Hi friends!

Almost everything is ready for to finalize the move to my new account, @fabio@manganiello.online.

I pledged to take a longer break from social media after the recent incidents with the official instance, but I can't afford to take a long detox while there are still people in #Gaza who are joining the main instance, tagging me in desperate requests for help, and I can't even respond to them because of the limitations on my account on the main instance.

Those who take too long to understand the scale of crimes against humanity, who have been for too long more sensitive to the sense of comfort of the oppressors than the rights of the victims, should be called accountable by history. But they rarely are.

Eventually everyone will always have been against this, eventually trials will be held and everyone will have always criticized the criminals.

But we aren't there yet. And those who call the right things with the right name, and propose a deeper analysis of the roots of evil when sensitivities haven't adjusted yet, are always those who pay the highest price.

There's no price for being an early bird on the right side of history, because eventually everyone joins you.

Not the guys who blocked us just to keep lurking on our profiles and shamed us (and the victims from Gaza) on their timelines calling for blocks and defederation - behind our backs, without tagging us, and without even giving us a chance to respond.

Not the guys who kept throwing mud on Gaza Verified and called the victims scammers.

Not the guy who threatened to report me to my employer for antisemitism, and even left bad public comments about Booking saying "it employs a notorious antisemite like Fabio". And when I asked for the details of that account because I wanted to proceed through legal means for defamation (because those comments, even though deleted by now, caused my HR to ask me questions) then it's me throwing "legal threats".

These folks have not been limited (for _years_), but I have been limited.

Also, mentioning the Law of Return as a ground for colonialist expansion and calling Jews both at home and abroad to protest more, carrying both Israeli and Palestinian flags on the streets so they can't be accused of antisemitism, is a ground for limitation or suspension on the main instance.

They are basically staring at our finger while our finger is pointing at a genocide.

After reading this, and after reading their staff bragging about the support that they've given to Gaza Verified, I feel like these folks have lost any inch of leftover credibility they could have in my eyes.

They can punish you even for quoting Omer Bartov on the NYT or Bertrand Russell if that doesn't align with their sensitivities.

We are supposed to help the victims of an ongoing genocide, but not eradicate the ideological and political seeds that may lead to new occurrences of such acts of aggression.

mastodon.social is managed by morally bankrupt individuals who are accomplice in genocide and are actually obstructing humanitarian initiatives while bragging about them.

my issue isn't just about creating a new account or moving instances - I already run my profile on my self-hosted Akkoma in my utilities room :)

My issue goes deeper into how the platform is run.

I don't care much of m.s in itself, I already defederated it for a while last summer after it failed to take action multiple times towards threats and intimidation from ultra-Zionist accounts.

But I do care about the accounts from Gaza that are overwhelmingly registered to the main instance. Those folks aren't tech-savvy geeks like us - someone told them to install the Mastodon app and many don't even bother to check what an instance is (and why should they care, since they have much more pressing issues at hand), so they mostly end up on m.s

What m.s has done to me could be done to other profiles of donors or volunteers. And then those folks join m.s, they should for help, we may respond to them, but they may not even hear our responses - and give up on their last lifeline.

Even if I were to create a new account on my instance, or even spin up another domain, there's no guarantee that within a couple of days of exposure in these initiatives I start getting Fediblock spam again as soon as I criticize Israel, and then we're back at square one.

for as much as I (strongly) disagree with the way the main instance is managed and how transparent they are about their decisions, I feel like I must ask to hold on the horses before mass silencing/defederation.

The simple reason is that the vast majority of accounts from Gaza are currently registered on the main instance, and muting m.s means muting their voices too (or new voices that may come in and may not be heard if the instance is muted).

This is a very unfortunate case of Stockholm syndrome where the instance that persecutes the most outspoken critics of the genocide is also the one that hosts most of those victims...

My issue isn't much of finding a new instance - I'm self-hosted on an Akkoma server in my utilities room, I could simply create another account here or even spin up another domain.

My issue is with the sum of all the external pressures that have been applied - being limited on the main instance (on top of being already blocked by mastodon.art) is just the tip of the iceberg.

