Imagine a system where contributing to the common good is our yardstick for success, not personal enrichment by any means possible.

Such a system would not extract a “cost of living.” A dignified life with access to modern housing, healthcare, etc., would be considered a human right. And everyone would have a basic income they can use however they wish. Imagine what progress we would make as a species if more of us could contribute to science, to art, to all aspects of the human knowledge and the human experience because they were no longer wasting their entire time on Earth just trying to make ends meet.

This is not some pipe dream. For the first time in history we have the technological means to implement such a system.

The issue is it’s almost impossible to get folks to add the link correctly to their accounts manually. So I built a system there they can sign in with their Mastodon account and it adds the link to their account automatically. And it’s important to be able to differentiate people who are signed up to be verified vs those who are not.

We do not have a list of scam accounts.

(And I’m building/maintaining the site by myself in addition to trying to get the Small Web launched this year. So I’m going the best I can with zero resources.)

It is the only country in the world to have used nuclear weapons against civilian population. Regarding the issue with telling Palestinians how they should post (beyond warning them away from practices that would get their accounts banned), I see that paternalistic.

Our friends from Gaza are not children who need to be told what they can post and what they can’t. They have been living under the total surveillance as an occupied people for decades. (e.g., see https://www.nytimes.com/2024/03/27/technology/israel-facial-recognition-gaza.html)

There is a real risk here that such policies will lead to further erasure of Palestinian faces and voices and impair their ability to make connections here.

I am happy to add a note to the guide warning of the possible dangers but we have to be careful not to create two sets of rules here – one for Palestinians and one for everyone else – or impose our will on our Palestinian friends who are adults and who can make these decisions for themselves.

This is why I haven’t been quick to rush into anything. Especially before talking it through with the Palestinian members of our team and getting their input and advice.

We’re sadly aware and we have been trying our best to tell everyone that this is harmful for everyone involved but there are a few accounts we can’t seem to get through to.

We get the absolutely horrendous circumstances but it doesn’t help when the repercussions are lost trust for everyone and suspended accounts.

Needlessly to say, mass tagging and direct message tagging of people you don’t know are against our rules at Gaza Verified and we will not be challenging suspensions that arise because of this. We have in the past and we’ve had accounts repeating the same thing over and over again even after we advocated for them multiple times. You agree to these rules before you sign up for a verification call and they’re there to keep you from getting limited and suspended.

We will continue to try and explain best we can why Mastodon and the fediverse is different to mass mainstream platforms.

The best thing you can do here is to forge real connections and friendships. The more people follow and interact with you, the more they will share your posts and the more support you will see. You might be able to reach a few thousand people with a mass message but it is meaningless if your account is then muted/blocked/suspended. And it greatly harms the other people from Gaza who are not doing this and what we’ve been trying to so (and succeeding in doing) here: countering mainstream propaganda, building trust, and fostering a community that is welcoming to our friends and families in Palestine.

To our Gaza Verified family, if you’re reading this: please also watch out for this behaviour between yourselves and talk to each other about it also. Joy, Aseel, Aya, Fabio and myself are volunteers with limited time. We cannot (and will not) police close to 150 people/families. We shouldn’t have to. So guess who wrote a convoluted date comparison conditional instead of using `Temporal.ZonedDateTime.compare()` like an intelligent human being and ended up hitting an edge case where future scheduled calls started getting cleaned off the database instead of past ones?

I’ll give you a hint: has two thumbs and his name is Aral 🤦‍♂️

Anyway, just restored things from yesterday’s backup and sent a direct message to everyone scheduled for a Gaza Verified video verification call apologising for the confusion and explaining what happened.

Moral of the story: stick to the Temporal API and use its methods if you’re implementing anything even remotely non-trivial involving dates, especially if there are timezones involved. (You can use a Temporal API polyfill in Node.js – I’ve been using temporal-polyfill.)

Now I’m going to expire for the evening.

So I just wasted a morning trying to debug why the Highlight.js syntax highlighting in Kitten suddenly began to fail only to realise that 1Password (npub1ak3…t4td) is stripping the hljs- prefixes from the class names.

You can see this for yourself if you have the 1password extension installed at:

Load that page with 1password enabled in your browser and you will see that the syntax highlighting doesn’t work and the hljs- prefixes have been stripped.

Disable the 1password extension and load the page again and you will see syntax highlighting working properly.

So the other day my Onewheel started pushing back at relatively low speeds. My first thought was, “must be tire pressure.” Pumped up the tire, went out again, same thing. Hmm… could I have inadvertently changed the shaping?

So I fire up the app to find the setting for the shaping and I’m stumped. There’s nothing about it on the main nav at the bottom. So I look under the hamburger menu and I find a Settings section and go there. Nope, nothing.

Wtf?

Literally after staring at the app for ten minutes I accidentally trigger the photo carousel and *bam!* get notified that the shaping has changed.

Which, clearly, is how I’d fumbled into onto the beginner setting when I ride Pacific.

The shaping, by the way, is what determines the character of your board and ride. It’s a major thing. It impacts safety. And in this app, it’s set by swiping on a control that looks like a photo gallery of OneWheel photos.

🤦‍♂️

Moral of the story for designers: make everyday actions simple to perform, yes, but, equally, make actions that are infrequently performed and/or could have potentially catastrophic consequences hard to perform. Also, make your controls look like controls and label them.
