A couple of weeks ago I mentioned I was going through my old friend Ian's journals and photos.

While Ian died in1999, there are two people alive who still remember him (myself and a mutual friend in Florida).

Anyway, I've saved a handful of Ian's photos from his journals. These 3 were labeled DIRIGIBLE LOS ANGELES IN PANAMA, Feb 27, 1928.

I think Ian may have taken them - he was certainly there and all the other photos from that time are of Ian and his friends - but it is possible he acquired these airship photos from a vendor.

I think they are really cool.

Back again to 25th Street in the Mission, this time with a proper camera rather than the Polaroid.

Per Google, this is the work of Czech visual artist Adam Pizurny, known for his iconic digital art series "Projections." Pizurny specializes in virtual topology, using striped line patterns projected over human forms to create topographic, liquid-like illusions.

Anyway, I think this is the best garage door ever... although I have a contender for that title. I will post the picture of the contender tomorrow.

So one last personal post this week, because today would have been my ex-boyfriend, college roommate, and lifelong friend Cal's 74th birthday. Cal was amazing - cute, bright, funny, and sarcastic.

Unfortunately, he lost his battle with Alzheimer's last 8 months ago, after an intense, all-too-short battle.

The first picture is Cal, in bed, drinking my coffee in 1979. This is the Cal I first met in a disco, went home with, and dated until we decided to move in together as roommates and best friends.

The second picture is Cal 30 years later, when he came to San Francisco and teamed up with my then-partner to tease me mercilessly. Cal and I spent a week together, romping around the Bay Area together, exploring outdoorsy places. He wore Gore-Tex so we had to go outdoors a lot.

Anyway, I wrote a letter to Cal after he died - and sent it to a mutual friend. She approved and wrote a similar letter too.

My letter is in the alt-text of the first photo.

Three good things:

1. This week is my birthday. Yes, it's the entire week. "IT WAS THE LONGEST LABOR IN HISTORY" my mother used to say, repeatedly, every chance she got. Anyway, to celebrate, my husband Chris made birthday cupcakes, which makes him the bestest of the three good things here.

2. Exactly 4 years ago today I got a pathology report I never expected or wanted: I had anal cancer... and the margins weren't clean. But with great doctors, chemo, radiation, and 4 fun-filled trips to the OR, I got cured. And now I'm at the gym 3 times a week, lifting weights and feeling great. In one more year, we hit that magical 5 year mark and my surgeon can stop looking for trouble.

3. Finally, today, we finish 99% of the things needed to settle my friend Bill's estate. The estate sale went well, the house is sold, and the final trip under the Golden Gate Bridge to scatter Bill and his partner Gordon's ashes has been booked. Bill's 95 year journey is ending, but he will live on in our memories.

Happy hump day, everyone. Here in San Francisco it is a mild, almost cloudless, blue sky day. Terrible for gloomy photography but a good day to get outside and generate some vitamin D's. Yuck.

Anyway... a couple of days ago I posted a monochrome, 10-second, lens-zoom photo of a bridge. Here is another, taken a few minutes earlier. This one was taken with a different zoom pattern. Instead of 5 steady seconds followed by a 5 second zoom, this one used 3 steady, 4 zoom, and 3 more steady.

The pattern mattered. Instead of a picture with light streaks, this result was more "abstract double-exposure" than a jump to light speed. It's a bit of a hot mess but still kinda cool.

Heron's Head Park, yesterday, 3:41 p.m.

So here's a new twist on a bridge I've photographed many times before. This time out, I used a tripod and a variable 10-stop ND filter mounted to a sharp, smooth turning 24-105mm lens. With the ND filter set to maximum darkness and the camera at ISO 100 and f/22, I was able to take a long, 10-second exposure in bright daylight.

For the first 5 seconds of the exposure, the lens remained at 24mm to establish a solid image of the bridge. During the last 5 seconds of the exposure, I zoomed the lens out to the max to create the light streaks.

Et voilà. That's French for oh cool.

The Marin Headlands, where 100 million year old sedimentary rock has been pushed up from the ocean floor by plate tectonics long before my time.

Per Google: Radiolarian Chert (Red Ribbon Chert) is the most iconic rock in these cliffs, forming dramatic, folded, red-brown layers. It is a sedimentary rock formed from the microscopic, silica-rich skeletons of plankton (radiolaria) that settled on the seafloor. It is highly resistant to weathering, forming most of the ridge tops.

