52 years ago, a paging system called Eurosignal was introduced in Germany on four spot frequencies just below the lower end of the FM band. France and Switzerland were the only other countries to adopt the system. The system was in use for just 24 years between 1974 and 1998.

Eurosignal sent six-digit paging messages to subscribers who paid around DM1000 (Deutschemark) for a receiver and DM25 per month for the service. The receivers were large and needed long aerials, so weren't quiet small enough to comfortably carry around.

If you've heard the Eurosignal tones before, you'll never forget them. For listeners near the transmitters in Europe the tones would be ever-present, but outside the service areas mainly during tropospheric radio openings, DXers and normal listeners alike would hear the strange tone sequencies coming through their FM radios. They were mysterious, and special. The signals would become excellent radio propagation indicators for the DXers, and they were missed after the system was closed down.

In 1996, the band AIR used the signals to good effect in their track LES PROFFESSIONELS (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0FuKrPy6h80).

Just for fun, I've made a Eurosignal simulator. It faithfully recreates the tone sequences and plays messages at random (continuously), or manually one at a time if you input some numbers. You can even add FM noise and fading for that added authentic FM radio sound!

STRONG G3 GEOMAGNETIC STORM in progress.

For the first time in a long time we're being treated to the "core" of a coronal mass ejection. Disturbed conditions will continue for many hours.

Aurora has been spotted at mid-latitudes where the sky was dark, but mid-summer sun in the north has of course hampered observations, and light pollution has confused some people! The southern hemisphere is better placed to seeing a decent show.

We're currently in the "main phase" of the storm, but there are signs that the "recovery" phase may begin soon. The DST ring current has charged up to a massive -162nT, which for geomagnetic storms is in "severe" territory. Once the DST starts to go up again we'll be in the recovery phase, which will last several days.

HF radio propagation is currently poor since the F2 layer is suppressed, especially on mid and low latitude paths.

During recovery, the upper atmosphere will heat up and expand, causing increased drag to satellites in low Earth orbit. Electrical charging of electronic components can damage satellite electronics if they're not protected. Power grids will have to dump excess energy to the ground. There will be widespread disruption to GPS signals so don't rely on them for high-precision accuracy.

The first CME in a train of CMEs is almost upon us.

At L1 the solar wind speed has has jumped up from <400km/s to >450km/s. Density and temperature have also jumped up. Energetic protons, as measured at L1 by the EPAM instrument on the ACE satellite, are rising. These are all sure signs that the CME is less than an hour from Earth.

A G2 watch is in effect for today and tomorrow.

We're in for a couple of days of solar storms, starting tomorrow (03 June) as the CME from the X1.1 flare on the 30th and several smaller CMEs reach us.

The first CME should hit before midday on the 3rd and could cause G2 level storming. NOAA SWPC has issued a G2 watch for both 03 and 04 June.

Solar proton levels have been increasing ahead of the initial CME.

A major X1.1 solar flare from Earth-facing active region AR4479 peaked at 20h52 UT 30 June. A strong R3 radio blackout took out most HF radio communications across the mid and eastern Pacific and a large part of North and Central America.

A nine-minute type II radio emission was detected with velocity of 1,496 km/s. A Type IV radio emission was also detected. A 10cm radio burst was laso detected with a peak flux of 409 sfu. These all strongly indicate the release of a CME.

The solar flux is reducing and should be below M-level within the next 30 minutes. HF radio paths are slowly recovering.

Another update today for the Space Weather Ops dashboard.

A couple of important changes:

The path estimator matrix has been overhauled to reduce the amount of chaotic flashing. Please check the colour key at the bottom of the panel for the changed indicator states.

The second major change is removal of the Kiruna magnetometer plot which was difficult to read. It's been replaced by a multi-channel bar graph which is intended to show a number of magnetometers across various longitudes, and therefore track the state of substorms.

The left part of the plot shows seven magnetometers in Alaska. The right side should show five in Europe, but only Kiruna data can be plotted in real-time from a direct feed, and the other four, which are supposed to be served by the USGS, are not showing any data. Should they appear, the plots should light up. Access to live magnetometer feeds in Europe is not easy so apologies for this.

As conditions change, an indicator on the top bar will show substorm progress. Click on the bar graphs to open a more detailed pop up page.

There are also a number of bug-fixes mainly to do with the cadence of alerts and announcements.

