing a broad suite of tests across many filaments and manufacturers, all their fancy equipment means nothing and it's just elaborate clickbait.

#FDM Fedi: I'm having some weird issues at the seams of my prints, most notably with PETG. This has started happening after I moved my K1 Max's filament sensor to the outside of the printer.

Note: this is _not_ general under-extrusion. It only happens at the seam, specifically at the start of a layer. I first thought it was a PA issue, but changing PA up or down doesn't seem to affect this problem. I don't under-extrude elsewhere.

I'm having the _weirdest_ issue with Orca Slicer. At random, when I load it up, it either fails to render tab contents (the 'outer interface' renders, but the tab is a grey slab), or after a while, the tab freezes and ignores all commands (doesn't rotate, right click doesn't bring up a menu, buttons do nothing, etc).

It happens no matter what I do: AppImage, Flatpak, even a build from source! It started recently, and seems to happen largely at random.

To all people on Printables posting #FDM designs: please, for the love of $DEITY, include a STEP version! I often run into the situation where I want to make a slight modification: this is often trivial with STEP files, but _very_ non-trivial with STLs.

Furthermore, STL is a pretty awful format even for printing stuff. Basically all decent slicers can read STEP files now, there's no reason not to give us that option.

* Bambu PLA Tough+ is worse in every way (or at best, no better) than PLA Basic, except for impact resistance
* PLA Basic Silver has almost the same impact resistance as PLA Tough+, but costs considerably less

Another weekend, another tuning thread! This one comes from an interesting situation I found myself in: I needed a lot of ABS, and I needed it cheap. Normally I'd use a vendor generic (which isn't amazing but works), but I managed to find something even cheaper from said vendor, that being JAMG HE ABS.

This stuff is _hilariously_ cheap (NZD22.6, which is USD13.2 or so). Thus, let the fun begin!

After the longest print for my K1 Max on record (something like 30 hours), here we have more terrain! It's still not everything I need, but I'll have to take a filament tuning break first, as I'm almost out.

One tile _did_ fail (due to very thin vertical sections which broke), but with ABS and its low layer adhesion, that's always a risk.

This was my first proper project using ABS-GF, and I'm _really_ happy with it. Even if the grey attracts _every_ spec of dirt and grime in a ten-mile radius. Major, _major_ props to the (author of) the Gridfinity addon for #FreeCAD. The dice tray, as well as the bin for d6s, were both generated in it.

FWIW, the K1 series Flow Tech hotend is literally the same design as stock: ceramic heater, same length. The differences are:

* Cables are all at the back, unlike stock, where one is at the front for some reason; and
* There is a metal tube around the rear of the ceramic core.

This is why this trick with Unicorns can work.

AFAIK, 'Flow Tech' is just a brand. The hotends are different for each printer they support. Thus, while all Flow Tech hotends fit Flow Tech nozzles, only the K1 series hotend can fit Unicorns. This has to do with their shape and size, as they are meant to be drop-in replacements.

You could in theory build a Xenomorph: https://www.printables.com/model/1002270-xenomorph-toolhead-for-sovol-sv08 . This supports a lot of different hotends, so you could pick one you like.

#FDM folks who own a K1 series printer: I've made a discovery (well, _confirmed_ a discovery) regarding the MicroSwiss Flow Tech hotend. If you don't install the copper throat adapter, you can (and should) use Unicorn nozzles (and clones) instead of MicroSwiss's proprietary overpriced ones. They fit just fine, and work just fine.

#FDM Fedi, I need some assistance. I've just started using a 1mm nozzle (no, not a typo), and I'm getting this weird corner-rounding-type effect when printing, but _only_ from layer 2 onwards. First layers go down fine without problem.

I first thought this was a pressure advance issue, but changing that setting didn't have any effect. Even disabling pressure advance completely didn't do anything!

Does anyone have any idea what this might be and how to fix it?

Another fun discovery about my K1 Max: apparently, Creality have a firmware hack that shuts down the print camera when the chamber reads 60C. This is _not_ the camera overheating: it happens when the reading hits 60, no matter what state the camera's in.

