Self-custody vs BTC or crypto platforms: which one is right for your SMSF?

There are different ways to hold Bitcoin in your SMSF. Each approach has trade-offs worth understanding.

Self-custody (hardware wallet or your own setup)
You hold the private keys yourself. Nobody else has access. Complete control and independence.

The upside is security and autonomy. If you know what you're doing, self-custody works well.

The downside is you're responsible for everything. Lose your password and your BTC is gone. No customer support. You handle backups. You manage compliance records. You deal with the technical side.

Multi-signature (multi-sig) custody
This is the middle ground. You use a wallet that requires multiple approvals to move crypto. For example, you might need three signatures to authorise any transaction. You hold one key, your accountant holds another, and a trusted third party holds the third.

The upside is security with backup. If you lose your key, the BTC isn't gone because the other key holders can help. It's harder to hack because you need multiple approvals. It's still your BTC.

The downside is complexity. You need to coordinate with other key holders to move money. It takes longer than a single signature. You need to trust your co-signers. Setting it up initially takes more work.

Using a specialised SMSF BTC (an many other crypto) platform
Platforms like Coinbase Australia, Coinstash, or CoinSpot offer SMSF accounts. They hold your crypto and manage custody for you.

The upside is simplicity. They handle security. They provide tax reports. Audit trails are automatic. Customer support exists. Built for SMSF compliance.

The downside is trust. You're relying on a third party. Platform risk exists. You pay fees. You don't control the keys.

What actually matters for your SMSF
Self-custody requires discipline with backups and records. Multi-sig gives you security without full responsibility. Platforms give you compliance and simplicity.

Most trustees find platforms the easiest. Some prefer multi-sig for the balance of control and safety. A few want full self-custody control.

The compliance angle
Any approach works as long as you can prove your SMSF owns the crypto. Platforms provide statements. Multi-sig requires wallet verification. Self-custody needs exchange receipts or wallet proof. Your auditor just needs evidence.

The tax & audit side
Platforms can provide streamlined transaction reporting and statements, which makes life easier if all your SMSF's BTC activity happens on that one platform. But most trustees end up with holdings across multiple exchanges, wallets, or DeFi activity over time, and no single platform sees the full picture. Multi-sig and self-custody are the same story, just without the streamlined reporting to start with.

Either way, your accountant still needs to pull together the complete transaction history to calculate gains and prepare audit evidence. The platform statement is a helpful input, not a finished product.

The bottom line
It's not about which is best. It's about which fits your comfort level, your time commitment, and your security needs. Most trustees start with platforms. Some move to multi-sig once they understand BTC better. A few graduate to self-custody.

Not sure what the tax and compliance side looks like for each custody option? We're happy to talk it through.

#BitcoinSMSF #SMSF #CryptoSMSF #Custody #SMSFCompliance

Five questions to ask yourself before buying Bitcoin in your SMSF

Before you move money into Bitcoin (or any other crypto), ask yourself these five questions. If you can't answer them clearly, you're not ready yet.

1. Does my trust deed allow it?
Check your SMSF's trust deed. Does it permit digital assets or investments outside traditional classes? If it doesn't explicitly allow crypto, you need to amend it first. That takes time and costs money. Do it before you buy anything.

2. Can I afford the costs?
Running an SMSF has fees. Audit fees, accounting fees, platform fees, compliance costs. If your SMSF balance is small, these costs might outweigh the benefit of holding BTC. Do the maths. Make sure it makes financial sense.

3. What's my actual investment strategy?
Don't buy Bitcoin because it's trendy. Have a reason. Is it for diversification? Long term growth? What percentage of your fund should it be? Write it down. If you can't articulate why you're buying it, you probably shouldn't.

4. Can I handle the volatility?
BTC and many cryptos swing 20 to 40 per cent in a month. Sometimes more. Can you see your holdings drop that much without panicking and selling? If not, cryptocurrency isn't right for you. Be honest with yourself here.

5. Where will I actually hold it?
Do you use a regulated Australian exchange? A custodian? Self custody? Know exactly where your crypto will be stored and how you'll access it. Don't just send money somewhere and hope for the best.

The point
These questions aren't meant to scare you off. They're meant to make sure you've actually thought it through. If you can answer all five clearly, you're ready to proceed. If you can't, sort those things out first.

