Let's talk about #Linux distributions, applications, end of life and unsupported software, and all of that stuff, because as the "distro vs apps" debate heats up again, I think it's time we finally learned that graphical apps shouldn't be correlated to the system's base in any way, shape or form.

Let's see why Linux distros need to evolve now:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ebkQq5TcMw

This week's #Linux and #OpenSource News video is a bit early this week, as I won't be available tomorrow (another #Warhammer tournament!).

In this one, we have Torvalds talking about A.I. in two different ways, and also talking about the "social" aspect of Open Source, we have Wayland beating x11 in gaming benchmarks, and Age Verification growing quietly in a lot of countries:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8NePj4xHU8I

Here is this week's #Linux and #OpenSource News video, where we might have been handed the biggest opportunity we've ever had to take over the PC market, through gaming, and then using that installed base to push towards more desktop use.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KWxTP8FDocg

It's been brought to my attention that my coverage of GNOME 49 was sub-par in some areas, notably the papers PDF viewer, and the Calendar changes.

One of these issues seems to stem from a naming issue: what I call "annotating" a PDF is adding inline text zones. A pop-up note that you click on isn't an "annotation", at least it isn't in the French sense of the word. But yes, paper does have "annotations"s as a sticky note on top of a PDF.

As per Calendar, I missed a bunch of changes in there.

In this week's #Linux & #OpenSource News video, there's an X.org fork surrounded by some pretty weird controversies, we have Denmark beginning the switch to Linux and Open Source, and Google making changes to Android source code's release that will definitely make custom ROMs a lot harder to build:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GWlAKTDrWwY

To be clear: I’m not saying the GIMP name is awesome and should be kept at all costs. It can change.

What I’m saying is: focus on the cool stuff first, praise the devs for their cool work. Don’t turn all the cool stuff into a battle. We can talk about the name AND also think the devs delivered some great stuff.

Firefox is adding excellent features. Sure, the Mozilla stuff sucks, but the browser is great. We can give praise AND also raise issues, not everything needs to be back or white.

Early video today, just because I didn't feel like waiting for the usual publishing time :)
In this #Linux and #OpenSource News video, we have the Freedesktop.org project (and all it hosts, so Mesa, X.org, Wayland, and more) looking for new, expensive hosting.

We also have #Debian leaving X/Twitter (congrats on that, btw), Facebook blocking links and mentions of Linux for a while, and more!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k7QDZpAR1Gc

OpenAI accusing DeepSeek, another AI model, of stealing their outputs to train their own model is the funniest thing I’ve read this year.

« This thing is stealing our work that we built by stealing other people’s work and paraphrasing it incorrectly ». Peak 2025.