The fix is to bodge the resistance numbers of the 'expected' chamber temperature thermistor, then make another entry that displays the 'real' temperature. I'll post it in a reply to this.

With the K1 Max now being fully upgraded and working (I hope!), time to share some of the designs I used to finish the job.

One of them is this ... plug I guess for the rear fan exhaust hole. It's a huge leaker of chamber heat, and this mod allows you to stop the leaking. It doesn't require removing the fan, or even any fasteners: just print and snap in place.

New #FDM printer, time for a new tuning thread! Since my K1 Max now has hardened gears in its extruder (after a fun aside involving a snapped shoulder bolt), we can now run abrasives all day.

Figured I'd start by trying something I've never worked with - ABS-GF. I never used something like this before, having had no source of it previously. However, I now have _two_ local vendors (meaning 'within driving distance') selling this stuff, so we're going to run it.

K1 and K1 Max operators: super important thing I discovered yesterday. The K1 and K1 Max both use graphite bushings on their X motion (not LM bearings like you would expect), and thus, your rods require oiling with something like a 3-in-1 or a sewing machine oil regularly. Yes, I am kicking myself that I now have _another_ such printer.

The difference this makes is large. Here are my X input shaper charts. You can probably guess which one is pre-grease.

So, the XPlus-3 finally died in a way I couldn't recover it from. We're talking the most spectacular case of heatcreep I have ever seen. Like, 'throat clogged with plastic, smoke out of hotend' kind of deal. I replaced its hotend with my _one_ remaining good one... which then heatcrept twice. In a row. _With ABS_. In the first three layers.

So I got a K1 Max. First actual prints off it that weren't tests or mods. These are all ABS of various kinds. Enjoy.

I recently found myself in a triple situation:

1. I needed a replacement hotend, but the only one I had was a Dragonfly BMO.
2. My toolhead doesn't support the Dragonfly BMO, only the Dragon.
3. I had just learned about STEP defeaturing in #FreeCAD

So, I did the only sensible thing: defeatured the mounting holes from the original hotend, and remade new ones. 15 minutes' work, and the result fits like a glove. The print quality is suffering from wet PETG here.

So, Polymaker came out with a new product, which claims to be a heat-resistant PLA, with impressive marketing numbers, but no TDS. Of course, Igor has us covered: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w01XqM7D8b0

Noteworthy moments for me:

* The heat resistance claimed by Polymaker is overblown, but HT-PLA still resists well over 100C.
* Annealing also helps creep, but weakens both tensile strength and layer adhesion. HT-PLA creeps a lot still.

Otherwise seems like regular PLA.

NoizieWorks has spoken to an ex-Prusa dev, and the insights are a mixture of insightful and horrifying. Some highlights, in no particular order:

So I had to interrupt my resin tuning thread because I, uhh, ran out of the resin I was tuning. Luckily I had some spare, in clear, and finally settled on a 3.4s exposure.

So, to celebrate, printing this absolutely huge fox. This thing's print height is almost 220mm, and the estimate is _under five hours_. I of course hollowed it, but even then, this is 150g of resin.

tl;dr - a Qidi Plus4's SSR (which we have been warning about since day freaking 1) finally blew and caught fire, with serious consequences.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: do not buy Qidi printers, don't suggest others buy Qidi printers. This isn't just sloppy engineering, this is outright dangerous.

Decided to print one of these today. Definitely came out great: combination of the extrusional consistency of ABS and variable layer height really did work here. I scaled up to 150% of the original size, as I found the original too small.

Biggest ABS print on record for me. Took just shy of four hours, and is basically the full Z height of my printer.

Not a flawless print, due to a noticeable tear in the perimeters (which you can just about see), unfortunately, but no warping or delamination.

I've done some PLA-CF annealing experiments before, and this mirrors what I discovered. However, these experiments printed using regular settings, rather than the typically-suggested 100% infill, and seemingly still had minimal deformation.

I'll summarize the findings, and what I think really needs to be done by someone to complete the analysis of PLA-CF annealing. (1/?)