Need help thinking through whether Bitcoin fits your SMSF? We help you work through these decisions properly.

#CryptoTax #BitcoinSMSF #CryptoSMSF #SMSFPlanning #InvestmentStrategy

Why some SMSF trustees avoid Bitcoin (and what that costs them)

Plenty of SMSF trustees won't touch cryptocurrency (even BTC). They think it's too technical, too risky, or purely speculative. Sometimes that's the right call. Sometimes it's not.

Why trustees avoid it
Most don't understand it. Bitcoin (and crypto in general) sounds complicated and unfamiliar. Others remember the scandals and assume all crypto is dangerous. Some see it as pure gambling with no place in retirement savings.

These concerns aren't completely wrong. But they're often based on outdated information. Regulated Australian platforms have safeguards. Licensed exchanges have proper oversight. The infrastructure has matured.

What they're missing
Trustees who avoid BTC and crypto entirely end up with portfolios that move together. Shares, bonds, property, cash. When one struggles, they often all struggle. Crypto doesn't move the same way as traditional assets. Sometimes it performs when shares fall. That diversification matters over decades.

The numbers
Over the past ten years, Bitcoin and Ethereum have massively outperformed traditional investments. Yes, they've had big drawdowns. But the long term returns have been extraordinary.

Trustees who avoided Bitcoin completely missed that opportunity.
It's not all or nothing

You don't need to bet your retirement on BTC. A 5 per cent allocation to crypto and 95 per cent traditional assets gives you exposure without threatening your retirement.

The real cost
You might have plenty for retirement without BTC. But if you're avoiding it based on fear or misunderstanding rather than actual analysis, you're removing a tool that could help.

Ready to look at crypto without the hype? Give us a call to see what you can do with crypto inside an SMSF.

#CryptoTax #CryptoAccountant #BitcoinSMSF #CryptoSMSF #DiversifiedPortfolio #RetirementPlanning

Ever wondered what happens to your Bitcoin SMSF when you pass away?

If you're holding BTC (or any crypto) in your SMSF, there's something important you probably haven't thought about. What happens to it when you pass away? It's not a comfortable topic, but it matters. A lot.

The basic problem
If nobody knows where your crypto is stored or how to access it, your family might not be able to get to it. Your holdings could sit frozen on an exchange or in a hardware wallet that nobody has the password to. That's a worst case scenario, but it happens.

Your Will doesn't cover your SMSF directly
Your regular Will handles your personal assets. It doesn't automatically pass control of your SMSF to your beneficiaries. Your SMSF has its own rules about who can take over as trustee and what happens to the assets.
That's why the trust deed of your SMSF matters. It spells out what happens to the fund and its assets when a trustee dies.

Your beneficiaries need to know where things are
Successful estate planning starts with documentation. Write down which exchange your crypto is on. Document the account details. If you use hardware wallets, store that information somewhere secure that someone you trust can access.
If your crypto is in self custody, your beneficiaries need to know how to access it. That means keeping a record of passwords or seed phrases in a secure place, like a safe deposit box or with a solicitor.

Communicate with your family
Your beneficiaries don't need to know your passwords. But they do need to know that you hold BTC or crypto, roughly how much it's worth, and where to find the documentation about it. A simple letter kept with your will goes a long way. It doesn't need to be complicated. Just clear directions.

Tax planning doesn't stop at the grave
While you're thinking about your SMSF structure, it's worth having a conversation about tax efficiency during your lifetime too.

Two strategies that come up a lot for BTC SMSF members are the withdraw and recontribute strategy and tax parcel selection.

If you're over preservation age and still working, withdrawing funds tax free from super and recontributing them as non-concessional contributions can reduce or eliminate the taxable component of your balance. That matters a lot at death. Taxable components passed to non-dependants (like adult children) attract a 15% tax plus Medicare levy on the taxed element. Reducing that component now can save your beneficiaries a meaningful amount.

Tax parcel selection is simpler but equally powerful. When your SMSF sells crypto, you're not stuck using the first-in-first-out method. Selecting which parcels to dispose of first, whether that's the ones with the highest cost base, the ones you've held longest, or the ones sitting at a loss, can significantly reduce the capital gain in any given year. In accumulation phase that's taxed at 15% (or 10% with the CGT discount for assets held over 12 months). The difference between smart parcel selection and default treatment adds up quickly when you're dealing with assets that have appreciated substantially.

