🔒 Study: 72% of subsea cables would need to fail to impact Bitcoin

Research from the Cambridge Centre for Alternative Finance has for the first time quantified the critical failure threshold of submarine cables required to significantly impact the Bitcoin network. Conducted by researchers Wenbin Wu and Alexander Neumueller using P2P network data from 2014 to 2025 and 68 verified cable failure events, the study finds that between 72% and 92% of all intercontinental submarine cables would need to fail simultaneously before more than 10% of network nodes disconnect.

The network shows greater vulnerability to targeted attacks on strategic cable chokepoints, however, with researchers describing this vector as "an order of magnitude more effective" than random failures — a critical threshold of just 5% to 20% of cables could cause substantial disruption if selectively targeted.

The study also highlights the role of Tor in strengthening network resilience. With 64% of Bitcoin nodes concealing their physical location through Tor, and relay infrastructure concentrated in well-connected European countries such as Germany, France, and the Netherlands, researchers conclude that "Tor adoption enhances resilience within the current relay geography, rather than introducing hidden fragilities."

Nostria has come a long way since its inception, and with the release of version 2.0, we are excited to introduce a host of new features and improvements that will enhance your experience on our decentralized social networking platform.

All development happens in the open for Nostria, so if you've already been using it, you will already have experienced some of these new features.

What's New in Nostria 2.0

Music /music

Nostria 2.0 introduces native support for music sharing and discovery. Users can now upload, share, and listen to music tracks directly within the platform. This feature includes playlist creation and track uploading. Earn zaps and give appreciation to your favorite artists directly through zapping. When you publish music track or playlists, you can choose a custom set of relays, ensuring your music is available where you want it to be. We've also improved the music player, with three different views, including one that mimics WinAmp with a functional equalizer. You can also view song lyrics.

Search /search

Finding content and users on a decentralized platform can be challenging. Nostria 2.0 includes a powerful search feature that allows users to search for posts, profiles, and hashtags across the entire network, making it easier to discover new content and connect with others.

Live Streams /streams

We've further enhanced our live streaming capabilities, with an improved interface, chat replies and emojii reactions. We've integrated the Game API which shows rich details about the game being played during a live stream. It's easier to hide the stream chat and stream info, giving you a fully impressive experience.

Articles /articles

We added a dedicated section for long-form articles, allowing users to publish and read in-depth content. Articles support rich formatting, images, and links, making it easy to share detailed information and stories. It has now been removed from the default feeds.

Summary /summary

This is a powerful feature that provides users with an hourly, daily or weekly summary of their activities, interactions, and important updates on the platform. It presents a compressed timeline view that makes it easy to catch up on what you've missed.

Messages /messages

Improved support for remote signer, relying on a queue system to ensure the relays and signer is not overwhelmed with requests. Nostria is already behaving well with extension signers, avoiding many popups before the user interacts. Added search for messages, making it easier to find specific conversations.

Notifications /notifications

Improved the display of notifications, showing preview for all kinds of events. Added search for notifications, making it easier to find specific interactions.

Discover /discover

New section to discover content, profiles and more. Each category contains curated lists to help you find interesting content and people to follow.

Publish Media

There is a new option to publish media content. This is a simpler way to share images and videos. When you publish media, your content is then optimized for display in apps that support media events. Nostria will automatically post a short form post with a preview of the media, making it discoverable across all types of Nostr clients. You find it when you click the "+" button to create a new post. You can quickly capture a photo with your phone and publish in seconds.

Remote Signer

Improved support for remote signer through client-initiated connection. This allows users to connect to their remote signer by simply scanning a QR code, without needing to manually enter connection details.

Content Reveal

You can now choose ‘Always reveal content from this user,’ which lets you automatically see their media even if you don’t follow them.

Profile Discovery

Nostria is built on the outbox model, which makes it possible to scale globally with ease. Everyone can post on their own relays, anywhere in the world, and still be discoverable by others. Unfortunately a lot of users on Nostr have been moving across multiple relays, often not bringing with them their profile information (and other events). With Nostria 2.0, we have implemented a robust profile discovery mechanism that will find a user profile, even when it's not available on the user's own relays - and then automatically publish their profiles to their relays, making them easily discoverable by others.

Calendars

The world is big and it has many languages and cultures. To better support this diversity, we've added support for multiple calendar systems in Nostria 2.0. Users can now choose their preferred calendar system, such as Gregorian, Chronia (13 months) and Ethiopian. While the whole app is not translated to all supported languages yet, we did add Spanish and French just recently. There is so much new features added still, so when there is less new stuff, we will focus more on translations.

Premium

We've given some love to our Premium subscription service, adding new features and benefits for our subscribers.