#Resin3DPrinting folks: I'm getting some odd behaviours from my printer (and possibly my wash-and-cure), both of which most clearly manifest on large, flat surfaces. The first is this weird bubbly texture: the print in the image is fully cured and dry to the touch, but the texture persists. The second are these weird small surface lines, parallel to the build plate.

Any help figuring these out would be awesome.

Having spent a day prototyping (with sub-millimetre adjustments), I now have this replacement #3DDesign for the back toolhead cover of the XPlus-3. I'm going to resin print it, because trying to work within the constraints I'm dealing with while _also_ considering FDM printability felt like an even bigger chore.

The magnets glue into the small holes, and then the larger ones receive M2.5 caps. Yes I had to special-order magnetic M2s to go in the original screw holes.

* Bigger objects benefit from this method more than small ones
* Because of the 'shift' induced by the Ten Tech script, you need to bump your EM on the 'shifted' sections or your part gets _weaker_ due to reduced perimeter contact

So, fun #3DPrinting discovery of the day: if you babystep the Z axis on the XPlus-3, it will persist until reboot. This in itself wouldn't be a problem: the issue is that, when you start a new print, the babystepping is reset to 0, although the Z offset stays as if the babystepping was still on.

I did _not_ save this value. This is 100% whatever torment the Qidi 'engineering' team subjected Klipper to 'working'.

Garbage.

A thing I made with #FDM over the past week. This is a Gridfinity case, 6 cells by 4 cells, for someone at my LGS, in exchange for a painting commission.

Cultural learnings to make benefit glorious nation of #3DPrinting :

* Epoxy glue stinks. A lot.
* Extruding, then chamfering, SVGs is such a hard problem, I had to resort to no fewer than _three_ tools, and they still didn't do what I wanted.

I'm kind of annoyed actually. This designer does quite good work, and this is the first issue of this kind I've yet had with anything they make. It's also _really_ obvious, and would have been spotted if they did a test print. In fact, one of the _other_ community prints showed this to be an issue ... a year ago.

So... I printed the OPR model that gave me so much grief (with some UVTools help). Now begins the #Painting effort.

I tried a slightly different black preshade here. Instead of equal parts Aquadrop and water, I used a ratio of 5:3:2 of Aquadrop, water and flow aid. In retrospect, should have used more flow aid.

Work time is a real challenge for this model due to its size - the hair ended up getting too dry to work.

Having checked the model just now, the resin traps are gone from the head (although I still feel one of the horn 'tunnels' is questionable), and the base has been oriented to be 6 inch printer friendly (although I would have gone for a less steep angle for less supports). Glad this got done fairly quickly!

New year, new tuning thread! Today's filament which caught my curiosity is 3DEA's PETG-CF Pro15. This stuff is interesting because, unlike most CF filaments, its carbon fibres are concentrated in its core, leaving an outer jacket of pure material. As if to flex this fact, it is available both in black and in white: I am printing the white today.

This is similar to the techniques used by Essentium for their HTN-CF25, but the CF load is higher.

V6 is probably a safe choice. I would recommend a Dragon as your hotend (SF is recommended if you want to print PLA at all, HF if not), and those take V6s while having a rigid mount and a one-handed tighten. I hardly run a thing else.

For #Resin3DPrinting folks: do _not_ buy 'Sunlu 14K ABS-like' resin. While regular Sunlu ABS-like is great, this stuff is _absolute garbage_. It's extremely brittle (I've had prints snap when removing supports), gets weird air bubbles in it (see pictures) and in general is fussy, hard to tune in, and will give you nothing but anguish.

Now my drawer of Gridfinity is done! The plate there is printed out of PET-CF (not _PETG_-CF, _PET_-CF), which is the stiffest material I have, and has heatset inserts in it, which receive 12mm BSHC M3s that go through the magnet holes of the Gridfinity, that just so happen to be the right size.

I added lots of extra holes in case I needed them, but it turned out only 10 was enough. Oh, and that I need more 12mm BSHCs.
