I would argue time horizons and peoples preferences are all relative. To a bitcoiner two years isn’t a long time but to someone trying to build financial freedom and compound wealth, two years is a material amount of time with material consequences.

Just pointing out that in a time period where, in theory, bitcoin should have outperformed literally everything (tradfi was even calling it “the debasement trade”) it was one of the worst investment you could have made. So the only option is to just cope and double down on your conviction…

It’s really challenging, borderline impossible, to understand this stuff without some base level knowledge of economics (Austrian vs Keynesian, what is money?, etc.). You have to learn algebra before you can learn calculus.

The Fiat Standard is what she needs to read but Saif’s writing comes across as arrogant and preachy to the uninitiated.

With that said, I find “The Price of Tomorrow” by Jeff Booth to be the most accessible book that isn’t shoving bitcoin down your throat. An underwhelming “basic” answer but I don’t see another way. Everyone has to go on their own journey

I attempted to write an article (without using AI) to a normie audience explaining why AI is ironically inflationary. I found it extremely difficult to distill a complex topic. It just turned into a word salad.

Then I gave in and asked Claude. In 5 seconds spit out what took me hours to try and articulate way better than I ever could. Below is what I believe is the most concise way of explaining. Besides the fact that I have to accept I’m a horrible writer, it only sunk in more about how cooked we really are.

“The core insight is that the modern financial system runs on debt, and debt requires income to service. When AI systematically eliminates jobs or suppresses hiring at scale, it doesn't just create a social problem — it creates a balance sheet crisis. Unemployed and underemployed workers can't pay mortgages, auto loans, credit cards, or student debt. Default rates rise. The securities built on top of those loans — the CDOs, CLOs, ABS products, and money market instruments that underpin the financial system — start to crack. Banks tighten. Credit freezes. The whole leveraged edifice wobbles.

At that point, the Federal Reserve faces its usual impossible choice: let the system clear and risk a depression, or intervene with liquidity. It will print. It always prints. And the injection of trillions of dollars to backstop failing credit markets is, by definition, monetary inflation — every dollar created dilutes the purchasing power of the ones already in circulation.

The deepest irony is that AI makes production cheaper while making money worth less. You might be able to get a widget for half the price, but if the dollar buys 30% less than it used to, you're not ahead. Productivity gains get swamped by monetary debasement. The technology that was supposed to make everyone richer instead accelerates the wealth transfer from savers and wage earners to asset holders — the people who own the AI, the real estate, the equities — while the Fed's money printer quietly taxes everyone else.

Appreciate the last bit at the end of as well. It's refreshing to hear as someone who didn't really go down the rabbit hole until early 2024. I can confirm the past two years have been pretty brutal... I'm sure I have it easier in certain ways but it's definitely been a trial by fire.

A story of who we are building for:

Was having a conversation with the barista at my local coffee shop who I've been friends with for over 4+ years. He's in his young 20s and has been working full time in coffee since he was 18. He intentionally chose to not go to college and take on student loan debt. Quite a wise decision for a young man. He loves what he does and has a goal to keep growing and eventually start his own business one day.

He also lives paycheck to paycheck and was telling me how this past month he had just enough money in his bank account to pay for rent and his credit card bill. However, he messed up the timing of his credit card payment to where it settled in the banking system before the rent payment did. Which caused his rent payment to get declined for insufficient funds. He wasn't even aware of it until it was already considered past due. However, he couldn't cover the remaining balance until two weeks later when he got his next paycheck. He tried to negotiate with his apartment complex and came home to a letter on his door saying he was getting evicted.

Simultaneously, he was also two months behind on his car payment (which he needs to get to his job). He thought he could go up to 3 months without getting repo'd. But having to reallocate his monthly funds caused him to miss another car payment. He comes outside to find his car missing (on top of thinking he's getting evicted). He then has to spend hours figuring out where it is and how to get it back just so he can get back to his job to make the money to pay his rent.

Hearing this story crushed me. This was a real humans life experience. A face you can put to a name. He eventually sorted it all out and isn't getting evicted and got his car back. But the amount of stress and anxiety it created in his life was immense. Not to mention the time and extra money (that he doesn't have) that is spent trying to resolve these issues. That energy could instead be used to work and avoid these problems in the first place. It's a brutally demoralizing feedback loop. I offered my support in any way I could and advised him to avoid getting into debt at all costs. People don't want handouts. They want dignity and self respect but at a certain point it becomes a tradeoff you have to consider.

Of course I couldn't help but think about how all of this could have likely been avoided if his payments were instantly settled. But this isn't even a bitcoin thing. This is reality for how a majority of people in America live. Being poor makes your life exponentially more difficult. These are the people who need tools of empowerment and freedom the most. These are the people who we are building a better world for.

