Within an hour of waking up I have climbed the equivalent of a 24 story building just from using Tokyo transit. Over the day I will do it once or twice more, and again when returning. On average. Since January 1st I have logged less than 30 minutes in a car. It isn't difficult to stay in shape in a city like this. The aesthetics aren't thrilling though.

In 2019 I visited the "Den Grønne Genbrugshal" in Copenhagens Christiania autonomous enclave. The building itself is from 1847 (first photo, which I found online, other photos are mine), and used to be a riding school attached to the barracks of an army garrison. Since 1978 it houses recycled and second hand building materials (anything from work clothes to tools to lime to wood and insulation), which are available to the public from 2011. You could probably walk in here with a handcart and after a few visits build your own home.

Chronic lower back pain cost the US $100 billion annually directly and two or three times that if you include indirect costs like loss of labour. However simple walking for about 1.5-2 hours daily reduced the risk of developing it by 23%. The cost reduction for society encouraging us to walk more and drive less are potentially huge (not even starting to count all the other health positives of walking). Why not start with encouraging the building of walkable mixed high density neighborhoods and towns that was the human norm for thousands of years? And make them walkable. We know from studies on campuses and theme parks that even Americans are happy to spend far more than 2 hours on their feet if they can be distracted by alluring or interesting surroundings.

A 1922 brick building with a glazed terracotta cladding. All of it factory made. Louis Sullivan might be gone but we can easily copy and mass produce his designs. Terracotta is cheap and easily manufactured by small local factories and artisans. We used to have catalogs where you could order the exact facade you wanted and hire a local worker to put it up on your steel frame, brick front, timber frame, rammed earth, cob, stone, adobe or straw bale building. We can do this again.

It would be easy for immensely wealthy places like California to build entire neighborhoods or cities impervious to wildfires. But of course they won't. However as an experiment it would be interesting if California could allow a single street to be built using traditional earthquake and fire-proof building methods: thick walls of earth, no gutters to collect flammable debris, windows and doors that can be easily sealed with wet clay and shuttered to not shatter from heat, and tiled roofs that won't catch fires from embers. Like the Japanese Kura storehouses. A system of neighborhood covering sprinklers would also be extremely efficient and not even require a new type of homes. Fire season is coming. As usual.

On Japanese Twitter the big outrage de jour is the editor of an art journal dissing his hometown for being lacking in culture ("there's nothing but a shopping mall"). Obviously small town people are offended and pointing out the particular charms of his particular hometown (and doing absolutely valid but also nasty comparisons to the other kind of cultural nadir that he currently resides in, a nouveau riche tower apartment) while calling for his public apology. The sad thing is that everyone involved is correct but nobody wants to admit that the other side has incredibly valid points that are never ever in a million years up for public discussion. In Japanese media today you will find a thousand published articles about the Gaza conflict but not a single article on the ongoing aesthetic impoverishment of Japan. It is depressing.

I believe that we have already reached history singularity. There are books and documentaries and movies being made about current events while still ongoing. People write history books in anticipation of events. Even more damning is that all current history wether pop or academic is more about the current times than whatever it is supposedly describing. There is simply no truth or even attempt at objectivity. It is all mere commentary on ongoing political events and cultural revolutions.

Regarding the ever ongoing debate on suburb vs. urban life for families. If you liv in a car dominant society and you are used to driving everywhere, it is an easy trade-off to move out to suburbia or new developments to acquire that "space" (or backyard). The cost of doing so is small compared to the savings from avoiding the negatives of city life in most of the contemporary West. However, I believe it is dishonest to say that children or teens (who can't drive anyway) are more keen on having the "space" rather than easy access to friends and peers to play with.

Having said that, most of our cities (even here in Japan) are now so completely uninhabitable by children acting independently that even relatively safe and clean urban environments where public transit is cheap and efficient have stopped offering the benefits of urban life as perceived by children.

When the benefits of living in the best possible cities are outweighed by the simple fact that any child is never more than one false step away from sudden death on city street, and there is no viable alternative, you will get children who learn to self-medicate this modern illness with voluntary isolation, games, social media, etc.

Children don't want a backyard, parents want backyards. Children want other children, but we as a society have decided that cars are the most important thing in the world.

So we have doomed ourselves to live in a sort of urban or suburban prisons.

Drywall is manufactured from mined natural resources often with a mix of recycled contents from coal power plants, contaminated with heavy metals, arsenic, off-gassing formaldehyde etc. The production is energy intensive. Installation is hard on human bodies leading to more cases of occupational injures than almost any other building trade. At the end of its lifecycle (currently a couple of decades at most) it is inevitably landfilled leading to further pollution.

Or you can go with wood paneling. It literally grows on trees, a huge carbon sink, lasts for many centuries, so clean you can compost it, no off-gassing, and when you move house or tear it down, you can take it with you and reuse again and again.

At the Nishihonganji temple in Kyoto (current buildings from 17th-18th century) you can spot many example of playful woodwork, umeki, used to repair knotted wood. It is a thrifty use of wood that would otherwise have been discarded. There are mountains, hearts, birds, fish, elephants, plants, incense burners etc. You can tell the carpenters that built these almost 400 years ago enjoyed their work.
