The last weeks he added another point on the "why" list.

The heads of the Iranian regime are baddies. They are ruthless mass murderers and they are exporting violence and terrorism. And I don't doubt for a second that they would love to have nuclear weapons.

One thing that never ceases to fascinate me:

Small, thoroughly unremarkable companies try to emulate wildly successful ones by copying some tertiary, sometimes even actively annoying property.

Take Apple and its near-religious obsession with packaging. Their boxes are sturdy, elegant, and engineered with the kind of care normally reserved for spacecraft or Swiss watches.

So naturally, companies selling $9.99 gadgets have concluded that this is the secret sauce. Not the product. Not the ecosystem. Not the brand. No, clearly it’s the box.

What they fail to realize is that I keep an iPhone box because the device inside retains resale value. The packaging is essentially a reusable shipping container with aspirations.

The cheap gadget, on the other hand, has the resale value of an expired, half-eaten sandwich. Its box is therefore not a feature but a long-term storage problem. A nearly indestructible one. I suspect some of these packages will outlive civilization and be excavated by future archaeologists, who will conclude that we worshipped mediocre Bluetooth speakers.

Another favorite is the imitation of Google’s customer interaction model, or rather, the strategic absence of it.

Companies observe that Google doesn’t talk to its customers and infer that this must be part of the winning formula. What they miss is that Google succeeds despite this, not because of it. When you control half the internet, you can afford to be aloof. When you sell niche SaaS to 50 customers in a easily offended corner of Germany, less so.

Yet here we are, with companies proudly offering the full “Google experience”: no support, no accountability, and a contact form that disappears into a small, silent void, presumably to be studied later by theoretical physicists.

It’s a bit like copying the table manners of a king while lacking both the kingdom and the food.

I suppose this is the corporate equivalent of a cargo cult: build the runway, light the torches, and hope that success will land.

This text is an attempt to step outside both positions. The goal is not to defend or attack AI, but to understand it: to explore why it is simultaneously glorified and vilified, and what a more realistic trajectory might look like.

There is, of course, much more to AI than its generative capabilities. But much of the current discourse collapses these distinctions. For the sake of consistency, this text will do the same.

I regularly use unique Email addresses and not all of them are documented. I guess that 5 years means 500+ email addresses.

HaveIBennPwned quite often informs me, how wise that move is 🙂. Do they allow wildcards in email addresses?

There are several more "no go" points in that text. And if a relative would hand out any information about me, I would consider that a breach of trust. So I won't do that either.

I think any person wanting to visit the U.S. at the current state must be completely nuts.

During my youth I was raised on a diet of U.S. culture: the Ponderosa Ranch felt as familiar as the bridge of the USS Enterprise.The good night to John boy was often also the signal for me that I had to go to bed now. From the moment I earned my own money, I started spending as many vacations in the United States as my budget allowed.

Most of the books I have read and I am reading have been written by U.S. authors. Most of the movies and TV series I see were made by Hollywood companies. A significant part of my verbal and written output is in a language different from my mother tongue.

Today I would say that my command of the English language, my knowledge of U.S. history and culture easily surpasses that of the current commander in chief.

But other than with Randahl, the cracks in the relationship started to show much earlier. When I came to the U.S. in October 2001, it felt like a different country. I no longer felt welcome and therefore no longer came visiting.

A friend of mine, who was working in the U.S. at that time and who was on his way to earning a U.S. citizenship was told by a border agent: "Shut up little shit, I can do with you whatever I want." His sin was to point out the regulations my friend knew much better than that agent. He terminated his job at the next occasion.

There were many such moments and every time, another fatigue fracture in my relationship to the United States appeared.

Trump is for me just the nail in the coffin. It is very big and tough nail, because he was elected a second time. Everyone knew what kind of man they elected. And they chose to do so nonetheless. I cannot and will not forget that.

I see the protests, I hear the voices of dissent but I also see the big passive masses, that accept what is happening. It is the same kind of silence my ancestors emitted when Hitler started his run.

Yes, I still have a lot of friends and other people in the U.S. I feel attached to and care a lot about. But for the country as a hole, I no longer give a damn fuck.

In my job "Pacta sunt servanda" is a very important phrase. I cannot do my work without trust.

**I am convinced that the current U.S. will not abide any contract, any agreement, any promise if the big orange baby doesn't see a personal advantage in it.** And I cannot have a relationship with someone I do not respect and trust.

It's as simple as that.

I want to use the last day of the year to thank the community here on Mastodon.

Every day, I learn things here that are worth learning. The discussions are, by Internet standards, very polite and focused on the issues.

But most importantly, I see people here having a voice that they do not have in traditional media or in algorithm-driven social media.

That makes Mastodon extremely valuable, and we should all strive to preserve that.

The year 2025 has been a tough one, and I have little optimism that 2026 will be easier. We will likely see a further rise in authoritarianism, fascism, and racism.

To stem the tide, we must work together. My wish for the coming year is that we continue to see others fighting the same fight as allies, even if they have different priorities for where they invest their energy.

But please take care of yourselves. Do not feel guilty about time spent on self-maintenance. Keep this in mind: **You can only help others if you are first in a position to do so.**

History lesson: The murder of Thomas BecketThomas Becket was Archbishop of Canterbury in England during the reign of King Henry II. He initially served as Lord Chancellor to the king and was even entrusted with the care of the crown prince, who lived in his household. At some point, Becket received the highly prized bishopric of Canterbury. After this appointment, however, the famous transformation of Becket into an ascetic occurred.

