Maybe not willy-nilly, but vibration will cause an IC to unseat from a dual-wipe socket faster than a machined socket. Another problem I've noticed with wiper-style sockets is that the contacts are flimsy and can be crushed if the registration between the pin and wiper is off. There will be a weak or no connection, the socket is ruined, and the fault isn't immediately visible. I'm not arguing for machined sockets. They are often a pain in the ass.

Yeah, that seems very wrong. Apple II should be about 8.3 ms on average, strictly based on the time it takes an NTSC signal to paint the CRT. The time it takes for a key press to put a character into display RAM is about 10 microseconds (10 cycles at 1.023 MHz).

On real hardware connected to a color TV, it's technically possible to suppress the color burst signal, but it is not designed to do that. You have to synchronize continuously running code to the video signal's horizontal blanking interval. During the front porch or breezeway (before the color reference burst), switch to text mode for a few cycles, then switch back to graphics mode during the back porch (before the HBL ends). Getting in sync is the tricky part.