When too much pressure is applied you just need to take a break to heal and recover before thinking of the next steps.

I wish that was the case...the ugly truth is that m.s has 3M users, it's by far the largest player on the Fediverse, and people are unlikely to move out of there. I am planning to shut down this account and abandon social media for a while.

I have canceled myself to try to help as many as possible lately, and supported everyone against slanderous accusations directed at them.

That only ended up with my account being limited on mastodon.social with no notice and no explanation, while genocide denialist trolls and nasty people who tried to halt fundraising for Gaza are still allowed to act under a blanket of absolute impunity.

I can't even communicate effectively with new accounts in need from Gaza if my profile is hidden on the main instance.

And what baffles me is the lack of support I've received myself when it was my account to be targeted.

I'll keep cheering for Aral Balkan (npub1p09…m5vl) and Joy (npub1nv8…za59) from the sidelines, they're doing an amazing job, and I'll keep supporting accounts from Gaza, because it's the right thing to do.

Just not here, much more on the sidelines, and away from the spotlights.

I may be back one day, I don't know if on Nostr or some other platform that has already taken into account the fact that the admin of the largest instance of a defederated network can also be an asshole and can still have the power to cut you from your own network Eben if you run your own instance.

I want to silence this bullshit for good. I want a permalink to forward all the "Gaza Verified is a scam" folks to from now on. And this post can be that permalink.

If you don't believe the content posted by these accounts, their pictures that can't be found anywhere else on the Web, often still containing the immaculate EXIF headers from their phone cameras, or their videos where you can often hear loud sounds of drones, then you must at least trust the way the Internet works.

As someone who runs a couple of satellite websites for this initiative, I get visits from some of these accounts too. I firmly respect everybody's privacy - no trackers and no cookies, just plain nginx logs tossed away every 2 days. But if someone keeps making such slanderous claims around a humanitarian initative I also have the duty to provide solid evidence to prevent one the last lifelines to Gaza from being cut.

I'm only providing info about larger network subnets and operators info here in order to protect their privacy - `xxx` parts are obfuscated. But they are still significative enough to verify which operators run those networks.

Palnet and NewStarMax are the two main providers of network connectivity in Gaza.

Which means that those connections, without a doubt, came from Gaza.

Now, the only way to falsify this statement is by finding at least one commercial VPN provider that provides thousands of IP addresses from data centers in Gaza, from a dozen or so of different class B subnets.

Or maybe propose that all these connections are being routed by a bunch of Raspberry Pis running Wireguard that are still operating under the rubble.

Until someone can prove any of these statements, my position is clear: we've provided in these weeks all the (privacy-respecting) evidence we could against dozens of slanderous accounts who just shout "it's faaaaake" and run away.

Now the burden of proof lies squarely in the hands of these detractors.

If you folks don't apologize and give a word of comfort to people fighting for their survivals who you called scammers, then the whole world ought to know that you are acting in bad faith in the middle of an ongoing genocide with the purpose of cutting the few remaining humanitarian lifelines - and you should be called accountable for that.

I _always_ supported the peace talks.

A fair and durable peace isn't rocket science.

Hamas must go, Netanyahu must go, both must face their pending trials for war crimes, and free elections without them must be held both in Israel and Gaza.

Hamas must disarm, step away and release the hostages. In exchange, Israel must agree to the 1967 armistice borders, pull all the troops out of Gaza, contribute through war reparations to the reconstruction of everything it destroyed, agree to UN presence and a UN-controlled buffer zone to prevent any future invasions from either side (like it's been done in Cyprus), and entirely stop the the illegal settlement plans in the West Bank.

Do you agree with these simple statements?

Because last time something like this was accepted in March (except for the "Netanyahu must go" part) Ben-Gvir provoked a government crisis, stating that anything less than the full annexation of Gaza would end up with him pulling his support to the government. And Israel unilaterally broke the agreed ceasefire.

