I write *with* my girlfriend sometimes, so I'm always thrilled whenever she reads my stories. We met and bonded over writing, becoming good friends, and eventually becoming more. So, really, that doesn't bother me. I love it. She also proofreads for me, sometimes. Stories are just our thing.

My mother occasionally reads some of my work as well. It took me ages to even share anything with her. But again, she's also thrilled and proud. She enjoys my work. It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy.

As for anyone else in my family, well... I'll let you know when I get there.

I *do* have notes, but they're never as clean as I want. I'm a bit messy but it always gets the job done for me, to be fair. My layout pages and outlines start off so neat in the beginning... If only they stayed that way.

I split my notes up like this:

• Character bios and their backstories
• Breakdown for chapters, their summaries
• Quick ideas I might randomly get at night
• Any and all worldbuilding ideas
• A glossary if it's needed (like for my cyberpunk series)
• Quotes to use for later, again from ideas at night

I'm trying to broaden my horizons and write more things. It helps to try a little bit of everything. I've grown a lot, even over the past few years. We should all continue to grow as writers.

It's actually some of my Doctor Who stories that feature quite a few of the characters, but I'm so proud of those stories as well. Getting their lines down perfectly, along with their mannerisms, always feels difficult when I'm trying to nail a scene with a ton of people in it. The more characters that you have, the more difficult things will become. I prefer smaller groups of characters in scenes, but that's just me. That's how I *usually* write, but not always.

For me, it's writing every single day, without fail, even if it's just a few sentences or paragraphs. Maybe someday that could be me. I either write nothing for a week or two, or I'm suddenly typing away like a madman, like I'm being hunted by a dark and scary god and my life actually depends on it. I wish there was a middle ground.

I'm in a writers group here in the 55+ condo village where I live with my nana. My fellow members absolutely adore me, which always feels like a shocker for some reason. I'm too down on myself sometimes, and I really shouldn't be. It's such a positive experience, and they really enjoy listening to my stories or reading my prompt answers that I'll write up. Our prompts in that group are usually a word or the start of a sentence, and we'll continue it and write 500-1k words about it.

I can't *actually* talk about it because it would be a major spoiler, and I have readers for that particular story here on Mastodon. Readers who are close friends of mine, at that. What I'll instead say is that it was the best idea I've ever had, and it all came about one night as I was talking about a certain plot point (for a character) and a "what if" with my girlfriend. "What if" slowly became "why not," and now here we are. I made it work. I'm rather proud of myself for thinking of it in the first place.

I have in the past, but I try not to. If I start something, it's because I *want* to write it, and the ideas will usually always come, no matter how long the process takes. Patience is key.

If I have to abandon something, it's because that muse and those ideas just *never* come to me. It might take a year, maybe longer. But when the realization and the feeling arrive, I'll know it's time to say goodbye and give up on the WIP. It's an awful feeling, to be honest. I hate that.

"Wings of Quiet Longing" has two antagonists. They're traditional villains as well. One is worse than the other, but not by much. Then again, it's all a matter of perspective. They aren't black and white. No antagonists should be. It's boring.

Isma (another vampire): He's the big baddie and is far older than Socrates (c. 470 — 399 BC), among many others that are mentioned within the story. His age is never stated. He kept the vampires he sired as toys, just playthings. He's a horrible man.

Duncan (another vampire): This was the man Alistair sired. He's an absolute bastard, obsessive and possessive, impulsive and animalistic. He's a beast in every sense of the word.

Good question, honestly. The only thing that I can think of is the fact that I can easily sit down and write 10-20k words in one setting. Sometimes even more. Some days they just don't come at all.

No, never. Not only is my mind a chaotic mess, but I also have an *audio* podcast. I have a "radio show" for a reason. No video stuff of me, please. I never wanted a video podcast with me in it. I have 32k listeners, give or take a few on any given week, and they don't seem to mind. However, would I try talking about it on an audio podcast? Maybe. Who knows. Someday, perhaps. But I would never stream stuff like that. I love having the ability to edit out the stupid things I say lol. Putting a podcast up and streaming something are two vastly different beasts. I edit my own paranormal podcast, and I would never relinquish that control to someone else, either. On another subject, I also stream gaming stuff, but there's no video of me in it, only the screen as I'm playing, of course.

