Also, a problem with a web of trust based on meeting someone IRL is that it reveals the social graph. Even if your legal name isn't attached to it, once your enemy (govt, corpo, etc) successfully deanonymizes a few people, that narrows down who everyone else could be.

I guess it'd at least be more censorship-resistant than a google- or govt-run verification method, but still far from ideal...

But yeah, unused areas can probably be filled - if you search for "deep mine backfilling" you'll find some companies selling devices to make that more efficient.

If instead of parsing it once, checking the parsed form, and then immediately using it, or, alternatively, serializing it into a fresh file that contains only verified data and can be used later

If instead of doing that you parse the input file at two different times, once to check and once to use

That's called TOCTOU, right?

Also, I don't get the whole "shoved it down" part. Nobody can force you to update. If you have a working system on a particular computer that runs eg. Xorg and ALSA, why would you care what's in the newer version?

Well, a scalper's business model relies on buying early, then selling to people who are willing to pay more that the scalper paid.

But people who were willing to pay more than the scalper paid would've already bought the card before the scalper did.

And people who didn't buy the card are the ones who were holding out for a lower price, so they won't buy from the scalper anyway*

Therefore, the scalper is stuck with unsellable inventory

I have an idea how to solve GPU scalping an you're gonna hate it:

Dutch auction.

Have the vendor sell at a ridiculously high price initially, and then lower the price, by say, 1% every few hours, until it sells out, or until it reaches vendor's cost. And have a public count of how many are left.

After a few days, the price would reach sth similar to todays' MSRPs, but anyone who wants to buy earlier would have to pay extra.