We are a month ahead of you with my friend Bill's house. The estate sale ended and the house was cleared out four weeks ago. The house is now in escrow, with a closing date possibly on May 13th.

Financially, it will not quite break even once the reverse mortgage, real estate agents, taxes, and repairmen are paid. But I am glad to have reached closure.

Well it's Polaroid Week so I dragged my shitty Gen2+ out of retirement, warmed up my last and only pack of film, and made a test shot this morning.

And indeed, the camera is still shitty -- neither accurate nor lomo enough (the latter being what I want). But at least it is exposing something rather than photographing only white haze like the last time I used it.

So maybe I'll get a few shots off later this week. Hopefully something better than this.

Simply put: when you focus on, say, a distant object in the mirror, does the camera think the focal point is distant... or just the length from the lens to the mirror (as if this was a painting, not a reflection).

In fact I think I confirmed my hunch with this shot... The focal point is distant. The edges of the mirror are blurry (out of the hyperfocal range).

Okay, I'm back with something I posted and deleted last week because the original version bugged me. This one will stick around.

Post-processing is a tricky business, especially if you pixel-peep like I tend to do with my photos.

The original version had multiple problems that were introduced at various stages of the processing. The biggest problem was banding / posterization. The gradients in the sky broke into distinct bands of luminescence and color shifts. There are lots of reasons for this: JPEG compression, poorly applied vignetting and curve adjustments, and color space remapping.

The second biggest problem? Sharpening. Mastodon, in an attempt to resize photos for various apps and devices, can make a sharp photo appear extra crispy. The original version I posted looked totally fried, especially when viewed in a browser. This one is slightly better: I toned down my own sharpening to compensate.

Anyway, here is Los Angeles. At night. 1/30th of a second. ISO 6400. Handheld.

It seems the 6 weeks of pelvic radiation four years ago did a number on my hips and femoral neck. I beat cancer but flunked my DEXA scan. This was predictable. My bones are now shit... and all the exercise in the world ain't gonna to solve the problem. So I did my research** and came to my own conclusions:

GIVE ME ALL THE PHARMACEUTICALS! STAT!

** Speaking of research, I had a good laugh last week when I came across a doctor on YouTube who said, and I quote, "your femur is the bone you would give your dog to chew on." My femoral neck, being spongy, is probably extra juicy 😁

Anyway, this is going to be fun, once I get through the achy side effects.

It appears the failed and recently shuttered Westfield Mall / San Francisco Centre has been rescued. A pair of local developers won the bid and purchased the massive, defunct mall for 10 cents on the dollar. Rumor has it they plan to redevelop the mall into a mix of housing, office, and some retail.

Fingers crossed they save the old Emporium dome atop the eastern side of the mall. Speaking of which, from my Lightroom archives, here's a picture I took in December 2009 of that grand old dome. Look at her, all gussied up for Christmas 😘

Bonus picture for today. This is the cable car barn/powerhouse... where just four 510 horsepower motors and gears pull miles of heavy cables underneath city streets, yanking 40 cable cars up and down the hills of San Francisco.

I love this place. The machinery is fascinating, the cables sing, and the smell of machine oil is intoxicating.

I'm glad you the family to pull you up. You've certainly had a lot of stress tugging in the other direction.

I'm fine, no worries - more serious than grim mostly, and I don't smile much. I'm plow through life, not skip or mince. But I do chuckle frequently. And overall I'm content and very happily married.

Don't know why but I've been leaning more and more into monochrome recently. It has weight and serious feels... and it works especially well with grim subjects. I am grim.

Anyway, here's a picture of my least favorite building in San Francisco: the Nancy Pelosi Federal Building. The building is truly awful but fun to photograph.

This is the building's side profile - the least ugly side. The back of the building, not shown here, looks like one of the sand people from Star Wars Episode IV. And the courtyard behind the building has all the charm of a world war bunker.

That said, if you really like brutalism or hate architecture, this is the building for you.

So I might go outside today because I can't go to the gym. The little snack bar in the lobby has started frying bacon on weekday afternoons for their sandwiches and the delicious delicious delicious smell permeates the air throughout the entire building. How the hell is anyone supposed concentrate on their workouts under those conditions? Srsly.

One I'm hoping successfully posts. I've been having trouble for the last 2 days seeing my own timeline. The admins at SFBA are aware of the problem and may be able to do some memory and vm tuning to fix the issue... Fingers crossed that this isn't the straw that breaks the camel's back. I like camels.