1. I'm really honored that some of you thought this one was from me. Even my girlfriend did as well. This passage was from my favorite author, Kaylie Smith, and takes place during Phantasma. I could have chosen a hundred different quotes from this book. Gosh, I can't get enough of her writing. I just want to drown in her books. Her writing style is the closest thing I've ever found to my own as well, which she actually told me before. That touched me deeply. We've gotten to know each other and she's become a rather big fan of my Wings of Quiet Longing as well, which makes me happier than anything else in the world ever could. She's the coolest cat ever. 100/10 for her writing, highly recommend.

2. This one I had to tweak ever so slightly, only because the book is First Person POV. It's from Nocticadia by Keri Lake. She's another favorite author of mine, honestly. This particular book was a wild ride, and it was also my introduction to her writing as well. Again, I could have used any number of quotes from this one as well. So, so good. 12/10, highly recommend if you enjoy romance.

3. This one is from my own WIP. It's from a conversation between Alistair and Fenella, and it takes place during a dream sequence. I love this chapter so much, and it inspired my entire story.

For me, it's creating an internal (in my mind) and real (hand-drawn or commissioned) map of the area, so no inaccuracies are ever included while I'm working on the story itself, and that includes the layout of castles or streets. Just things like that. It's very easy to make mistakes. I'm nitpicky like that, and it helps me with the writing process.

Music. Relaxing. Reading. Watching TV. Gaming. Anything, really, to help inspire me. Any creative activities are helpful. Sometimes taking myself out of "writing mode" is actually the key. This is a *really* good prompt, but I can't think of anything in particular to write in response. I will say that I've had so much help from friends here on Mastodon in our writing community. Every little bit helps. However, I can't think of anything super surprising or unexpected. Whenever I've received a bit of help, whenever I've gotten some critiques, it's because I've asked for it.

Edit: Something finally came to mind. Someone told me that I should change the way I write, but she didn't understand that the particular POV I used was actually a thing. She was very critical and confused. It actually almost had me changing the way I write. This happened years ago but it still kind of sticks with me, sometimes. It was on another site.

I enjoy writing either of these:

Third Person Omniscient POV: The narrator has full knowledge of all characters' thoughts, feelings, and the story's past and future, enabling a god-like perspective. While less common in modern novels, it is used in classic literature and genres requiring a broad narrative scope.

Multiple (Third Person) POVs: Involves shifting between different characters' perspectives, often across chapters or scenes. This approach allows for a broader story scope and deeper character development but requires careful structuring to avoid "head-hopping" and maintain reader clarity.

Paranormal romance, romantic fantasy, romantasy, dark romance, etc. The whole shebang. Let's talk about somethings that bother me about the genre, or common misconceptions you'll find. I'll list them.

• Romantasy is only about dark themes... While some romantasy stories may have darker themes, there are also lighter and more lighthearted stories within the genre.
• Romantasy is only about love... *rolls eyes* This is a misconception, as romantasy can explore various aspects of love, including relationships, love triangles, and even love for magical creatures. Basically, understanding these misconceptions can help our readers appreciate the depth and variety of romantasy stories available in the market.
• Romance novels are all the same... This is a common belief that romance novels follow a formulaic structure, but in reality (as we as writers obviously know), they can vary widely in plot and character development.
• Romance is only about love at first sight... Ugh. Romance novels explore a wide range of love stories, including misunderstandings, personal growth, and the complexities of relationships.

Always. I'm a heavy, heavy gamer, anything sci-fi, fantasy, horror, etc. I also love Animal Crossing. I'm a huge fan of the The Witcher in general, books and games, for example. We have Baldur's Gate 3, The Witcher 3, Diablo 3 or 4, Stardew Valley, Mortal Kombat 11, Skyrim, LotRO, Call of Duty Zombies, and many others.

Gaming only further grows my creativity; it never smothers it. There's nothing better for writers, I swear. A lot of my author friends are also gamers as well.