A quick note on scope: what we do sits strictly in the tax minimisation space. We're not financial advisers and we don't tell you what to buy, sell, or hold. Whether these strategies are right for your situation is a conversation to have with your licensed financial adviser. We focus on ensuring that, once the decision is made, the tax outcome is as efficient as possible.

We help clients with both of these as part of our annual SMSF work. They're not set and forget. They require active decisions each year

Planning ahead for your SMSF's future? We help you with SMSF compliance, proactive strategies, and setting up structures that work when it matters most.

#SMSF #BitcoinSMSF #CryptoSMSF #EstatePlanning #FinancialPlanning

📈 Should your SMSF hold Bitcoin? It depends on your tolerance for volatility

Volatility is the word that comes up most when people talk about BTC and any other crypto.

Bitcoin can swing 20% in a week. Ethereum can do the same. That scares a lot of people, especially when it comes to their retirement savings.

But volatility itself isn't good or bad. It's just a characteristic of the asset. The real question is whether it fits your situation.

What volatility actually means
Your BTC holdings might be worth more tomorrow or less. They could swing up 30% and then down 40% within a month. That's just how Bitcoin and crypto behave in general. It's more volatile than shares, bonds, or property. That's a fact.

This is fine if you're not looking at it every day
Super is a long term game. If you buy Bitcoin today and forget about it for five years, a 30% drop next month doesn't matter much. You're buying and holding for retirement, not trading next week.

This becomes a problem if you panic sell
Where volatility hurts is when people see a big drop and sell everything to stop the bleeding. That locks in the loss. If you can't handle seeing your BTC balance down 50% without panicking, then BTC probably isn't right for your SMSF.

The size of your holding matters
If Bitcoin is 2% of your SMSF, volatility is just noise. You barely notice it. If Bitcoin is 50% of your fund, a 40% drop wipes out a significant chunk of your balance. That's harder to stomach.

Your age and timeline matter too
If you're retiring in two years, holding volatile crypto might mean selling during a downturn to access your money. That's risky. If you're retiring in fifteen years, you have time to wait out the volatility and benefit from the recovery.

The honest answer
BTC belongs in an SMSF if you understand volatility, can afford to ignore short term price swings, and have sized your holding appropriately. It doesn't belong if you'll panic sell when the price drops or if losing that money would hurt your retirement plans.

Trying to figure out if Bitcoin fits your SMSF? We help you assess your risk tolerance and build a strategy that works for your situation.

#SMSF #BitcoinSMSF #RiskManagement #InvestmentStrategy

💳 Australian businesses are quietly starting to accept Botcoin

If you've been wondering whether BTC is actually being used for anything in Australia, the answer is yes. More cafes, restaurants, utility companies, and retailers are accepting digital payments.

It's not just experiments anymore
According to Treasury figures, over 1.2 million Australians use BTC (and other crypto) for at least one retail purchase each month. That's real usage. These aren't people speculating. They're buying coffee, paying rent, and settling utility bills with digital assets.

How it actually works
In 2026, the most practical way to pay with BTC is through regulated exchanges that offer payment features. Scan a QR code at a café in Melbourne, approve with Face ID, and the exchange handles the conversion to AUD instantly. No card needed. Just your phone.
PayID now supports crypto addresses, which means you can pay someone the same way you'd send them money through a bank transfer. Except it's crypto. The merchant gets paid in minutes instead of business days.

Which businesses are doing this
Cafes across the major cities now accept BTC payments. Some smaller retailers have added QR code payment systems. Utility companies are integrating BTC payments for bills. Even Woolworths is becoming easier to pay with digital assets through approved payment channels.

The key is that these aren't futuristic experiments. They're happening now and they're working.

Why this matters for SMSFs
When businesses start accepting BTC for payments, it signals that the asset class is moving beyond speculation into practical use. Crypto becomes infrastructure rather than just an investment. That's when institutions and funds take it more seriously.

Thinking about holding Bitcoin in your SMSF as part of a diversified strategy? When payment adoption grows, it often signals the next phase of institutional acceptance.

#SMSF #BitcoinSMSF #BitcoinPayments #AustralianBTC

Myth vs reality: what's actually true about Bitcoin and crypto in your SMSF

There's a lot of noise around BTC in SMSFs. Some people think it's the path to instant wealth. Others think it's pure speculation that will tank your retirement. The truth is somewhere in the middle.

