I'm not a big fan of using herbicides in the garden but when I see organic gardening influencers dumping vinegar and salt water on weeds I recoil in horror. Like, sure, herbicides increase cancer risk, so limiting exposure is wise, and absolutely avoid any of the ones that don't break down... but salt and acid permanently alter you soil chemistry. Talk about forever chemicals. Is that really what we want?

I haven't looked carefully into the relative concentrations but does this sound reasonable?

Love hammock camping in winter because it keeps me up off the snow, which would have soaked a tent in these melting conditions. Also no need to dig out a flat spot.

Here I haven't put the underquilt on yet. Tarp is there to keep the dew off. I generally rig it pretty flat like this I can see out and let's airflow through, unless it's rainy or there's a cold wind I want to block. In that case there's a "storm mode" where it can entirely enclose the hammock.

My favorite tree: Callitropsis nootkatensis
"Alaskan Yellow Cedar" at various stages of growth in Olympic National Park.

Young saplings have flaky bark and often grow in sweeps and curves. The feathery foliage hangs down from the boughs. The trunks of mature trees are an elegant light grey.

The best part is the smell. Something like a cross of Juniper and Western Red Cedar. Spicy, pungent, and crisp.

The tree I posed with was labeled "World Record Alaskan Yellow Cedar" at 12ft diameter (3.7m) and 120ft (366m) tall.

The whole process could be a lot faster. I could chuck the Allen wrench in my cordless drill and set the torque limiter. I could get a drill bit of the right size. It takes something odd like 9/32 so I've been drilling 1/4" holes and using a round file. I could be using self tapping screws like everyone else. But this project is not about efficiency. It's not quite clear what it is"about" yet but I'm enjoying tinkering.

As part of #vanconversion project I've been installing 10-24 threaded rivet nuts to create attachment points in sheet metal.

I broke and returned two of the lever style rivet tools you can buy online for $50. Both had these custom mandrels (fancy machine screws) that attach to the rivet and pull the back toward the front. Both tools lacked sufficient feedback to tell me when to stop applying force, with predictable results.

This little gizmo is about $2 in parts from the hardware store and has installed dozens of rivets.

Finally got to put my skis on snow this season. Had a great time yesterday. Perfect weather, groomed trails, and nearly 4 hours of solitude. This area has a bunch of lava tubes. One is mostly collapsed with these natural bridges left over it in places.

I didn't know rabbits would go after crocus. I guess I've seen them eat just about everything else though so why not?

I tend to think that the fast growing prey animals like rats, mice, rabbits, etc need artificial population controls when they are living alongside humans. Their natural predators don't coexist with us as easily and it leads to population explosions.

But my kiddos vehemently disagree, so I've laid off the rabbit hunting last few years. 🙃

Loowit trail as it descends from the uplands into the blast zone.

To live in the pacific northwest is to be aware of the cataclysmic forces that shaped our landscape. We are surrounded by the evidence in towering volcanoes, basalt cliffs, cinder cones, lava fields, and the coulees and gorges carved by the Missoula floods.

When I visit these places the veneer of civilization is peeled back, I see the depth of power in the earth, and feel awe, wonder, and a sense of my place in time and space. I am a momentary spark in the vast story of the world.

Finished reading Looking for Alaska by John Green last night, because reading banned books is resistance. It was very good I highly recommend.

I can see why it's on some highschool reading lists. It's a coming of age story that sincerely grapples with many of the hard questions humans need to answer to go on living and I'm sure makes a fantastic jumping off point for discussions.

It put me in mind of a favorite Le Guin quote. "There was not one forest but many, all full of bright tigers of meaning."

There's no one answer but many. If we're very lucky we might encounter many answers in our lifetimes.

I think unless you've spent time in a wilderness area it's difficult to appreciate how rare and special these places are. So much of the western US looks like empty land, but you're actually looking at first growth forest (managed for logging), rivers full of mining or agriculture runoff, or range land. The few relatively untouched wilderness areas are unique and beautiful whole organisms that need protection. Once developed, they will not regenerate for 1000s of years if ever.