Oooh, let's talk about #TheCityOfOpulence here, from the #DigitalDystopiaSeries. Every single thing about the setting where this series takes place surprised me, especially in the first story, which I eventually have to finish posting on AO3. Everything about it came as a shock. It developed as the story grew and blossomed. Things changed. Areas became bigger. Business came to be. Battlegrounds made themselves known. This entire setting came from a homebrew (original) #TTRPG I ran, something #cyberpunk, dystopian, and #SFF for my players, and that's also where my characters came from. They were NPCs that I created. As I began writing the story itself, attempting a novel that slowly became a series, things only grew all the bigger. I love love love this setting to death. Ethera is a beautiful, terrifying city. Citune is a gorgeous planet with tons of lore. This is my favorite setting I've *ever* created, hands down.

Balance looks different for every writer, every genre, every "type" of piece, whether it's a standalone story, a long chapter story, or only a few chapters, all of which I write. I do my best to achieve it every time. It takes time, tweaking, and planning.

I'm a romance author, so I feel called out by this prompt lol. Combine all three of those (spiritual, artistic, and sensual), and then you've got my writing. Because emotion should fill every page, and every single one of those words and what they mean should be included when you're writing romantic scenes, especially when it comes to the dark romance, paranormal romance, or romantasy genres.

To make this one easier on myself, I'll talk about my current WIP. I won't mention everything else of mine in my writing portfolio. The setting in this story is a small area in Scotland. It takes place in Moray. It made things easier just to focus on something smaller rather than a huge, vast continent or an entire world for once.

I wrote a bit yesterday and today for the first time this month. It was absolutely therapeutic. I also read the other day for the first time this month as well. That was nice. And I've read some more since then, too. I had to say goodbye to my sweet girl earlier in the month, so it's been a tough one. I'm missing my pretty black kitty, Esmeralda. I've also had a lot of medical procedures. All in all, it's been a hard month for me. 💔

Ooooh, what a fantastic question. My friends and family know me so well, and that makes this one really hard to answer for me. I might have to say (in reference to new friends) that it might be my affinity for #LEGO. I was featured in the magazines as a kid, had a fully built LEGO city (which was all original), even made a few sets that they sold, and still go to conventions and stuff these days. First off, I hate when people say that audiobooks don't count as reading. I roll my eyes so far back that I can see my brain. In my eyes, even comics count as reading as well. Why shouldn't they? I have a small circle of friends from Discord and we're all authors and artists. For birthdays, we might write or create things for each other. We also do a Secret Santa project as well every year! These are friends I've had for a decade or so.

Usually, for the friends I've done things for, my gifts have been stories related to Doctor Who, just because I *know* what makes my friends smile and what they really love. Giving is fun. Creating something to give someone is even more fun. It comes from the heart.

As much as I possibly can without overdoing things. I never used to describe things to the level that I wanted, for imagination, and I'm trying to change that. It was 2015 and I spent the entire weekend camping on the beach in Seaside Heights, New Jersey for a music festival of sorts. They're called stopovers. Long story short, Mumford & Sons get their buddies together, all their friends and their bands, and put on a hell of a show for a few days. It's brilliant. Local bands play for a few days before as well for those who are either in the area or camping, and it brings in a ton of business for the area. I had the best weekend ever, made a ton of friends, danced my heart out, enjoyed the time with my dad, and had such a blast. What a lovely time that was.

As a game or dungeon master for many TTRPGs (including DnD), I'll say this... It's drawing your own maps and things. Not enough people do it anymore. Draw stuff! Sometimes it's the plot. More often than not, it's the characters. They'll come to me first. A lot of my characters were created for either the purpose of TTRPG stuff (tabletop roleplaying games) or roleplay stories (which is just collaborative writing that I do with friends or my girlfriend), so I've already written a plethora of stories with these characters. The plots come to me later if I finally decide to knuckle down and write a long serial or just a novel with them. C'est la vie.

Edit: I should add this... It's usually a scene between characters that I've already created, and then I have to write an entire story around said scene. It's funny how that works out sometimes, isn't it?