Proton levels as measured by the EPAM instrument on ACE at L1 are rising quickly.

This is a sure sign that the CME hasn't missed us entirely and that we will be catching the westward leg of it very soon.

If you imagine the shape of a croissant, the thinning "legs" extend all the way back to the sun to the east and west, whilst the fat core heads far away from the sun.

We can expect a long period of storming with fairly chaotic Bz values whilst the structure passes through.

CME arrival update

I'm now aware of better speed estimates from NOAA for the three CMEs. My initial values were based off of the radio burst velocities, which was not ideal.

CME 1 ~1220 km/s
CME 2 ~1129 km/s
CME 3 ~1405 km/s

So the three CMEs will be bunching up and likely arrive in a heap, quickly one after the other, but they won't overtake or cannibalise each other! The geomagnetic storm we're expecting will probably be around G3 level, but surprises do happen and it may peak higher for brief periods.

NOAA estimates arrival late on the 4th or early on the 5th. As we know from past experience, these estimates could be in error by many hours.

Some quarters are suggesting a double CME impact, the first in line with NOAA's prediction, the second later on the 5th.

This storms will likely cause aurora to mid-latitudes, but northern latitudes will have to fight the eternal twilight of the mid-night sun.

Magnetic fields do not cross each other. If faster CMEs come up behind slower ones, the CMEs bunch up like a pile of pancakes and push each other forward. They do not merge, cross or overtake each other.

A solar flare X1.1 peaked at 11h28 UT 03 June. A brief R3 radio blackout affected HF bands over Africa and Europe. Radio bands are now recovering.

Primary GOES 18 Xray flux monitoring dropped out at the peak, the secondary GOES 19 blue plot can be seen continuing here. The data drop out may not be connected to the flare. Automated apps and websites not using both sources will be reporting M9.7, but this flare reached X1.1.

The sea surface temperature in the Bay of Biscay is above 21°C already. Waters off the south coasts of south-west England are already above 16°C.

You don't normally see these kinds of temperatures until much later in the summer - late August or September. The temperature anomaly in the Bay of Biscay and north-western Mediterranean Sea is around +7°C, which is pretty scary, since NOAA's anomaly scale runs only +/- 5°C!

My Space Weather Ops dashboard has received further updates and was deployed a few minutes ago.

In the lower right, every band on every path has a coded system to say if the band is open, if it's marginal or closed, and the reason. A calculated model predicts band openings under ideal conditions, but solar flares or polar cap absorptions can cause marginal or closed bands. A live connection to a DX cluster feed backs up the model with live band openings in the preceding 15 minutes.

I've released another update today (version #260407.3).

The DRAP map includes a flashing indicator to show which base location is active in the path estimator table.

Two new (optional) columns have been added to the path estimator:

The GREYLINE column shows when the sunrise/sunset terminator is crossing the midpoint of a radio path — grey line conditions can briefly boost long-distance signals as the D-layer fades but the F-layer stays strong.

A glancing blow from an incoming CME is still expected tonight. A NOAA G2 watch is in effect until 00h UT tonight. A G1 watch is in effect for 01 and 02 April. Impact is still expected late on the 31st or early on the 1st, although historically these events are never on time!

The UK Met Office is calling a G3 watch. This is a maximum expected level and not a promise!

The fast solar wind from a coronal hole to the west of the CME is constraining the CME's path and keeping it to the south-east. The wind acts as a barrier and guides the CME to some extent. The CME itself is tilted clockwise about 45°. Earth may catch the edge of the one of the "legs" of the CME, which stretch al; the way back to the sun as the CME expands outwards into the solar system.

"In 2025, the government estimated a 5-25 percent chance of a severe space weather event by 2030. However, according to the NAO, the UK is not well prepared. Despite severe space weather being added to the UK's National Risk Register in 2011, and some investment in developing the country's forecasting capabilities, the NAO warned that the government "does not yet understand the full range of possible impacts and cascading effects well."

It has also not "yet set out how resilient it would like the UK to be to severe space weather, nor what level of resilience its spending will provide."

G1 geomagnetic conditions continue today following the CME impact yesterday evening. Further storming up to G2 levels is possible as further small CMEs reach Earth over the weekend.

The solar wind speed is moderate at 400-500km/s and IMF field strength (Bt) is strong at around 25.7nT.