I love my hammock all year, even in the snow! Nothing like floating in a cozy cocoon.

I used an under quilt with a foam pad in the hammock instead of two under quilts. May be lighter and/or more versatile. Snowshoes help a lot and can be used to pack down snow under your setup. I've got snow anchors but haven't actually used them yet. Always been able to improvise.

A sled sounds like a great idea! I should be shopping for one now.

This morning I finally gave up, grabbed a step ladder, and disconnected all the bulbs in the fixture. I can deal with darkness easier than a high pitched drone.

This afternoon when I got back from a meeting, one of the bulbs was back on and two were removed. Blessedly the one they left doesn't buzz.

The office lighting saga continues! For those just joining us, some time in November all the overhead lighting above my office quit. After a month they replaced the lights while I was out but it was making a horrible but highly localized buzzing sound. You could literally only hear it while sitting in my chair or standing right in front of my desk. I measured it with my phone to prove I wasn't crazy. I immediately requested they fix it but nothing happened (despite frequent nagging) until today.

I spent today mentoring a group of our junior engineers, something I love doing, but it was strange. I was a decade older (2 decades in one case) than anyone in the group. I had a weird feeling of displacement, inhabiting a role that, in my mind, has always belonged to other people.

Technical leadership isn't new to me. I'm used to sharing knowledge. But the pronounced age gap added a different energy, that gives me pause.

I didn't mind it. It's not bitter or sad that I feel. It's more jarring and a sense of being unprepared. I don't know what filling this role means to me.

I had an experience once where the temperature dropped suddenly at the same time the wind can up. Trees were not just creaking but shattering and breaking. It sounded like explosions. One of the few times I've felt unsafe in a forest. We quickly packed up camp with half an eye out for falling trees and high tailed out of there!

I was talking it over with my wife just today. I think one key is to get rid of the idea that interruption equals failure. Lots of things have disrupted my routine and then I've fallen out of the habit. Long term consistency is about coming back to it, again and again and again.

My miles hiked/walked/run for the year just ticked over 500. I'm pretty proud of that, both for the 300% improvement over just a couple years ago and for how I consistently showed up this year, even when it meant slogging around the local park in the rain.

When I was 10 my grandma was dying and the family gathered at her house for one last Christmas together. I can still feel that grief as a physical thing. It filled the house so that it was hard to breathe.
There's been many better holidays since and some just as sad. For me, Christmas has never been wholly joyful, it's always been shot through with grief. The crass sugary cheerfulness our culture pushes this time of year makes me physically ill.

The big trip of 2025 was to Olympic National Park. I had a 75 mile loop planned starting in the Grand Valley, but after two nights in the high country I was concerned about the amount of wildfire smoke blowing out of the south and decided to change plans. Hiked out and headed for Third Beach instead. It was an amazing trip. I saw bears, swam in alpine lakes, enjoyed sunrise in the mountains, wandered the beach, and slept beside the ocean. The Olympics are easily one of my favorite places on earth.

Also reading this article this morning (how far is "driving distance?") The Wind River High route sounds incredibly but maybe a bit spicy for me.

Every year in the winter I make plans for possible summer backpacking trips. I always plan more than I will be able to do to accommodate the vagaries of wildfires, sickness, permits, etc. So far the '26 short list looks like:

1. Summit Mt Shasta
2. Circumnavigate Mt Glacier
3. Teton Crest Trail
4. Wind River Range (Titcomb to Cirque of Towers)

What about you? If you had a week to spend anywhere in the American west (remote alpine preferred) where would you go?

Finally figured out a better way to attach the blade on my blackberry thwacker version 2.5. drilled a hole all the way through and made a rivet out of a piece of 3/16" mild steel round stock. Feels much more secure.

I missed international mountain day! In belated celebration here is a rare view of the blast zone of Loowit (Mt St Helens). This view is so impressive and I'm so glad I made this trip. Hopefully one I will be able to repeat.
