I wanna say "told you so" to those who told me a few months ago "it won't happen".

In the last few months I've been thinking about computers and such, and I thought that maybe I want my computers and software to be pre-slop, and I'll just keep them offline. I probably will keep a modern device or two, however slopified it will be, to keep the access to the bank apps and government portals, in case these will be locked down to modern Chromium versions, but that might be about it.

And yes, probably OpenBSD or NetBSD as a networked computer (unless these slopify as well).

I started with a machine translation of the song, but it wasn't just imprecise, it was completely wrong in many places. People saying that modern machine translation is the equivalent of the Babel Fish are so freaking (and dangerously) wrong.

After two years of hiatus, my food garden is back. This year, as an experiment in a new location, I have a 2x2m planter with salad, onions, carrots, peas and cucumbers, 6 bags with potato plants and 5 bags with tomatoes.

I've been chomping on the salad leaves and pruning occasional onion and carrot (in the salad it goes!), but I wouldn't call it a crop. So, today marks the first proper crop of the year: a big handful of peas. I have only two pea plants, but they're gigantic. I planned the planter poorly, so they're overtowering the cucumber plant. But it's still flowering well, and half a dozen cucumbers are about to form.

Potato plants actually look like they might be ready for the first harvest, too: there are not just fruits but plants on them (also: did you know that potato fruits look almost exactly lm the same as green tomatoes?).

Tomatoes were really struggling under the heatwave, but it seems like I managed to protect them from drying out completely. No fruits yet, only flowers.

I disagree with this take. Using or not using software with AI involvement is still a choice. Much more difficult one than before, but it can be done. For now it means something like "NetBSD and freezing versions of some dependencies", in the near future it might become something like "weird BSD fork compiled with a fork of ack and busybox", and it might even become "it's historic software or hand-written systems". But it still is a choice. To draw a weird parallel: if being vegan would suddenly require not only cooking 100% of your meals but also growing food, some people would still do it, and maybe hope that people around them would start, little by little, making more ethical decisions.

I like the series of illustrations of anime girls doing electronics with components bigger than the girls. Today I discovered that my favourite electronics textbook had a series of similar illustrations made by artists Nikolai Frolov and Zoya Florinskaya. The illustrations were originally created for a 1979 edition, but the publisher didn't allow them to go to print. The first edition that got the illustrations was one from 2000, and it had a bunch of new illustrations including Human Scale Microelectronics.

Fruity Loops, a legendary DAW for electronic music, blew my mind when I launched it on this Pentium II. Late 90s versions look, feel and sound like a cross-over between a modern DAW and an old-school tracker/sequencer. Multiple channels, multiple pipelines for effects. Each channel can be a sample or a synth.

I had to take a photo of the splash screen because pressing Prt Scr cannot capture it due to high CPU load.

I have both FL2 and FL5 on this machine. FL2 comes with a DrumSynth and TS404, and FL5 also comes with Sytrus. There are demo tracks made by deadmaus. These tracks use too many effects in Sytrus, so I can't play them live on this computer, but I can play them part-by-part or "export".

My plan for the day was to simulate a four-track on my Pentium II laptop to record a couple of tracks from my guitars on it, accompanied with synthesised drums and maybe some light post-processing. Spoiler alert: it was a triumph.

But at first, I needed to make sure I can record my guitar. As you can hear, I can. It doesn't sound quite as good as when I record it over USB capture card connected to a modern Logic Pro, with all sorts of noise gate filters enabled, but it sounds on par with lame punk demos from 30 years ago, which is exactly what I'm aiming for today.

Side note: many people swear that the tool for this back in the days was Pro Tools. I tried; it was so sluggish I couldn't use it even to record a single track. I'll stick to tools that worked for me this time.

The laptop comes with a Sound Blaster-compatible ESS, capable of 16-bit stereo recording in 44100 Hz. This is not super awesome, but probably is fine for making music demos.

There are many programs that could handle digital audio on this generation of computers, including Win16-compatible GoldWave and more familiar to everyone today Audacity.

By default, the sound card tries to record everything but the linear input, so I had to thrash around the settings until I found the right set of knobs in the system that would allow me to record my guitar.

It becomes quite obvious that GoldWave is not very ergonomic, so I'm going to use Audacity for my demo today.

MIDI/FM music-making on this computer is a no-brainer. There are many options for MIDI orchestration, including new and user-friendly Guitar Pro and old and tried Logic. Anyone who has tried modern Logic would see how close modern versions are to the multi-modal-window Logic 2 (and Logic 3).