Aurora was visible at high latitudes. Amateur radio operators also reported auroral contacts at high latitudes.

I made a thing!

With the help of Claude AI, I made a new mapping backend for LiveMUF.

The entire thing — 3D WebGL renderer, ionospheric physics, signal animation, Es detection, MUF modelling, band matrix, 2D map, live database connection — fits in a single HTML file of about 3,000 lines. No npm, no webpack, no dependencies beyond D3 and TopoJSON loaded from a CDN. A helper file interfaces with the LiveMUF SQLite database and forwards spots to the map as they appear. I'll need to work on a version for MySQL. It currently only runs on a PC which already has LiveMUF installed and capturing spots to a local database.

It renders propagation paths in realtime, projecting the signal path via realistic estimated bounce points around the globe. Ionospheric height is correctly rendered. Glowing areas appear at the reflection points and show sporadic-E clouds, coloured according to frequency (but not yet directly linked to the estimated MUF).

I'll follow up with more videos.

The sun is spotless for the first time since 2022! This is definitely a sign that we're on the long slide back down to solar minimum. The official synoptic map is currently showing no active regions on the visible disc!

The calm may not last long as there are a number of active regions and unstable filaments on the far side and coming around the east limb. The radio bands are quiet now, but there's potential for filament eruptions in the coming days which will raise the radio noise and improve chances for aurora.

GOES-19's CCOR1 solar imager caught the moon dancing around the sun this morning, as seen in this timelapse.

Two far side CMEs are also visible, at 05h and 09h UT 18 Feb. A C1.5 flare occurred at the same time as the 05h CME but I couldn't find the source, so I assume it was off the limb.

The white flashes are likely caused by the limb of the Earth.

AR4366 finally calmed down . It's not produced any flares greater than M-level for two days.

Geomagnetic conditions: Aurora has been visible at high-latitudes for a couple of nights. A new CME from AR4362 in the south-west quadrant (released by an M1.2 flare on 05 Feb) may impact Earth tomorrow 08 Feb. Twofurther minor CMEs, will likely cause disturbed conditions to continue through to 10 Feb.

CME update: NOAA (US) and Euphoria (European) solar wind models suggest the CME imact could be a little later than the early NASA model predicted.

NOAA suggests a double hit, initially late on 5th Feb, with a higher peak around midday (UT) on the 6th. Euphoria suggests a single hit during the morning of the 6th.

Solar Flares: There have been around 19 flares exceeding M level since 10h UT 02 Feb (yesterday). The largest was an M7.2 peaking at 07h UT 02 Feb.

AR4366 continues to be very active. It's looking a little less potent now but the potential for large flares continues.

Apologies to BSky readers who will see this message split over multiple posts.

My XRay Flux Colourgram has lit up like a Christmas tree over the last 24 hours, all thanks to active region AR4366. This region has gone bonkers with activity since it appeared a few days ago. The region is Beta-Gamma-Delta, meaning that X-flare activity was a possibility. It's lived up to the promise!

It's worth noting that flares peaks are denoted by the highest XRay Flux values. In this case, AR4366 has been continually eruptive. Tagging every peak to an explosive eruption may not be accurate in terms of saying "there were this many flares above a certain value". Ongoing eruptions can just cause the flux value to vary up and down. With the flux "floor" now up above M-level, I've only listed peaks above M2.

HF radio conditions: Lower frequencies are feeling the effects of the high XRay flux with periodic blackouts between R1 and R3 on the daylight side. Conditions are likely to remain poor for the next week. Radio noise will be severe and may increasing during the next 3-5 days as further active regions rotate into view.

The fun is over for now, the solar storm has ended. The solar radiation storm has also reduced below S1 level this afternoon (UT), having reach up to S4 level.

It was a complicated storm because there were actually several CMEs launched, with the large coronal hole squeezing the trajectories. Space weather scientists will be pawing over the data for months to come!

What is clear is that things could have been a whole lot more exciting, because when the initial storm front hit us at 19h UT on 19 Jan, the Interplanetary Magnetic Field (IMF) Bz was strongly positive, at more than 55nT. This reduced the impact significantly, but had it been negative we could have been looking at numerous electrical grid outages, satellite disruption and more.

It wasn't until a few hours later that the Bz swung south for a long period, giving hours of stunning aurora stretching well into the mid-latitudes.