And just a couple of weeks ago, when another round of negotiations was supposed to be held in Doha, Israel sent two bombs on the diplomats awaiting them there instead of sending its representatives. On the territory of a foreign country that never provoked Israel militarily, btw.

Not to mention all the talks it boycotted in Cairo.

I despise Hamas. They must go and let a democratic Palestine arise, and let many residents cast their votes for the first time in their lives. But, to be fair, they have shown all the good faith and best intentions to stop this, and also accepted many concessions. the resilience and dignity of the Palestinian people is an example to the world.

Lately I've been trying to imagine how the average European would have reacted to only a fraction of that hardship.

I mean, my compatriots have protested vocally and blamed everyone they could when the government asked them to stay indoor during the peak of Covid. Our farmers also protested loudly for their right to pollute waterways with excessive nitrogen. And I've seen prostests against shops that stopped selling their favourite item.

I can't imagine how they would react if someone bombed their homes, displaced them for years, starved them and harassed them for so long.

From the height of their sense of self-entitlement, they would blame everyone, fight against one another on the basis of trivial disagreements on how to handle the situation, and expect the world to help them without blinking an eye.

But the Palestinian people are still united in their sorrow and their dignity, they haven't become as ugly as my compatriots have become for much less, and even when they are sleeping in tents or in the rubble under the bombs with nothing to eat some have still approach us with "I feel ashamed to ask for your support, but I think I really need help".

This is an example of humanity and dignitity during hardship that everyone should learn from.

It would surely reduce the push for competition and the burden on the donors, yes. And it may probably better for the verified accounts too, who then don't have to shout louder in order to get funding. If say every small family group needs $100/day to cover their basic needs then each donor could give $33/day (a perfectly reasonable sum), and that sum would only go to that family - as of now I'm spreading $10-15/day donations across >10 families instead, which I'm not sure if it's as impactful.

But a hybrid approach may probably still be valuable - the 3-donor-per-account approach could provide the baseline for each of those families to cover their basic needs, while still keeping the emergency funding as a backup for, well, emergencies, and also individual campaigns for anything on top of the basic survival needs.

I see the potential here, but also some potential challenges - Aral Balkan (npub1p09…m5vl) Joy (npub1nv8…za59) thoughts?

And, to be honest, I don't see a viable solution for it.

Many accounts write on social media regularly (and even tag donors) in order to get more attention on their personal campaigns. This may be more stressful on donors (who get tagged regularly during the day and have to spread their donations among multiple accounts), but it works better for some verified accounts (who can usually raise more money by simply asking for more help).

The alternative approach is the Emergency Appeal format, where all the money gets collected towards a single fund with a single objective (evacuate as many people as possible from the north). This is probably less cumbersome for donors (who can direct all their efforts towards a single bucket), but I've heard some accounts lament that it impacted their individual campaigns, because most of the efforts were going towards the emergency initiative, ending up with others receiving less money. And just because someone is not in the north anymore it doesn't mean that they're comfortable - most of them still live in tents, if they're lucky, and have one meal per day.

So it's extremely hard to make a ranking of misery, like you call it. But unfortunately we're in a situation where someone has to do it given the limited resources on both sides.

A more centralized approach, where all funds get collected in one place and dispatched to individual accounts based on their individual needs or level of danger, lifts some burden off the donors, but it puts more stress on the Gaza Verified operational staff (only Aral and Joy as of now) and it just shifts the problem of ranking the misery to them.

The current decentralized approach puts more stress on donors, who often (at least in my case) spread the efforts among 10 different families per day to maximize fairness, but it lifts burden from the Verified team (whose tasks can then be limited to onboarding and coordinating emergency communication) and it encourages individual accounts to share their stories in order to get more attention - but that creates competition for donations too.

The only way to improve things is to scale up, either the verification team (more people would mean more operational capacity to properly collect and dispatch donations like a proper non-profit), or the donors base (which for now unfortunately is limited to a couple of dozens of regular donors on the Fediverse). If that doesn't happen then people will necessarily have to compete for limited resources - and that means that somebody must do a very uncomfortable exercise of ranking the misery, or spread their efforts thin across all the accounts in order to maximize fairness...