This led to a growing rift between Thomas Becket and the king, as Becket sought to recover and extend the rights of the Church of Canterbury. This resulted in a series of escalating conflicts with Henry II, including a dispute over the jurisdiction of secular courts over English clergymen. The antagonism between Becket and the king intensified. Becket was accused and eventually convicted of contempt of royal authority and malfeasance in his former role as chancellor, which forced him to flee the country. After the intervention of the pope, he was allowed to return to England.

The year is 2025, 80 years after World War 2 ended. About 7.000 people of my hometown will spend today Sunday being evacuated from their home, waiting in a school, gym or elsewhere and coming back in the afternoon.

As already several time this year, a dud bomb from WW2 is the reason. As a submarine harbor, the town was bombed quite extensively. In 90 attacks about 44.000 explosive bombs, 900 block busters and half a million incendiary bombs were dropped. About 10% of those were duds.

The obvious ones were deposed immediately after, but thousands buried themselves deep into the ground. You can find unexploded bombs up to 10m deep into the ground.

Even after decades of intense searching, there are still many left. Nobody knows exactly how many are still to be found. A rough estimate is, that there are still about 100 in my hometown alone.

Whenever you want to build something here, you have to ask for an analysis for unexploded ordnance first. This is a major delay and in complicated areas can take weeks or months.

If areal photography hints on possible duds, an exploratory digging starts. If they find something, the disposal team comes on a Sunday.

Why on a Sunday? To keep the economic impact low, they do it on a non-business day. They need to clear a lot of area. And it is good they do, because not always a disposal is possible and the bomb has to be blown up.

And sometimes the disposal team never comes home ever again.

Whenever you read: "The war has ended" **that is a lie.** The killing may stop but the dying and suffering doesn't.

That part of the war will drag on for at least some decades.

Some areas from World War One (110 years past) are still unsafe.

In 1999 another company wanted to discuss buying my company. We were both selling Internet access, building web pages and online shops, and doing what was then considered “cutting edge” technology.

We already had some commercial ties with them, and they had just been bought by a large investor. After that, they approached us to see whether we would be willing to join the club. Because of those existing ties, we sent two of the five owners to the meeting. I was one of them.

That meeting turned out to be one of the most surreal experiences of my life. They wanted to buy us to **increase** their cash burn rate, since, as they explained, “the valuation of a company is higher if it burns more cash.” My comment that we were actually earning money was met with: “I guess you can fix that.”

When I asked about their concept for integrating our company, their reply was (and I am not exaggerating): “Here you see our current org chart and as you notice, we have two free slots there and there.” That was the entire plan. They only had positions for the two people sitting in the room. We were not a big shop, just twenty-something employees, but this was utterly absurd.

The meeting went on like this for another hour. Afterwards we decided not to pursue the talks any further. We rated the chances of ever seeing the money they promised as pretty slim. They wanted to pay in stock with a two-year mandatory holding period.

It did not surprise us that they folded less than twelve months later. Their CEO, who didn't attend that meeting because we were too small a fish, eventually ended up in prison for an impressive list of crimes.

**orphean task:** when you almost succeed, but lose everything the moment you turn around to check your progress.

**daedalean task:** when you’re forced to design something brilliant and functional… that you yourself will inevitably become trapped inside.

**medusan task:** when your project becomes so horrifying that everyone involved freezes in place rather than deal with it.

**tantaline task:** when success is right there, but bureaucracy or budget cuts keep snatching it away at the last moment, forever.

**pandoran task:** when fixing one small issue unleashes a thousand new ones, but hey — at least there’s still hope somewhere in the ticket backlog.

**odyssean task:** when the assignment technically has an end, but it’s buried under so many side quests that you forget what the original goal was.

**narcissian task:** when the entire effort is about maintaining appearances rather than achieving anything of substance.

Das was die Eva Wolfangel (npub1fxr…dgxg) [hier](https://chaos.social/@evawolfangel/115485220065703722 ) berichtet, passt zu anderen Berichten über den Einsatz von KI bei der Telefonie von Arztpraxen.

**Die KI legt auch bei ungelösten Anliegen einfach auf.**

Wenn das so weitergeht, werden wir KI und #Doctolib als Ursache auf Totenscheinen brauchen.

Das kann alles IMHO nicht reschtskonform sein, was da gerade passiert.

Zum Glück ist bei meinen Ärzten kein Doctolib aufgetaucht, aber das ist leider nur eine Frage der Zeit.

P.S. Ich vermute die KI an der Hotline ist eine Leistung von Doctolib. Das weiß ich aber nicht sicher, weiß das jemand gesichert?

Bei uns ist eine Straße seit einem Jahr “wegen eines Radweges” gesperrt.

Die Qualität der Arbeit ist beschissen (der ist unbenutzbar) und sie haben sich da auch was rechtswidriges überlegt. Und nun zwingt das Innenministerium die zum Rückbau.

**This is a valuable lesson for any manufacturer:** never awaken the nerd sleeping inside your customer, because his wrath shall be terrible.

In this case the warning was quite literal.

The company annoyed a buyer enough to push him into full blown nerd mode. He tore the product apart, reverse engineered every part, and then published a step by step guide showing exactly how to disable "kill switch" that prevented the use of the product without the vendor spying on the user.

What started as a minor grievance became a public, technical exposé that left the maker exposed and embarrassed.

**Moral of the story: underestimate your users at your own peril.**