To be fair, if readers are looking for cozy, carefree stories without ever having *any* unpleasant feelings they won't be picking up my stories from the start. Every synopsis or blurb warns of this. My work features emotion of all kinds, the good *and* the bad. The stories have a range of emotion in them, scenes that won't always be happy-go-lucky and carefree, and that's okay because it's just life. Things can't always be perfect and good, you know? Regardless of all that, this isn't a problem for me. My readers are generally looking for (emotionally) tortured characters who have good recovery journeys after the fact.

It's not very small but Alistair (in #WingsOfQuietLonging) is also an author, so I guess there's that. At the moment, it's just not having the right amount of time to do it. I'm playing catch-up with doctor's appointments and so is my nana after she broke her foot. It's 90% healed, so that's good news. But for the moment, we're just very busy. I'm still finding time to write, but things will get better as the month goes on, I'm sure.

Let me just talk about the story I'm currently working on. This is funny but the only humans/mortals are the servants and residents in the town. The majority of the main cast are vampires and werewolves. As for human characteristics, they're all very similar to mortals. The feelings or emotions, cognitive and emotional traits, social and behavioral traits, most physical traits, and personalities are all very "human," if you know what I mean.

Random: I used to be a beta reader. I did it regularly. I'm always open for just reading something and giving my opinions as well. Sometimes we just need a friend to tell us if something stinks or not, you know? It helps. And I'll be honest, whatever you THINK sucks is actually usually fantastic. Imposter syndrome is tough.

Always. I recently spoke about "vivid verbs" how in love with them I am, so I'm always finding things to add to my arsenal. We continue to learn. It's never ends, and it's a tough but worthwhile journey. I'm enjoying the ride.

That's usually the case with me. Dreams inspire me. I have very vivid ones. I watch a lot of TCM and older films or television, so sometimes I'll even dream in black and white. I'm also a fan of musicals and am myself a musician, so I'll occasionally dream in musical or Broadway format as well. But I do have very intricate, interesting dreams. Plots or characters for some of my stories might come from them. My current WIP, which I talk about quite a bit, actually originated from a dream. There's a good example.

Hands down, it's Michael Faudet. He's one of my favorite poets. He can be downright filthy (in reference to love) one moment and then heartbreakingly romantic the next. He weaves words so elegantly.

That isn't my job, not necessarily. The readers take what they want from the story. Everyone has a different "emotional journey" while reading a book, and I'm helpless to steer something like that for so many different readers. The story will tell itself, and that's that.

Alright, I'm gonna make a joke-not-joke here. I have a paranormal podcast AKA #PandasDen. *I'm* a medium. I can communicate with spirits. It takes me less than ten minutes to feel out whether someone else is a medium or not, if they're lying for attention or not, etc. You can *always* tell.

But more to the point, in reference to writing, films, photography, and art, it always takes time. Pictures are easier to digest, art takes longer, and novels take even longer. Nothing is ever the same when it comes to taking things in.

Reading your dialogue (and the entire chapter or short story) aloud. If it sounds and feels natural for the characters and for you as well, as you're reading it, then it should work. Try it sometime.

#WritersCoffeeClub 12.1 — From where did the inspiration for your current WIP come?

(Guess who's back?)

I've written Alistair, Fenella, and Duncan with friends (and my girlfriend) over the years. I love collaborative writing. I probably came up with the idea of Alistair maybe twelve years ago. The story (as in my current WIP) wrote itself. It was a challenge I gave myself for October.

Also, randomly, I just *love* vampires, werewolves, etc. I'm a GM for Dungeons and Dragons (and other TTRPGs). I love fantasy work. It's fun for me. I love adding my own spin to things, though. This story was the same. I always strive to be completely original, and I want my stories to be *different* in a good way.

I'm an indie author of many different genres and participate in a big number of zines (either for big charities or money for myself). Some of the zines are Doctor Who related things, but most are for original work: SFF, Science Fiction, Cyberpunk, Horror, Spec Fiction, Fantasy, etc. Aside from that, I also write original stories, fanfiction for many different things (again, including #DoctorWho), and the muse never runs dry.
