Friday afternoon reminder to not empty your inbox at the expense of someone else. I carpooled with someone who had a cough (unbeknownst to me until later) and now I have the sneezes. I'm one of the people who went there but isn't ready (may never be ready) to talk about it. Hampshire was formative for me in so many ways. I'm sorry other people won't be able to have that. I moved to Seattle then VT because of Hampshire, became a librarian because of Hampshire, met many friends I still have. But also my post-graduation experience was less great (non-stop aggressive appeals for money & little else) and I feel okay letting Hampshire rest. I am sorry for everyone's loss.

Wow, yeah I also work in a library helping older adults with technology and I very much see a lot of the behavior your student describes. People who have a hard time with password managers, people who have a hard time with pen/paper password managers, people who don't totally understand how 2FA will work if they're not specifically around. These are good suggestions at the end and some of them just need to get the eye of people who can make decisions. Thanks for sharing it.

I work for the Flickr Foundation which built a funny little tool for downloading one's own Flickr archives (or one for which you have permission) along with social context (comments faves, whatever). Our researcher wrote a report on The State of Social Media Archiving Tools and... surprisingly, it's something which is hard to do.

Book 32: This Book Made Me Think Of You. A woman's young husband dies and he leaves her a gift of one hand-picked book per month from the local independent bookstore. This is an engaging and basic romance novel which has at its core the idea that books can change lives. It goes pretty much exactly where you think it's going to go. Stacey Kabat co-produced the Oscar-winning film about the Framingham Eight. She was a really active and influential person in Massachusetts politics getting the word out about domestic violence, primarily about protecting the largely-female victims, but also trying to get real rehabilitative outcomes for abusers. She did this work for about 20 years, got burned out, and is now a nurse.

As a woman on the internet, I block often and usually only mute when someone is temporarily making a lot of noise about a thing they are enthusiastic about (which I can't keyword filter). I mostly block because I feel someone's either being creepy to me or being creepy to someone else and I never want to have a conversation about it b/c creepiness. People have told me they're going to block me on occasion and while I'm fine with that I'm also a little confused why they told me.

Yeah when I was a kid (in Boxboro), we had a local paper and it was always a Big Deal if you got your name in it for sports or school stuff (less so for the crime report) and now that town no longer has a print paper, but I moved north and we have a regional paper that's HQed in my town and covers ten towns and you can be sure all those kids think it's a Big Deal if they get their name in the paper for sports or school or all the other civic stuff they report. I love it.

Book 31: The Bear at the Bird Feeder. As someone who has had a bear at her bird feeder, I read this book with interest. The author is an outdoorsy type who talks about the various kinds of animals you might see if you live near their habitats and what, if anything, you can and should do about them. The animals she discusses range from bears to alligators to foxes to skunks to wild turkeys. It's sensible advice which acknowledges the complexity of these situations.

Yeah I had the same reaction to that boss! There are definitely a few casual throwaway negative portrayals of different folks which are a problem. To me it didn't rise to the level of not wanting to finish the book but a few times I was like "Geez man, get a sensitivity reader" about some characters.

Book 30: Dungeon Crawler Carl. I put off reading this because the cover is so dumb. I'm glad I persevered. It's a "What if an RPG was in novel form and was funny?" book with Carl who survives a weird apocalypse only to wind up in a dungeon RPG along with his ex-girlfriend's cat who gets some buffs so that she can talk. There's a complex ruleset and a lot of funny bits while there's also a lot of boss battles complete with weird monsters and a lot of gore. Part of a longer series, will read more.

I answered "No, but..." and I understand why people like them and I'm sure people answering yes have different goals from me. I'm a sophisticated end user not a coder. When I hit a wall with the Wordpress GUI, the support team often tries to get me to use the CLI to resolve it, but they also want me to sort of *learn the CLI* first. I want to solve my Wordpress problem so I can do my task, not learn a new thing in an environment that I am almost never in unless it's the only option.

The Framingham Eight were women serving time for killing their abusive spouses/partners in Massachusetts. They sought commutation of their sentences in the 1990s saying they were acting in self defense because of battered person syndrome. Seven of the eight received commuted sentences; many had difficult lives afterwards either in or out of the spotlight. A short documentary about them won an Oscar. They had no Wikipedia page. Most news articles about them are by women.

Emily Sweeney does news clips on Insta for The Boston Globe where she's been a staff writer since 2003. She's from Dorchester, has a thick Boston accent. I found that she also writes a lot about Massachusetts crime and authored a book about John "Dropkick" Murphy, an amateur wrestler turned rehab host (yes, where the band got their name). Friday afternoon reminder to not empty your inbox at the expense of someone else's. Big holiday weekend around here and I just got my laundry machines installed. I'm not sure doing laundry in my grubby basement is an improvement over doing it at the clean laundromat, but we can all learn new things, like how to not send last minute email to people just trying to get to their weekend.

Book 29: The Body, a Guide for Occupants. A fun book about what we know about the human body based on science. It talks about the body section by section. The book is filled with trivia including a lot of mentions of people who are not well-known by folks (including some scientists whose research was co-opted by others who took all the glory). I knew some things, I learned some things, and I thought "Oh I think that's changed" about a few things (book is from 2017). Readable and fun.

Book 28: Seascraper. A very moody seaside novella about a young man making his living in the hardscrabble world of shanking, scraping shrimp from the low waters with his horse and cart, coming home to where he lives with his mom, getting up and doing it all over again. I helped an 80+ year old woman install a wireless printer today and the step I *thought* we were going to get hung up on was her having her apple ID password to at least pretend to install software (fuck you HP) but she whipped the little piece of paper it was on out from under her desk blotter SO quickly.

In my world it's Mastodon for nerds and geeky things and old web folks, Bluesky for bigger reach, librarian stuff and more shitposting type of jokes. Mastodon is more people I know in person (though not all, certainly) and Bluesky is more "people from the internet"

She's really cool. Her dad runs my town's water system and they work on her cars together and it's just great to see it. I buy space on her car every year and they always come by, to my house, in person, to say thank you and give me a little set of photos of the car in action. It's really so so nice. I feel a little bad for his family that the clout-chasers at the NYT decided that his Pulitzer-winning book was the one they should mention in the headline. He did so much with his writing career.
