I also hate how frequently these 'beginner' distros use the Calamares installer. Like sure, it looks nice, but it's kinda dogshit otherwise. No other installer that I've used breaks as often and as hard as Calamares does. I will never forget the time it straight up disallowed me to continue with an installation because I was using an 800x600 screen, which it apparently thought was too small. No way around it, either. Just a message to 'get a bigger screen'.

Whenever something happens that alienates and pushes people off a platform, it usually is followed by some adjustment on the admin side or some justification on the user side as to why it's no longer an issue (even if it still is). While I think the problem that caused me to leave FA for good was mostly properly handled in the end, it was deeply off-putting to me how it was handled before a large number of people protested and started leaving, and it taints my sense of it being truly "fixed" when loss of revenue is what caused the admin behavior to change. I get that running a platform and keeping the peace is a MASSIVE undertaking, and shit happens, but I don't leave platforms the way I left FA (and a number of other platforms) over issues I see as fixable. I hate having to leave over it, but for FA, all I need to do is look at historically just how many times the site admin has thrown shit at the fan to feel that it can't be a proper home for me anymore. Something else will happen. Eventually.

I wish that companies were at least upfront with customers about the fact that they could just kill an entire platform / make their product and any dependent products completely worthless once they get bored with it. I've once again taken my eye to VR despite being kinda broke, and I noticed a bunch of HP Reverb headsets going for less than $80 because Microsoft decided that mixed reality is no longer their problem and Fuck Everyone who Bought It™. from the other information I have, this looks like a configuration issue. I'm not a Fedora expert by any means, but I once got close to the exact issue with archlinux once. I did something the system didn't expect with the root partition, which caused a hang during boot. The issue was with the initial ramdisk, which I had to reconfigure with mkinitcpio because even though I corrected the fstab, the initial ramdisk was still checking for the now incorrect system details. Check for something similar with fedora maybe?

I like aesthetics, but if it interferes with usability, I'll want to get rid of it. This approaches a line with that for me, no matter what "eye tracking research" they say they've done.

I think the fact that linus himself has such a well-known history of vocal aggression towards other programmers kinda encourages others to act similarly, but in light of their own personal opinions. I mean, I understand where much of his aggression might come from and why he'd want to prevent long-term damage to the kernel, but I think it has created a justification for interpersonal hostility in a field of work that is already both boring and hard. There's enough screaming-opinions-without-actually-solving-anything from our political system, and obviously any step closer to our current political system is a painful step in the wrong direction.

I mean, I left tiktok years ago for my own reasons, but I spent enough time there to know that many of the platform's users have serious hive mentality. They will find either a workaround, or someone to harass/attack until they get what they want. (Not that the latter of the two is always a good thing)

I have narrow ear canals, and I've used isopropyl alcohol to fix this in the past. I'd literally just pour it in my ear, lay down for three to five minutes, then turn over with paper towels under my ear with my ear facing the ground to let it drain out. repeat with other ear if needed. It can make your ears kinda sore, especially if you do it for too long or too many times at once, but it is super cheap and does a fantastic job of dissolving ear wax.

It's official: FA is no longer a part of my life. It makes me kinda sad, but FA has chronic issues. Even if the mods back off, I can't see it as a good platform anymore. This is far from the first time something like this has happened, and many people actually rely financially on FA in order to put food on the table, and the mods swaying between allowing you to use their platform and persecuting you for your existence is a much bigger deal in this case. They should all work on any wayland system that lets you reassign/shortcut keys. the only one that's specific is pactl vs wpctl, pactl is for pulseaudio (still works for pipewire with pipewire-pulse) and wpctl is for pipewire through wireplumber. Yeah, I think Wayland development has progressed to an area where both X11 and Wayland are a little broken because Wayland isn't 100% mature yet, but it's matured enough to have driven an increasing number of devs away from X11. With xwayland installed, I think the only time something ever outright broke on wayland was with VNC and screenshare though. I hope all goes well!

for that matter, it's a bad idea to have just one copy of important data anywhere. I've found that keeping 3 complete backups on 3 different storage devices is the way to go. Tedious, yes, but I've never regretted it once I was in a situation where I could have lost data oerwise.

I've got an old 2017 Samsung J3 I'm trying to create lineage os 15.1 (maybe 16 if I'm up for a challenge) for, and I don't suffer if it gets bricked because Android 6 is ancient as far as the android community is concerned and basically useless in most cases. Android 9 isn't exactly modern either, but it technically works with most apps still and the phone has a headphone jack, expandable storage, a removeable sim and a removeable battery!