Myth: You need massive amounts of money to make Bitcoin worthwhile in your SMSF

Reality: There's no minimum amount required. What matters is whether the costs justify the benefit for your situation. If your SMSF is small, the annual audit and compliance costs might outweigh the gains. That's just practical thinking, not a reason to avoid BTC or any crypto entirely.

Myth: Bitcoin (and any crypto) in an SMSF is risky and the ATO will come after you

Reality: Crypto itself is volatile, but holding it in your SMSF isn't risky from a compliance perspective if you do it properly. Keep good records, separate your holdings from personal crypto, and maintain an audit trail. The ATO isn't targeting compliant SMSFs. They're targeting people who ignore the rules.

Myth: You need to be a Bitcoin expert to hold it in your SMSF

Reality: You don't need to understand blockchain technology. You need to understand your investment strategy and whether BTC fits into it. That's true for any asset. You don't need to be an expert in mining to hold shares in a mining company.

Myth: All crypto is the same and equally risky

Reality: Bitcoin and Ethereum behave differently from newer altcoins. Some cryptocurrencies are more established and less volatile than others. Just like with shares, some options are more suitable for a retirement fund than others. Your choice matters.

Myth: The ATO will reject your audit if you hold BTC or any crypto

Reality: The ATO is fine with BTC and crypto holdings as long as your records are complete and your valuations are defensible. Use a reputable exchange to get your 30 June closing price. Keep transaction records. Hopefully your SMSF auditor has seen plenty of Bitcoin SMSFs by now. If not, speak to us about our crypto-savvy auditor.

Myth: BTC will make you rich quickly through your SMSF

Reality: Bitcoin is volatile. You might gain 50% one year and lose 30% the next. Your SMSF is supposed to be for long term retirement savings, not speculation. If you're treating it like a trading account, you're missing the point.

What actually matters:

Your trust deed allows it. Your records are clean. Your investment strategy includes it. Your holdings are in the SMSF's name. You value them properly at reporting date. That's the reality. More options now available for crypto custody in your SMSF
If you've been hesitant about holding crypto in your SMSF because of custody concerns, the landscape just shifted. Australian crypto platforms are now offering dedicated solutions built specifically for super funds.

Coinbase enters the Australian SMSF market
Just this month, Coinbase Australia launched specialised support for SMSFs. They're offering institutional grade custody and audit ready reports. The fact that a major global player is now focusing on Australian SMSFs signals where the market is heading.

Dedicated SMSF platforms expanding
Coinstash now has a dedicated in-house SMSF support team. They handle same day onboarding and produce EOFY reports that auditors actually like working with. There's also accountant access and portfolio tracking APIs to streamline compliance.

CoinSpot has long had SMSF support but they've expanded it significantly. They offer EOFY reporting tools, and a read-only API for accountants to monitor holdings without touching the fund.

What makes these solutions different
These aren't just regular crypto exchange accounts renamed for SMSFs. They're built around how super funds need to operate. That means reports showing the full SMSF name, clear audit trails, ATO compliant documentation, and reporting tools that speak the language of accountants and auditors.

Self custody still an option
If you prefer hardware wallets or self custody, that's still available. But the difference now is you have platforms that understand the compliance side of things and can help you maintain proper records and separation from personal holdings.

The bigger picture
Australian SMSFs held around 3 billion dollars in digital assets in mid 2025, up from 119 million in 2019. That growth is driving platforms to build better solutions. More competition means better features, better pricing, and better support for trustees.

Ready to explore Bitcoin custody options for your SMSF? We help you evaluate platforms and set up compliant structures that work with your fund.

#SMSF #BitcoinSMSF #Custody #AustralianBitcoin #BitcoinTax

🏦 Institutions are moving into BTC and crypto faster than you might think

The BTC and crypto markets in 2026 look nothing like they did a few years ago. It's not just retail traders anymore. Major institutions are now allocating serious capital to digital assets.

The numbers tell the story
According to Coinbase Institutional research, 76% of global investors are planning to expand their digital asset exposure this year. That's not a niche group. Even more telling, nearly 60% of institutions expect to allocate over 5% of their total assets under management to BTC and some other crypto.