Some verification calls have also been publicly shared by the authors on Vimeo.

Both me and Aral may do on-spot IP checks too - and most of the IPs I've seen are allocated to Palestinian subnets.

Aral can probably share something about his methodologies too if it's ok for him - it's always hard to strike a balance between sharing verification methodologies and providing potential scammers with a textbook on how to get rich.

I personally take closer looks to the media they upload too (you can tell a lot about someone from what they upload and how they upload it).

It's not like each of these methods is waterproof by itself. But the chances for something to be a false positive drastically decrease with the number of successful checkboxes that it ticks.

Which doesn't mean that there haven't been accounts that have been booted from the initiative. But they have been booted for misrepresenting their current situation - they were actually from Gaza, but had already moved to safety, usually Egypt, either before or after being verified, while claiming to be still in Gaza in order to boost their fundraising campaigns. But the chances of making gross mistakes and funneling money to thugs in Myanmar is probably close to zero.

I am happy to announce that the bulk of the work on the #Gaza Verified Archive at archive.gaza.onl has been completed.

No matter what admins do today or tomorrow with verified Palestinian accounts, their content is now permanently archived (in 3 different locations for now).

The UI is also ready, and I have added two "merged" timelines for posts and media containing all the content uploaded by all verified accounts - like a unique "Gaza" timeline.

I still feel a bit guilty for using a Vue SPA to build the frontend, but I've tried to redeem my sins as much as possible on the integrations side - the archive exposes a REST API, RSS feeds for all the endpoints, a static directory to browse uploaded media, and even the possibility to download the full db for static analysis.

The only major feature that is still missing is a periodic archive, which can be downloaded and used by other archivists to bootstrap their instance, but I'll work on that today.

Complete with all the evidence I could gather, invites to download the raw data from the archive and check themselves, an explanation of what happened with the Egyptian accounts (that they tried to manipulate out of context to conclude that the whole initiative is a scam) etc.

But I deleted it after reading your reply.

Those folks don't need rational explanations.

They don't even need data.

They have irredimably rotten minds and rotten hearts and all they can do is spit poison anyway.

All we can do is show a real video with a real human face suffering in the real world, and leave those anonymous folks to count shadows in pictures or share memes with Arafat covered in blood. People with a functioning brain and a functioning heart will hopefully understand themselves who's in the wrong.

A part of me thought that after seeing real people from Gaza on this platform they would have softened their stance to avoid public outrage.

As announced a couple of days ago, I am currently working on a service that periodically scrapes new public activity from [Gaza Verified](https://gaza-verified.org) accounts and creates a permanent local backup.

This is needed because we are not sure if some instance admins will keep being tolerant towards voices from #Palestine on their platforms (as confirmed by some recent incidents), and since their words and images are priceless first-hand reports of a #genocide that many are trying to hide and erase I think it's quite important to preserve them regardless of the pressure applied on individual instance admins.

The project is still a lot WIP, the scrapers and the cron are now working fine but a Web UI is still missing.

I have also registered https://archive.gaza.onl as an official public archive. Right now it's still a UI-less barebone thing running on `python -m http.server`, but it'll look better soon, I promise.

You can already download the full database of the accounts (including their profiles and their posts), as well as explore the media they uploaded under `/media`, indexed by username.

I also invite as many self-hosting enthusiasts as possible to run a copy of this service if possible. I don't want to be the single point of failure in historic preservation. The project is open-source and the source code is available [here](https://git.platypush.tech/blacklight/gaza-archive) under GPLv3 license.

Running it is as simple as a `docker compose up` in the repo root. It'll automatically populate the database and the media index under `./data`.

A lot more work is needed (like a nicer Web UI, indexing of hashtag and profile fields, and search features), but at least the first priority has now been checked (all the data is safe in at least one backup location).

After some brainstorming with Aral Balkan (npub1p09…m5vl), Joy (npub1nv8…za59) and a few accounts from Gaza Verified in these days, I have decided to set up an automated backup solution for all the content that verified accounts are uploading to the Fediverse.

