Potable water isn’t always accessible. Even international NGO workers bathe with only partially desalinated water from the Mediterranean. Costs stay high becauseIsrael had a blockade on any electronics entering the Strip. More than 70% of the housing stock is destroyed or damaged/inhospitable.

In addition to caring for his wife and two kids, Mohamadsohiel (npub1ygx…0r44) works to help his larger family of 10 people. To care for this group (including food, cooking/energy sources, etc.) it costs $100-$150 per day. Furthermore, just the cost of renting a place for a tent is at least $170/month. Apartment rents are $1500-$2000/month.

Additionally, even this 2G network is often suspended or blocked for days at a time. When Gazans try to post here or on other socials to show their reality and raise funds, the posts don’t always go through. Gazans can also purchase WiFi access cards that give them access to slow WiFi connections for ~$7/day.

Israel has throttled mobile data across Gaza so that the network operates using a 2G system, with a max download to 50kbps. Most countries have already phased out 2G. This means that even when someone can afford to charge their mobile phones, trying to send photos or videos of what is happening on the ground, the images may not upload.

The cost of buying a solar panel in Gaza is ~$2500. Similar panels are sold in the USA and EU for under $300/€300. Additionally, for electricity after dark, one needs to have a 12V 75 Amp battery, which will cost another $2500-$3000. Batteries like this also cost ~$300 in the USA.

The only way people can access electricity is by purchasing it by the kiloWatt-hour (kWh) from folks running diesel generators. The current price in Gaza is $10 per kWh. To put that in perspective, Californians pay $0.20-$0.34per kWh, and Germans pay about €0.40 per kWh of electricity. It’s a struggle and hardship to just charge a phone in Gaza.