When you look at it another way, about 86% of institutions already hold digital assets or are actively planning to add them. This isn't speculation anymore. It's institutional capital flowing into the space.

How they're doing it
Institutions aren't buying Bitcoin on retail exchanges. They're using regulated products like ETFs, tokenised securities, and compliant settlement platforms. They want professional custody, proper governance, and clear audit trails. Basically, they want BTC and crypto to work like traditional finance works.

The shift is away from informal spot exposure toward registered investment vehicles. That's a sign the market is maturing. Institutions only move this way when they feel confident about regulation and infrastructure.

What's driving this
Clearer regulation is a big part of it. Europe's MiCA rules and similar frameworks elsewhere have given institutions the legal certainty they needed. Real-world asset tokenisation is opening new use cases beyond just trading Bitcoin. Stablecoins are becoming settlement infrastructure.

Why it matters for SMSF trustees
When institutions move into Bitcoin, it signals the asset class is becoming more stable and mainstream. The infrastructure that institutions demand benefits everyone, including super fund trustees. Better custody, clearer pricing, regulated platforms. These are things that make crypto holdings in your SMSF more straightforward and compliant.

Considering Bitcoin in your SMSF? The institutional infrastructure now available means better options, clearer rules, and more professional platforms to choose from.

#BTCTax #CryptoTax #BitcoinSMSF #CryptoSMSF #InstitutionalAdoption #BTCMarket #SMSFCompliance

📋 What records you actually need to keep for Bitcoin in your SMSF

If you're holding BTC or any cryptocurrency in your SMSF, the ATO expects you to maintain detailed records. It's not complicated, but it matters.

Transaction details:
Every time you buy, sell, or trade BTC or crypto, you need to document the date, the amount you spent or received, the AUD value at that exact moment, and which crypto asset was involved. If you traded Bitcoin for Ethereum, that counts as two transactions and gets recorded as such.

Where it's held:
You need to know exactly where your Bitcoin sits. Is it on an exchange? In a hardware wallet? With a custodian? Document the platform, the account number, and confirm the fund actually owns it in the fund's name, not yours personally.

Market values:
On 30 June each year (your SMSF's balance date), you need to record what your BTC (and any other crypto) is worth. This isn't a guess. You need to use a reliable source like a major exchange's closing price on that specific date. Keep screenshots or reports showing the price you used.

Why this matters:
Your auditor will ask to see these records. The ATO might ask too. Good documentation shows you're compliant and takes the stress out of tax time. Poor records can trigger questions about whether the BTC actually belongs to the fund or whether you've valued it properly.

Managing your Bitcoin records properly means smooth audits and zero compliance headaches. Why Australian BTC and crypto exchanges are better for your SMSF?

If you're buying Bitcoin for your SMSF, where you buy matters, especially when it comes to accounting and compliance.

Australian exchanges understand your tax environment: Australian BTC and crypto platforms are built with Australian tax rules in mind. They know SMSF requirements, ATO reporting standards, and how to structure transaction records in AUD from day one.

Overseas exchanges create extra work: When you use a foreign exchange, you're potentially juggling multiple currencies, conversion rates, and reporting formats that don't align with Australian tax requirements. Your accountant then has to manually convert and restructure everything, adding time, cost, and risk of errors.

Better record-keeping: Australian exchanges provide reports designed for the Australian regulatory landscape. Simple things like EOFY reports that end on 30 June helps reduce administration. They show transaction history and valuations in AUD, exactly what your SMSF audit requires.

Regulatory clarity: Australian exchanges comply with local regulations and understand how SMSF rules work. There's no guessing whether the platform supports super fund accounts or if your holdings meet compliance standards.

The practical benefit: Using an Australian exchange means cleaner records, easier audits, and lower accounting fees. That saves you money and headaches when tax time comes around.

Ready to set up Bitcoin in your SMSF the right way? 💰 How much do you need to start holding Bitcoin (or any crypto) in your SMSF?

Good news: there's no legal minimum amount required to start an SMSF and hold Bitcoin in your SMSF.

However, if your super balance is low, you need to consider whether it makes financial sense. Here's why:

The cost factor: Running an SMSF comes with ongoing expenses—annual audit fees, accounting costs, compliance requirements, and admin fees. These costs don't change much whether you have $50,000 or $500,000 in your fund.

The benefit calculation: If your SMSF balance is relatively small, the annual costs might outweigh the benefits of holding Bitcoin. You need to ensure the potential returns justify the expense of maintaining the fund structure.

A practical rule of thumb: $100,000 could be a good threshold with Bitcoin SMSFs (or investments with high potential returns), though this varies based on your investment strategy and personal circumstances.

The bottom line: You can hold Bitcoin in your SMSF with any balance, but you should run the numbers first to make sure it's worth it. 📊

Thinking about adding BTC to your SMSF? Big budget announcement this week — 30% minimum tax on discretionary trusts from 2028, CGT discount scrapped from 2027 and to be replaced by inflation adjusted CGT discounting, negative gearing limited to new builds.

But here's what didn't change — SMSFs. Treasury confirmed at the Budget Lockup that complying super funds, including SMSFs, keep their one-third CGT discount. That's still an effective 10% on long-term gains in accumulation phase. 0% in pension phase.

The case for a Bitcoin SMSF just got stronger.

Before you do anything though — these are announcements only. Big changes for Bitcoin and crypto platforms in Australia

Australia passed legislation on April 1, creating its first comprehensive regulatory framework for digital assets that requires Bitcoin and crypto exchanges and custody providers to obtain financial services licenses.

What does this mean for SMSF investors?

Platforms must now get licensed Exchanges and custody platforms must obtain financial services licenses within six months under the new framework. This brings them under the same standards as brokers and fund managers.

Better protection for your assets The law targets Bitcoin and crypto exchanges that control customer funds, aiming to reduce risks like commingling, insolvency, and misuse of assets that have caused losses in past crypto failures.

Major players already complying Coinbase has been granted an Australian Financial Services License, becoming the first Bitcoin-crypto exchange to receive this approval directly from ASIC (announced April 7).

For SMSF trustees, this means stronger safeguards when holding Bitcoin and crypto through Australian platforms. 🛡️

Need help navigating the new Bitcoin or crypto landscape for your SMSF? 🚨 3 red flags that can trigger SMSF compliance issues

1. Bitcoin (or any crypto) held in your personal name: Bitcoin must be stored in a digital wallet that is controlled by the SMSF and is separate from any BTC personally held by trustees or members. Using your personal exchange account for SMSF trades is a compliance breach.

2. Buying Bitcoin from yourself or related parties: Your SMSF cannot buy BTC from you, a relative, or another related party — it must buy from legitimate third parties. Transferring your personal Bitcoin into your SMSF? That's prohibited.

3. Donating Bitcoin instead of investing: If your reasons for using BTC isn’t to increase member retirement benefits, such as donating crypto, then this could trigger issues with the auditor.

#BitcoinSMSF #SMSF #CryptoSMSF #SMSFCompliance #CryptoAudit

📊 Bitcoin ETFs gaining liquidity in Australia

Australia now has multiple spot Bitcoin ETFs trading on the ASX and Cboe, giving SMSFs a regulated way to gain Bitcoin exposure without managing wallets or private keys.

VBTC leads in liquidity, trading about $2.8 million a day, followed by CRYP at roughly $1.4 million in average daily turnover. Other options include EBTC, QBTC, IBTC, and BTXX.

What's the appeal for SMSFs?

You get Bitcoin exposure through a regulated product that:

-Settles like shares in your brokerage account
-Comes with institutional-grade custody
-Fits within existing super fund structures 🏦

The trade-off? Management fees typically range from 0.39% to 0.98% annually, and you're still exposed to Bitcoin's volatility.

For trustees exploring Bitcoin, ETFs offer a simpler compliance path compared to direct holdings—though both options work depending on your strategy.

Considering Bitcoin ETFs or direct holdings in your SMSF? How to calculate capital gains on your Bitcoin and crypto trades

Selling, trading or using Bitcoin or crypto to pay for blockchain fees in your SMSF triggers a capital gains tax event. Here's the simple breakdown:

The basic formula: Capital gain = Sale price − cost base → offset capital losses → apply CGT discount (if eligible)

Example:

•Bought 1 BTC for $50,000
•Sold 1 BTC for $70,000
•Transaction fees: $500
•Gross capital gain = $70,000 - $50,000 - $500 = $19,500

Important to remember:

•Trading one Bitcoin or any crypto for another (e.g. swapping BTC to ETH) also counts as a sale
•You need to convert everything to AUD at the time of each transaction
•Keep records of dates, amounts, and prices for every trade
•Blockchain network fees (such as gas or sats) also trigger CGT calculations

In accumulation phase, your SMSF pays up to 15% tax on gains (or 10% if held over 12 months). In pension phase, it can be tax-free. 🎯

Need help tracking and calculating your Bitcoin or crypto gains properly? 🏦 Morgan Stanley files to custody Bitcoin and crypto

Wall Street giant Morgan Stanley has applied for a de novo national trust bank charter to allow it to custody Bitcoin and crypto, according to a filing with the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency this week.

The entity would be called Morgan Stanley Digital Trust.

This isn't Morgan Stanley's first Bitcoin or crypto move. The bank started in 2021 offering wealthy clients exposure to Bitcoin, and last month filed to debut its own Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs.

Such a licence would allow Bitcoin and crypto firms like exchanges to custody assets and move money for customers in the way a traditional bank would.

For SMSF trustees, this signals that major traditional financial institutions are building the infrastructure to safely hold Bitcoin and crypto long-term. 📈

Considering Bitcoin or crypto for your SMSF? ❌ 3 Common Mistakes When Buying Bitcoin or crypto in Your SMSF
We see these all the time—and they're easy to avoid if you know what to watch for:

1. Buying in your personal name: The Bitcoin or crypto must be held in the SMSF's name, not yours. If it's in your personal wallet, it doesn't count as a super asset. 🚫

2. Not keeping proper records: Every purchase needs documentation: date, amount, AUD value at the time. Without it, you'll struggle at tax time. 📝

3. Using an overseas exchange: Australian Bitcoin or crypto exchanges are generally much better equipped for SMSF accounts — they understand local regulations, produce reports aligned to our 30 June EOFY, and are familiar with ATO requirements. Overseas platforms often don't, which creates extra work come tax time.

Getting it right from the start saves headaches later.

Need help setting up Bitcoin or crypto properly in your SMSF? 💰 How is Bitcoin and crypto taxed in an SMSF?

Getting questions about this all the time, so here's the simple version:
When you buy Bitcoin or crypto: No tax event. ATO Alert: Crypto Audits are getting tougher in 2026 🛡️₿

If your SMSF holds digital assets, pay attention. The ATO recently updated its guidance for the 2025-26 financial year, and auditors are now required to dig deeper into existence and valuation.

With a number of new SMSFs now looking into crypto, the "good faith" era is ending. Here is what you need to have ready for your 2026 audit:

Proof of Reserves & Custody: It’s no longer enough to show a screenshot. Auditors are looking for verified exchange statements where a Type 2 report is available, otherwise a Part A qualification on the SMSF audit report will ensue.

Scam Awareness: The ATO has issued a fresh warning this February about "Non-KYC wallet" scams targeting SMSF trustees. If you receive an email asking for a "mandatory crypto declaration," it’s likely a trap. The ATO will never ask for your keys or immediate disclosure via email.

The 30 June Valuation Rule: Valuations need to be obtained at 30 June and used in the SMSF EOFY tax compliance. We use automated data tools to ensure your reporting is 100% compliant with the new ATO auditing standards.

The bottom line: The tax benefits of crypto in Super are massive, but the paperwork must be flawless.

Is your crypto reporting audit-ready? Can I transfer my personal Crypto into my SMSF? 🔍🏦

It’s one of the most common questions we get. You already hold Bitcoin or Ethereum personally, and you want to move it into your SMSF to enjoy the 15% (or potentially 0%)* tax rate.

The short answer: No. Under Section 66 of the SIS Act, an SMSF is generally prohibited from acquiring assets from "related parties" (like yourself). While there are exceptions for business real property and listed securities (shares), cryptocurrencies do not qualify.

What does this mean for you?

No "In-Specie" Transfers: You cannot simply transfer your personal coins into the fund's wallet as a contribution.

Cash is King: You must contribute cash to the fund, and then the SMSF must purchase the crypto through its own dedicated exchange account.

Audit Risk: Attempting to bypass this rule can lead to your fund being declared non-complying, with tax penalties of up to 45%.

Our Expert Tip: Always keep a clear "audit trail." Ensure every trade is executed via an account opened strictly in the name of the SMSF Trustee.

Don't let a simple transfer ruin your compliance.