YouTube /youtube

Premium users can now add YouTube channels in the app, to get a distraction free experience when watching videos.

Memos /memos

Memos allows you to keep private notes and thoughts, which are only visible to you.

Analytics (Beta) /analytics

Get insights into your profile's performance, including follower growth, engagement metrics, and content reach. This is early preview of the feature, it will get many improvements over time.

Backup /backup

Added an automatic backup of your following lists. This will help you avoid loosing your follows, which can happen when you use the same account across multiple clients. If you get into trouble one day, you can either restore an older list or merge (combine) your current list with the backup.

As a followup of our previous (and first) Nostr adventure at FOSDEM 2025 (see my review here), we submitted the following applications for FOSDEM 2026:

All of the above have been declined by the organization. So there will be almost no Nostr at FOSDEM 2026. Here is the list of all accepted stands and developer rooms.

For the Collaboration and content management devroom I've applied for talk / demo about POSSE content with Drupal using Nostr. That submission is accepted. Next month I will prepare this 30-min talk and will do a try-out at the next Tech Tuesday gathering (January 13 2025) at Wonders of Work. Everyone is welcome to join and I will try to setup a livestream (and record it) as well!

Web of Trust foundation

In november 2025 together with Jeroen and Constant, I co-founded the Web of Trust foundation. This foundation is now a legal entity in The Netherlands under the RSIN number 868705251. As of this writing, we're managing all the administrative payload to get the foundation fully up and running. Here is the website we're currently working out: https://weboftrustfoundation.com.

Kubo.watch

Part of our Web of Trust foundation initiative, we're working on a project called Kubo.watch. The goal is to build a Nostr application for our youngsters and to have a YouTube Kids alternative (because YouTube Kids is broken) where parents have full agency over the media content their children are interacting with.

Nuxtstack

Similar to MKstack (used by shakespeare.diy to create Nostr web applications) I've created a stack for building web applications using Nuxt (which uses the Vue Javascript framework). The reason why I did this is because I saw Jeroen struggling (burning tokens) using Replit for building the Web of Trust Foundation and Kubo.watch websites. Now he should be able to use Nuxtstack to accomplish the same but with a far more convenient (cheaper!) workflow. This is the theory, we have not started to validate this in practice.

Trust is not an absolute quantity. It is deeply personal, contextual, and always relative. In centralized systems, we have become accustomed to trust being imposed upon us by platforms and institutions, a "blue check" or a hidden algorithm deciding who is trustworthy for everyone.

But this model misunderstands the nature of trust, especially in decentralized systems like Nostr. Trust is a scaling solution, the fundamental mechanism that reduces friction in complex systems, allowing us to cooperate beyond our immediate relationships.

We built Relatr to reclaim this mechanism. Relatr is a service that anyone can run, computing trust scores based on the perspective of a specific source. It embraces the relative, dynamic, and layered nature of trust, empowering individuals and communities to define what trust means to them.

Today, we are releasing Relatr v0.1, with significant architectural improvements powered by the new Nostr Social Duck library. This update solves critical scaling challenges and makes running your own trust engine more accessible than ever.

A Transparent Algorithm

At its core, Relatr computes trust from a specific source public key perspective. Because decentralized networks like Nostr lack a global state, there is no "global reputation." Instead, we rely on social graph proximity together with objective validations. While Relatr includes some default validations like NIP-05 domain checks, relay lists, and Lightning address verification, among others, the system is fundamentally flexible. You can customize it with any validation rule, enabling highly specific trust models tailored to your needs.

This flexibility enables Relatr to serve diverse use cases. Individuals might prioritize social connections, while businesses or communities can configure their instance to validate specific badges, memberships, or other criteria, effectively creating their own Web of Trust metrics based on their own standards. At its core, Relatr embraces the relativity of trust and context. We are still working to make custom validations more accessible and intuitive, but the framework is already extensible enough for anyone to create custom validation rules.

The Challenge

In our initial release, we used a combination of the nostr-social-graph library for social graph distance calculations and SQLite for profile metadata. While this worked well for looking up the score of single pubkeys, it struggled with search. Search is a much more nuanced operation than calculating a score for a given pubkey.

Consider a search for "Alex". This query could potentially return thousands of matches. To find the profiles relevant to you, we must filter and rank these thousands of candidates by their trust score, and then return the top results.

In our previous architecture, the "phone book" (names) and the "social map" (distances and validations) lived in separate systems. We had to fetch large batches of potential matches, calculate trust scores for each individually, and then sort them. This approach was inefficient and prone to making servers hang under load. Returning all potential matches is very expensive and inefficient, so we opted to add a multiplier to the search limit to keep computation under control. However, this limit approach was quite arbitrary: too few possible matches and we missed relevant people; too many or all matches, and performance and response times became unpredictable.

