I completely agree with that. In my previous post, I did not intend to justify the use of AI, even though it uses less energy. I just wanted to point out that the means exist and that I think people will use them. Morally, this is a difficult problem on so many levels. However, many people either don't care about morals or are not in a position to discuss this (like employees who are forced to use AI).

I'm afraid we've passed the point of being able to get rid of AI entirely. The hardware requirements of current models are decreasing rapidly, making edge or mobile computing increasingly viable. Perhaps we'll see the downfall of the big tech AIs (at least in terms of free usage), and with them, the world economy, which already depends entirely on them. However, I doubt this will be the end of big tech AI, since most governments are essentially lobbyists and will probably invest in these companies, considering AI to be fundamental infrastructure. With the current systems and capitalism in place, big tech will never fail. I hope I'm wrong, but I suspect we ordinary people are the only losers in this game...

In fact, I would even say that they look more realistic to me than the physically rendered spheres on the left. From my studies back then, I know that optical phenomena are often counter-intuitive, requiring careful analysis to understand how light refracts and disperses at specific material boundaries. Therefore, seeing an effect akin to looking through a glass of water already satisfies my brain.

In recent years, developers did not spend time optimising things since resources were abundant. Now, however, we are at a point where greedy cloud providers are trying to reduce resource usage in order to increase their profits. AI is also stealing all our consumer hardware, so it's scarce and expensive again.

Regex is so much cheaper than an additional inference step or an API call to another model. Given the number of requests that such models receive, even minor optimisations can save thousands of dollars each day. Considering how well LLMs work at the moment, I also imagine swearing being a fairly common interaction 😂

Moreover, I think that this kind of filtering might be necessary to prevent the model from using insults itself. After all, LLMs reproduce what they have been trained on, including conversations from Reddit and other forums.

While it is interesting that CERN managed to observe them, this is not particularly groundbreaking. These particles can only exist for a few femtoseconds, so they are irrelevant to us. It seems to be the same type of eye that we have, and given how complex they are, it makes sense to reduce their number to the bare minimum. However, I wonder how something like this could have evolved? Perhaps this species comes from a planet whose surface is dominated by deep fissures, and the beings need to be able to see what is in front of and above them? The walls of these fissures are probably covered in condensed water, moss and lichens, which are not very nutritious but contain chlorophyll. So these aliens are probably green for camouflage, but also because they need to perform photosynthesis themselves. 🤔

I agree! While things have never been either all good or all bad, I feel that nowadays the differences between them are becoming increasingly narrow in terms of the choices we can make. We can see this in politics in almost all countries. The alternatives are mostly populist and glamorous, but do not offer real solutions. While there is a lot of truth in this article, the reality is that Gecko is our only alternative to submitting to big tech and the Chromium monopoly. Can Mozilla do better? Yes, of course. But with a current market share of less than 3%, Mozilla/Firefox/Gecko are in a very bad position, and the fact that most websites are built and optimised for Chromium only further reduces its viability. I believe Mozilla is therefore desperately trying to acquire new users by offering AI, especially for non-tech users.

What alternatives do we have if we do not like this? Stop supporting Mozilla financially? Stop using Firefox and switch to another Gecko-based browser? Or should we stop using Gecko entirely and switch to a Chromium-based browser like Vivaldi, thereby supporting big tech directly? Either way, Gecko will eventually die, which would make the Chromium monopoly complete.

Many people are already doing this, and I believe it may cost us dearly in the future 🙁

Yes, indeed. Teachers have a responsibility towards their students that is very similar to that of parents towards their children. Abusing admiration, trust, and the power imbalance is one of the worst things you can do.

Unfortunately, I think it's human nature. If you look closely enough, you'll probably always find something negative about another person. That's why I try not to idolise anyone, preferring to separate individuals from their work as long as the latter does not reflect ill-directed ideologies or support any campaigns of that sort.

Interessanter Artikel, danke! Ich hatte auch den Eindruck, dass einige der Verhaltensweisen aus heutiger Sicht problematisch sind, damals aber von beiden Geschlechtern leider als "normal" angesehen wurden.

Also, there are some caveats that you should be aware of before using this. Firstly, the developer uses and pays for the Brave API to deliver search results. The people behind Brave are somewhat problematic, or at least they were the last time I checked a few years ago.

Secondly, the developer states that this engine uses a lot of JavaScript to perform tasks on the client device in order to reduce server costs. From his or her point of view, this is a smart thing to do. However, this should be reviewed, as it could be insecure.

Ich hab mich bisher immer schwergetan, gute Marinade für Tofu zu finden. Aus Misopaste und Gemüsebrühe kann man das halbwegs gut selbst machen. A few days ago I installed the snow addon developed by Rolle Laukkarinen (npub1zdf…6u9l) and I'm really enjoying it! It gave me the cozy winter vibes that I was missing last week due to the lack of snow in southern Germany. ❄️

This gave me another idea: Why not use it for a confetti effect to celebrate something? For example, why not celebrate the day a user joined the instance each year? 🎊

Most of the code was written by Rolle Laukkarinen (npub1zdf…6u9l), I only had to make minor changes. The confetti only appears when you are logged in, and I tried to keep it as unobtrusive as possible. It is also turned off when the reduced motion setting is used:

Describing images as you see them, and adding information that is barely visible or not visible because of compression, goes beyond "pure" accessibility. It's about context, and if you're willing to put the time into it, I think it's a good thing.

As for your special series of images: Do what feels right. After all, alt text is there to help people understand what you want to show.

I'm not surprised that Friendica had a Facebook theme. Diaspora also makes sense. Mastodon also has a Twitter-like theme (Bird UI by Rolle Laukkarinen (npub1zdf…6u9l)). I think this helps when people are migrating. Hubzilla, on the other hand, is too unique for that 🙃

It's a shame. The concepts behind Hubzilla are amazing. But marketing and presentation are big factors. And the UI/UX design in Hubzilla is very outdated in my opinion. Neuhub seems to be able to provide a more modern interface and make Hubzilla more appealing and accessible when it's finished.

The people who are still on Facebook are probably not the type of people looking for a free/decentralized alternative. And even if you Google it, all you get is Diaspora and Mastodon...

Sure, you're absolutely right. Their main focus is definitely Mastodon and they cover things beyond Mastodon on the side. I would put this down to supply and demand, as many (inexperienced/non-tech) people join Mastodon.

But I don't understand why Mastodon is so popular. Is it just because of the Twitter crash? Sure, I also joined the Fediverse when I was looking for a micro-blogging platform, but that's not for everyone.
