It reminded me that the 70’s and 80’s are a treasure trove of tv movie fare that most people have never seen. They’re typically low budget and designed to kickstart, extend or fill an actor’s career. These were basically the filler between the shows people really cared about. <br/><br/>This one is schlocky, corny full of horror tropes etc but it hit a nerve with me. Plus it has the weirdly wonderful Ruth Gordon and the ever complainy voiced Dennis Weaver who are both fun to watch. In a nutshell it’s either a ghost story with some dark underpinnings, a depiction of some truly menacing psychopathy or some of both. It’s ambiguous and takes a while to reveal what’s happening but it sits in a spot I seem to be fascinated by.. where exactly is the line between objectivity and subjectivity and what truly guides thought and motion? <br/><br/>It’s on youtube, probably in the public domain by now. It would follow then that those who can alleviate their own suffering by passing it to others should become weaker for it. Those with power and position and seemingly the least to suffer though are usually those who can and do cause the most suffering for the majority. <br/><br/>Since the larger balance of humans are sufferers, then the majority body of the world should also be the strongest as they’ve grown deep roots and thick branches to weather storms. So why are the minority powerful elite (who should be weak - and are often proven to be so) allowed to reign over the masses of those who have learned to thrive in adversity? <br/><br/>The only thing I can think of is that those who suffer are tribal and segregated and see other, closer to home, tribes as the threat. That otherization seems to cause people to overlook the suffering of other “tribes” and in many cases welcome it because of the constant streams of propaganda and misinformation created by those in power. <br/><br/>If people who wanted to buy a diamond ring, for example, knew that some kid or other unfortunate soul on the other side of the world had to risk his life to crawl down into the bowels of the earth to get it maybe it would sour the inclination to purchase it? <br/><br/>Then we have to talk about empathy and lack thereof which is the real root of the problem but I’ve already gassed on about it too long.
