I’m not a nutritionist, and I cannot interpret the data correctly. I also think that a lot of the disagreements in nutrition come down to people who cannot interpret data correctly deducing absolute opinions from the data. Therefore I try to follow people who are qualified and unbiased, and do not talk in absolutes, who can interpret the data well and then merely show what the data represents. I try to avoid anybody telling me that any diet is the absolute unquestionable optimal one, even though I follow what is considered a niche diet, I don’t dismiss other diets and think most can be done healthily in some way or another.
I think the guy at nutrition made simple does a great job at this and he basically goes thru studies in a fairly unbiased manner and tells you what they suggest.

I would assume that we agree on a lot in regards to nutrition and realistically I am being very nit picky! because at the end of the day if people ate this way as advertised in the pyramid it would be far better the average SAD diet.
And I want to make it clear that I’m not even advocating for my diet, (im whole foods plant based) I’m simply advocating for what I think the research points towards and following the data over biases - of which the Mediterranean is always the clear victor, and it includes some but minimal animal products, which I don’t eat. I think my diet is best for me, but I think the best general diet to be prescribed for a large population without individual consideration would be Mediterranean - purely based on research. That’s not to say Individuals like us may consider keto, plant based or anything other diet more healthy for our selves and be able to eat optimally (or conversely some can find ways to do it unhealthily!) within that framework. I just wouldn’t prescribe those specific diets that as a general diet unless followed optimally (which generally just includes adding more Mediterranean aspects back in).
And I largely agree with you, but I’d just point out that most carbs in modern day food are ultra processed and usually are lumping unprocessed quality grains in with them which just muddies the “carbs” picture in a way that is unhelpful.
Anyways, all this is to say, I’m not arguing with you, just stating where I’m coming from (and like I said, it’s nit picky and I don’t disagree with anything you said)

There is a lot of research on keto and the results are mixed compared to Mediterranean diet. That’s not to say that one can’t live healthily doing keto or including meat in their diet, but the unwanted effects of meat are cumulative. My first comment was strong and I was just having a laugh.
But if I’m not just being purely facetious -
a/ red and some processed meats are carcinogenic and saturated fat should be limited and b/ whole grains are good for you and they don’t need to be limited. This research is undisputed (excluding “influencers”) and I understand people really want to see their diet represented by an FDA approved chart, but that doesn’t make it scientific, and I’m merely pointing out that our top and longest studies have found Mediterraneans to have optimal health and long lives and they have emphasis on different foods than this than this arrangement.
At the end of the day nobody follows the guidelines anyway so it doesn’t really don’t matter, but to say eat as much meat as you want consequence free just doesn’t reflect the quite unanimous research we have.

It even exists in this counter factual argument as well, which is not presented with corresponding data or evidence and is therefore just anecdotal narrative. People have adverse reactions to vaccines, drugs, innocuous foods all the time. It is not a gotcha and just because they do doesn’t mean vaccines are bad.
I don’t see anyone trying to ban peanuts and they kill orders of magnitude more people than vaccines. The fact that they’re floating around in many foods when people can literally die if they come in contact could be considered insane, but for some reason culturally we don’t think that.

I don’t doubt that mainstream media, or even some mainstream research attempts to remove data points, limit knowledge - of course that happens. I don’t doubt that data, research and “science” itself isn’t doctored. That isn’t my point. But maybe when I say “science” I view it as this.
I see science as the sieve, not the pile of sand. Science is the filter, not all empirical claims made ever.
Bad data, mad models, p hacking are eventually rejected and replication and adversarial scrutiny remain.
So to clarify my meaning, when I say data is data, I mean scientific data that has survived scrutiny, not all empirical claims.
Hypothesis > prediction > falsification > replication at the protocol level is what I trust about science, not the human layer error, which is real.
I am also not saying that I am right and you are wrong and my opinions are loosely held until better information arises. I just don’t see the case for anti-vaccine rhetoric being made in a clear scientific manner, and sometimes there is no pushback to certain topics and claims made in bitcoin land.

Reading a modern university textbook is not how you become experienced in any given field of interest. Becoming a scientist is a lifelong interest in a field. What you are describing is exactly what I’m railing against, a narrative crafted as science with all these science looking data points. You can “do the work” and become an expert in a given field and verify these things for yourself. This is obviously a huge undertaking, so obviously one must outsource this. You can find trustworthy communicators that only use good data and research as evidence and explain why. You can also question everything and find influencers who will craft any narrative with hodgepodge studies with the information you are searching for and provide zero real verifiable evidence and that seems like science. This can be something that is presented as mainstream media sometimes.
This is why I trust that because very few immunologists and biologists are kicking off about vaccines, and a very large subsection of influencers are, that there is a mismatch in the ability to interpret the data.
Knowledge is power. Just because a mainstream narrative is untrue doesn’t mean the converse counter narrative is true. The world is nuanced, good data exists and it can suggest certain things are evident.
This is why I won’t buy the antivax argument until someone can present me with anything that isn’t just an anecdote or a weaponised narrative masked as science, because being a skeptic means remaining skeptical, even of scepticism.