The Solution: Nostr Social Duck

We needed a way to improve this, to query metadata and social graph distance simultaneously while keeping resource requirements low. In other words, we had to shift the concept of the query from returning all matches from "Alex", to returning the most relevant "Alex". After some research, we found an answer that fits our needs.

Enter DuckDB.

DuckDB is an embedded, in-process SQL database designed for high-performance analytics. Crucially, it handles memory management gracefully. When a query requires more memory than is available, DuckDB spills to disk rather than crashing. This allows us to perform complex graph analysis on modest hardware.

We built Nostr Social Duck (NSD), a library that leverages DuckDB to perform graph operations over Nostr data. If you are interested in learning more about NSD, you can visit its repository, and read this nevent1q…sp6h">introductory note

With this in place, we could move both the social graph and profile metadata into a unified DuckDB instance, transforming the search problem. Now, in a single SQL query we can:

Find profiles matching "Alex" across metadata fields Calculate their social distance from the source key Apply validation criteria Return ranked results

This unified approach allows us to pre-rank and return the most relevant results from the entire dataset in milliseconds, not just a random subset.

Performance and Accessibility

One of our core goals is to ensure Relatr can be self-hosted by anyone, not just those with powerful servers.

The results of this refactor have been excellent. Our public Relatr instance currently runs on a $4 VPS. Even on this constrained hardware, it can handle hundreds of requests per minute with graceful performance degradation. We conducted some naive benchmarking and stress testing, achieving ~30ms response times for searches under normal load and ~300ms response times during peak stress periods. In the other hand the pubkey lookup method demonstrated response times from ~2ms under normal load, to ~30ms under heavy load.

This efficiency makes the results feel instant and can satisfy various application use cases, such as tagging and quick search, among others. Additionally, you can deploy your own trust engine on almost any hardware, including a Raspberry Pi, an Umbrel node, a low-cost cloud server, or even a phone, without significant expense and with reasonable responsiveness. The disk requirements are also quite low; currently, our public instance, which contains more than 300k relationships, along with profile metadata and validations, uses just ~200MB.

Ecosystem Adoption and Use Cases

We cannot conclude this article without mentioning the community's response to Relatr, which is already being integrated into several projects:

The potential use cases for Web of Trust on Nostr are extensive, and Relatr's self-hostable design makes it ideal for integration into clients for personalized scoring, tagging, search, and recommendations, among others.

We're also participating in the #WoTathon organized by Nosfabrica, which is advancing important discussions around Web of Trust implementations. This initiative inspires us to integrate NIP-85 trusted assertions into Relatr, providing another interface for developers and users to leverage Relatr's capabilities.

Seamless Integration

We want to make it trivial for developers to add "Web of Trust" features to their apps.

With CtxCn, integrating Relatr is as simple as running one command in your project:

npx @contextvm/ctxcn add

This generates a fully-typed, readable TypeScript client directly in your codebase. You own the code, it's easy to maintain, and it connects immediately to the specified Relatr instance.

But you're not limited to TypeScript. Relatr uses the ContextVM protocol, so in practice, if you can call a DVM, you can call any Relatr instance. The interaction follows a simple Nostr event pattern that works with any programming language.

To call Relatr tools like search_profiles or calculate_trust_score, you send a Nostr event of kind 25910 containing a request. The event must tag the Relatr instance's pubkey and include your call in the content field.

Example request structure:

Note: The content field should be stringified.

Listening for responses: Responses come as Nostr events from the Relatr instance, tagged with your pubkey. The response contains the result with trust-scored profiles and metrics.

Run Your Own Instance

Relatr is designed to be self-hostable and accessible. You can deploy it in multiple ways, we provide Docker images for easy deployment, you can have a Relatr instance running in minutes. For custom configurations or development, you can build Relatr from source. The project uses TypeScript and Bun, and the repository contains comprehensive documentation on configuration options, custom validation rules, and more.

Conclusion

Relatr represents more than just a tool for us, it is a statement that in a decentralized world, trust cannot be outsourced. It must be claimed as our own.

The evolution from our initial architecture to the current Nostr Social Duck-powered implementation marks significant progress in making trust metrics accessible, efficient, and scalable. With v0.1, we've established a foundation that empowers individuals, communities, and businesses to define their own trust models.

Looking ahead, we're focusing on several key enhancements. We're working to make validation customization more intuitive for non-developers, moving beyond the current approach that requires modifying Relatr's source code. Performance optimization remains a priority to ensure efficient operations across the board. We're actively incorporating community feedback and exploring the integration of NIP-85 trusted assertions to provide additional interfaces for developers. Additionally, we will expand our documentation to facilitate easier integration of Relatr into any Nostr application.