Logic 2 should work on Windows 3.1, and it can play an audio track timed to MIDI - but, as with Cakewalk from the previous thread, it cannot do anything fun with it, so it is mostly a MIDI sequencer, not a DAW.

The quality of your sound will depend on your MIDI setup. The laptop has FM out of the box, and it sounds pretty bad.

So, I got myself a lovely second-hand x86-64 laptop for a fraction of a MacBook cost. It seems OpenBSD supports all of its hardware, including WiFi. NetBSD boots well, but the video mode is very wrong, and the network support isn't quite there. I'm not sure if I'll be able to find a built-in WiFi card that would work with it, but a USB dongle should work. I guess I will partition the disk so I could multi-boot. I want to have space there to have fun with small OSes on real hardware, after all.

FiwixOS comes with quite a few ports, and will require close to 1GB on a disk. I suppose this is because the packages are not particularly optimised in size. The biggest packages beyond the base and GCC are Python3, Perl, ZX Spectrum emulator and Doom/Heretic.

The system is small, but functional. At the same time, there are quite a few sharp corners, unfinished and untested things.

So, this weekend I'm playing with Fiwix. Fiwix (https://fiwix.org/) is a small hobbyist operating system for i386 that aims to be Linux 2.0 compatible while being small enough that a single human could understand it as a whole (it's ~30k SLOC, self-hosted, and can be built with tcc).

A couple of years ago Fiwix was used in a fun project of "let's bootstrap a Linux system with only tiny tools that can be understood by a single person": https://github.com/fosslinux/live-bootstrap/blob/master/parts.rst

My refreshed interest in it comes from multiple sources: first, there is now a TCP/IP stack (still WIP). Second, GNU/Linux is *gestures ambiguously* in a strange state, so it is interesting to see how far one could get with a completely non-BSD non-standard tiny, toy-like operating system.

The installation is quite straightforward. "Please keep in mind this kernel is not yet suited for production. Use at your own risk!" is, in itself, a proof of reliability.

A single PR "co-authored by Claude" has slipped through. The code was written by a human (according to the commit), then properly reviewed and eventually merged by a maintainer. The Claude contribution is attributed solely to the code comments added through a mid-PR-flow commit update.

And now the commit history will show Claude as a contributor. It might be impossible to rewrite it. Rewriting kind of goes against the idea of having the git history, too. Even if that was possible, it's an extra effort which not all maintainers can prioritise.

So: seeing "Claude was here" in a GitHub repo is a "red flag", but it shouldn't be "therefore guilty of slop and LLM proliferation by default"; please use your head/best judgement.

I guess it is a cautionary tale for the maintainers, too :tiredcat:

OpenBSD adventures, day two. My MacBook with arm64 is running fine under OpenBSD, but there is no video acceleration, so it can't play full-screen videos.

I started to think what I can do about it, and I realised that we had a few e-waste Chromebooks bought for $20 apiece. It's 1.5GHz Celeron, and it is as dodgy as laptops get: it is spray-painted, it is made of cheap plastic, and the keyboard and the touchpad are both kind of only look like real ThinkPad but there were so many corners cut making it that I can't type "root" without it missing a letter or two every other time. This is what kids apparently were using in schools ten years ago or so?

Some things are glacially slow, but Xfce4 is quite usable, and it can play YouTube in 720p. Everything the laptop has to offer seems to be working (even webcam).

It works incredible for an ultra-low-end device from 2013.

I'm tooting this from OpenBSD running XFCE on Apple Silicon. It was a bit of a learning curve, but it works better than my first Linux did. Display, keyboard, touchpad, Wi-Fi, even sound - they all work. Firefox is quite usable even without the video acceleration, but I'm not sure if I can daily-drive it if I'm not able to play videos on this machine.

The Workbench magazine features a DIY ukulele on the cover, that sounds... incredible? I wonder if the instrument itself sounded good. We'll find out, I guess?

It's a sad situation to be in, because W3C is largely controlled by big tech who push for features that will make them richer; whether it makes developers and users happier is not as important it seems :(

I think it would be nice to have a way to filter out packages available for installation on my OS by their use of generative AI.

E.g. I probably don't want a package if there are commits by copilot/claude/codex, or there's skills.md, or there's AGENTS.md/CLAUDE.md in the source (though some of it could be "dear bot, please go away", so idk about this one).

Obviously not a guarantee, but a signal of sorts. :tiredcat:
