I understand your perspective, but factually: Avoiding AI-generated code feels unrealistic.

One the libraries we depend on was completely rewritten with AI recently: https://simonwillison.net/2026/Mar/5/chardet/.

The Android/iOS platforms we use for the mobile apps will be full of AI-generated code, if they aren't already.

For what it's worth, while AI coding agents certainly are very good at producing garbage code, it is now possible to produce good code with them too.

The post discusses this in some detail.

We have a LOT of apprehension about AI risk and growing fascism. But we see our leverage on these issues as limited to creating excellent self-contained communications software that treats users right.

Also, it's impossible for us to avoid AI code; even if we don't use it, our dependencies will.