I’ll preface by stating that Jeff Booth (nprofile…w2ua) changed my life. The Price of Tomorrow and his perspective fundamentally altered my worldview. Jeff singlehandedly orange pilled me and sent me down the rabbit hole. For that, I will be eternally grateful.

On the contrary, I’m beginning to struggle with this type of messaging in the bitcoin community. To those who did not enter bitcoin independently wealthy or have yet to obtain financial freedom through it, statements like this come across as an intellectual slap in the face and completely out of touch with reality.

A growing number of people are waking up to the insanity of the fiat world and moving their time, energy, and money to bitcoin and freedom tech. Those same people have watched ~50% of their purchasing power evaporate in the past 5 months. That simply can’t be ignored by saying it doesn’t matter because 1 BTC = 1 BTC and the fear/cognitive dissonance they're experiencing stems from putting their energy into a broken system just to survive and support their family.

Obviously this becomes a time preference conversation and doesn’t change any fundamental long term thesis. But bitcoiners must accept that, for now, the overwhelming majority of people are still tethered to the fiat world whether we like it or not and no amount of ideology will change that any time soon. We can all agree that a debt based system predicated on theft will eventually fail at some undetermined point in the future, but that doesn’t solve for today. Ultimately, today is the only thing that matters for 99% of Earth's population.

Fear and cognitive dissonance are abstract ideas to some but are very real to others. That’s all I want us to admit and acknowledge. The response will be some version of “it’s part of the journey” or this is the world being a mirror and maybe it is... but the harsh truth is Bitcoin *doesn't* fix this. So instead of admitting this inconvenient truth we like to double down on our conviction.

I have nothing but love and respect for Jeff and the work he’s doing. I’m just expressing some frustration and offering what little perspective I have for people who want to take the leap down this path.

I can see now this was obviously an emotional response. While the feelings I had at this time are still valid, I’ve thought a lot about how I want my public presence on the internet to be.

Ultimately, I realized it doesn’t have to be a black or white/all or nothing thing. I just need to be slightly less unhinged and not cryptographically sign all of my batshit crazy thoughts to live on the internet forever. With that said, it’s great to be back in the amazingly weird corner of the internet that is nostr. This is where I belong.

Like many others have already articulated, the Charlie Kirk assassination yesterday was a turning point for me personally. It shocked me and instilled a sense of fear in me that quite honestly, I needed.

Last night and this morning the only thing I can think about is the safety and security of the people closest to me. That is my number one priority.

Like many others have already articulated, the Charlie Kirk assassination yesterday was a turning point for me personally. It shocked me and instilled a sense of fear in me that quite honestly, I needed.

Last night and this morning the only thing I can think about is the safety and security of the people closest to me. That is my number one priority.

Unfortunately, that led me to the conclusion that I will likely no longer use this npub since I’ve doxxed myself. This makes me feel extremely sad. Nostr has allowed me to be my true and authentic self and I thought I would be able to balance that with personal privacy, but I currently don’t feel it is wise to be putting myself out here like that.

To everyone in this community, myself included, it’s time to go full cypherpunk. Re-read Eric Hughes manifesto if you have to. We need to quit fucking around with the fiat games. That world is collapsing as we speak. What will your MSTR shares be worth when the dollar is worthless? Now is the time to embrace open protocols and freedom tech. Not because we want to, but because we have to.

As someone who's worked in clinical research for almost a decade I can tell you this is so intellectually dishonest and hypocritical (and yes, I acknowledge I'm still "part of the problem").

While I'm not a clinical expert, I understand how pharma and government contracting work from the business side. I'm here to tell you this whole thing was a grift from the jump. Anyone with experience in research will tell you that AEs and SAEs are taken very very seriously in clinical trials. That all just went out the window in 2020. Simply put the government is acknowledging they have been lying to you for 4+ years.

"The FDA’s new Covid-19 philosophy represents a balance of regulatory flexibility and a commitment to gold-standard science. The FDA will approve vaccines for high-risk persons and, at the same time, demand robust, gold-standard data on persons at low risk." This statement is complete psychological manipulation and how history gets rewritten.

What this statement actually means is "Now that big pharma has secured a bag with impunity and it is no longer politically convenient to force this narrative, we will accurately align with scientific integrity and voice our concerns over the safety and efficacy of these products." It's like the scene from The Big Short where Goldman calls Michael Burry after ghosting him because they got the liability off their books and can now accurately value his short position because it is in their interest to do so.

This needs to be called out for what it is. I know MartyBent (nprofile…j70t) is still beating this drum but the message needs to get out there. Many people like Mary Talley Bowden & Jack Kruse have been saying this for a long time and have been completely shunned and threatened by the medical establishment. We cannot let this outright fraud and criminal behavior get swept under the rug. Unfortunately, we're the only adults in the room.

I don't really know what to do with all of this but if there is any way to keep this conversation in the zeitgeist I'm here for it.

Bitcoin is simultaneously complex and simple. This is what most people actually struggle with, holding two conflicting ideas at the same time. To understand its simplicity one must also understand its complexity. Because without that framework, it is too good to be true.

To see Bitcoins simplicity you have to internalize that it’s a truly decentralized, military grade, self regulating network that doesn’t use time as we know it. Once you can see that it seems very simple. But there’s no way to explain that to someone with no frame of reference without sounding like a absolute crazy person 😅

There are those who say Bitcoin doesn't scale, and build blockchains with more throughput at the cost of more centralization (generally in the form of it being way harder to run a node), and then also point to Bitcoin as having low fees as a criticism.

The limiter it turns out, 16 years in, is not how many people *can* self-custody bitcoin. It's how many people *want* to.

Not everyone wants to deal with the technicalities of their own car, and not everyone wants to handle the technicalities of their own money. Quite few, in fact. It's always a subset for these types of things. People who are hardcore over their area of knowledge.

I leave my car details to pros down the street who I know the name of, and handle my money myself. There are those who handle their own cars but leave their money details to others.

Bitcoin currently processes about as many transactions per year as Fedwire, which handles $1 quadrillion worth of gross settlement volume per year for the US and for a good chunk of the world (in context, it's approximately 200 million $5 million average-sized transactions). That's actually a crazy stat. Bitcoin is casually this open-source global Fedwire with its own scarce units, and unlike Fedwire anyone can permissionlessly build on it or transact with it, for low fees despite it being a +$2T network. And if it gets clogged there are all sorts of permissionless layers above it with certain trade-offs.

Some people say paper bitcoin holders detract from the network. I say the opposite- their willingness to hold IOUs helps add to price stability and network size without clogging it. That leaves more room for cypherpunks to develop with, and work on. And those who finance them.

This has been foreseen as early as Hal Finney in 2010, when he wrote about bitcoin banks (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2500.msg34211#msg34211).

We live in a sweet spot by most metrics. A golden age. Historically, so few recognize it when they have it so good.

Bitcoin is big enough to be of interest to many, and yet is still niche enough in a global context to have low base-layer fees. Suitcoiners are happy to add to its scale, and yet cypherpunks can also build, and users can transact right on the base layer, and move to Lightning and Ark and BitVM and Liquid and any sort of trade-off they want if fees get high.

The real battle, though, is the ongoing government crackdown on privacy.

Bitcoin itself is in a pretty good technical place. It's a great tool. Certain conservative low-risk covenants might make it better, but even the existing design space is great and still expanding.

The US, Europe, and China cracking down on privacy is the threat. The headwind. And they're all expected. They're not surprising, but they're indeed fierce. That's the real battle- for the hearts and minds of people to embrace why privacy and permissionlessness are good traits.

In this ongoing funny contrast between podcasters and developers, that's the ideal role of podcasters- to spread the good news of what developers have built. To educate people. To tell them what's now possible thanks to developers. To articulate why cypherpunk values are good to a broad non-technical audience. That's where the overlap is. In overly-simplistic D&D terms, those with high CHA try to spread the work of those with high INT. It's not so much that "governments" are the problem. Governments often at least partially represent the people. If you convince a lot of people that privacy and sound money are good things, then you defang the problem. And you also challenge them legally in jurisdictions where it makes sense.

The technical foundation is good. The development of the past 16 years has been amazing, and it has brought us here. The scale has reached institutions, which is expected, not a threat. The actual threat is not treasury companies; it's anti-privacy regulations by governments. And more deeply that's a social issue, given how many people accept it. A vast amount of people believe privacy is only important for bad people who have something to hide. There's a ton of education work to do on it. Privacy is good. It's the default. But most people don't realize it when it comes to money.

We're winning. For 16 years ya'll have been amazing. But we'll need another 16 years more. More developers. More podcasters. All of it. We're a $2 trillion in market cap entering into a global fiat network of hundreds of trillions. And as their own institutions melt down from their own failures, their own top-heavy demographics and false promises, they will look for scapegoats. They will look toward those who are winning, and say they are the enemy.

When interviewers ask my price predictions, I tend to be conservative. That's mostly a liquidity assessment, and a rotation from OGs to new buyers. Price growth does take time.

But under that surface, I also have the benefit of being a general partner at among the largest bitcoin-only venture funds. I see what people are building, and I'm bullish. And for those who are working on stuff that doesn't align with profit, entities like the HRF and OpenSats are doing great work. Across all of the options, people are building great things.

I couldn't be more bullish on the ecosystem that's in place. All of you.

As someone who was once in the no kids camp in my early 20s and came full circle, I've put A LOT of thought into this topic. It’s by no means a complete perspective but my stream of consciousness rambling of how I view the journey from not wanting kids to being stoked about becoming a parent:

Step 1: Change your perspective

I'd go as far as to say bitcoin actually doesn't "fix" this issue as a whole. However, bitcoin is the starting point. All of us here on NOSTR already understand this so I won't get into details. The orange pill changed my perspective from nihilistic to optimistic about the future. This solves the economics of a family but this is just the foundation of the journey. You feel like you have the means and capital to support a family.

Step 2: Grow up and deal with your shit

This is the most important part and where most people get stuck. The underlying issue outside of money is the delaying of mental and emotional maturity in our society. Most "adults" in their 20s/30s who historically were the ones having multiple kids have been developmentally and emotionally stunted. 30 somethings with no kids are effectively like 16 years olds emotionally. There are rare exceptions who've consciously thought about this but I would argue most have not.

I was one of these mentally/emotionally immature people. It's easy to get caught in the trap of chasing the high velocity fiat lifestyle. My only focus was on myself and optimizing for my own hedonism. Drinking and hanging out with other unhealthy people enabled that lifestyle. Social circles become a feedback loop for better or worse. That keeps you trapped if you're not careful. Social media amplifies this 100x.

Bitcoin aided in my maturity process but there were other factors that have to be addressed. In most cases, it's unresolved issues from childhood. One cannot become an adult without accepting and coming to terms with childhood trauma (yes I know "trauma" is a loaded word but it's real and we all have some form of it. Read Paul Conti's book for more info).

The drawback of this work is that it comes at the expense of the ego. This is too hard for most people. They simply don't want to look in that mirror. The fear is too overpowering for the walls their ego has built up to protect the fragile sense of self. Fortunately for those people, we have constructed a society where you can numb any uncomfortable feeling immediately.

Modern technology has completely decimated our dopamine system. We're a world full of dopamine junkies. It's just not as in your face as a destitute addict on the street. Dopamine = motivation. Why would I want to have kids when I can just eat fast food and watch Netflix? That is the path of least resistance to fulfill our biological desires. But this is not real and will lead to the same hollowness that addiction never solves for. You're trying to fill a void. Real dopamine comes from doing hard things. Having kids is the hardest thing you can ever do in your entire life. You must be ready to bear that responsibility.

Step 3: Find the right partner

I can only speak from the male perspective but in conversations I've had with women it seems to be a two-way street. Society has created unhealthy people (see step 2) which translates to unhealthy relationships (see 50+% divorce rate). When you're not in a healthy relationship you can never honestly see your partner as the mother/father of your child. You can lie to yourself and stay in denial but deep down you feel it. In my experience I knew immediately when I found the right person. It's very primal and instinctual. Trust your instincts. It's not purely based on physical attraction, but once you have enough experience in the dating world, you begin to see things for what they are. You might have to burn your hand on the stove first though. Just a reminder that you are 50% of any relationship. This is not to put all the blame on one partner. There has to be mutual partnership.

Once you get to that point, the idea of having children becomes natural. It doesn't have the friction it once had in your brain. You think "I can't wait to become a parent" which sounds insane to a past version of yourself. While I don't have kids yet, I am on the path to. At the most fundamental biological level, we are here to reproduce. Society has separated us from the natural world so much that most people have lost touch with their bodies and the main purpose of why were here.

So to summarize, the change has to come from within. No amount of money or societal structure will fix that. It's going to take generations for us to undo all of the propaganda and brainwashing of the last hundred years. This unfortunately is our responsibility to bear. Because if we don't no-one else will. That is an existential threat to humanity we are programmed to avoid. We must be the adults (literally and figuratively) in the room and plant the seeds for our future generations.

1) Defeatist: I'll never meet the right girl or I can't afford a house so how can I afford kids
2) Denialism: Maintaining my freedom is a much better life than being tied down with kids

Whether it be adherence to a moral code, a habit, a person, religion or career, I have personally found that living a life full of commitments brings the most joy so I don't understand people subscribed to #2

My biggest commitment is to myself and giving up is something I'll never do, so I also don't understand #1 though I know why this is pervasive.

To each their own, but on a societal scale, I think this sentiment will lead to a generation of lonely old people. That is both sad and incredibly scary.

I think most of us here on nostr have had this existential crisis at one point or another. This is what separates curious people from non-curious people. When you get to the existential fork in the road, you can either accept you’re in the matrix, take the red (orange) pill, and see how deep the rabbit hole goes or you say this makes me uncomfortable give me the blue pill (which is actually blue light).

I’ve listened to Jack’s podcast with Danny Jones probably 5 or 6 times now and I’m just starting to internalize what he is saying.