What Palestinian accounts are uploading to the Fediverse is priceless. It's invaluable first-hand evidence of a genocide that many are trying to hide and erase. It's the kind of stuff that one day could be shown in a museum, or used as evidence against Israel in its pending international trials.

We must ensure that it is properly preserved.

We can't just assume that Fediverse admins will always be cooperative in keeping those accounts online (as the case of Mahmood From Gaza🍉🇵🇸 (npub1zlt…j7ht) proved yesterday). In Mahmoud's case the account was only hidden. But if sufficient external pressure is applied to instance admins there may be cases were accounts are just permanently deleted, without even getting a chance to download a backup of their data, and without means to neatly migrate their profiles and followers to another instance.

Our duty towards history preservation imposes us not to lose this content.

Tonight I will start working on a solution that will periodically scrape their feeds and automatically archive any new content (post, attachment or follower) to my S3 bucket (a self-hosted MinIO instance in my house).

What I need is:

- If possible, explicit permissions from the Gaza Verified accounts for me to create a permanent record of their online activities

- Permissions from instance admins to run these scrapers on profiles on their instances (except for mastodon.social's case, where the staff rarely responds and there's already a lot of scraping activity anyway, so in their case I can afford to feel better sorry than safe)

I was also thinking today that it could be a good idea to automatically backup all public posts and media material posted by accounts in Gaza to (at least one) backup locations.

So far even the main instance has been quite collaborative in giving them a space, but there's no guarantee that it'll always be the case. If external pressures arise (especially on the main instance) to silence the voices from Gaza then those accounts may be suspended with no appeal or chance of migration, and/or their content could be permanently deleted. It'd be a huge loss for the world. If there's enough interest (and it's ok with the policies of the host instances around automated scraping, and of course with the authors of the content) I can script together a quick bot that subscribes to their feeds and backups all of their content to a safe location.

I'm not sure if everyone here got the perspective.

Some back-of-the-envelope math tells me that an average emergency room in NYC sees about 250-400 patients per day. It has access to the best medical devices in the world, and a trained, well-paid and well-fed workforce that can operate in conditions of peace.

You guys are dealing with more patients per day than the average NYC E/R. Patients that have much more severe trauma than the average one that visits a hospital in NYC. And you're doing all of this while being underpaid, underfed, and with bombs dropping on your own hospital.

These are truly the kind of stories that they should make movies about.

Since we are very unlikely to see that amount of RAM any time soon in our machines, that means that most of that address space is unused.

Most modern architectures only use 48 bits for virtual addresses.

And of course when you leave unused resources C developers get creative.

You can virtually stuff anything into the remaining bits, as long as you remember to reset them to the original value before dereferencing the pointer.

Chrome's engine uses pointer stuffing to tag the type of a variable, for example.

And the red-black tree implementation in the Linux kernel also adopts this approach.

The problem is deeper and more outraging: no matter the law, the legal bodies, international institutions and popular support, if the US and Israel decide to ignore everyone and do things their way they got a special waiver to do that with complete impunity.

If they decide that Gaza should be a 5-star Israeli resort area with a Trump tower, apparently they can just do it.

If even the most authoritative international body (the UN) condemns them, they can just call them "a bunch of antisemitic terrorists", even slam sanctions against UN diplomats and lawyers, and just do things their way.

I thought that European pressures would have been enough to bend Netanyahu, since one third of their trade is made with us. Capitalism is not an all-encompassing system that forbids experimentation with alternatives until it is successfully overthrown.

Instead, societies are hybrids, frequently containing non-capitalist elements — cooperatives, public institutions, solidaristic welfare systems — even under capitalism.

The more solidaristic elements of Nordic economies are like shards of socialism within capitalism that don't involve a proletarian revolution. They encapsulate the societal components that are either unprofitable or unethical to be run in a market, and allocate for them non-capitalist islands.

Democratic socialist reforms are not simply “within” the system; they are the means by which non-capitalist modes of production expand, colonize new spaces, and gradually transform society.

Just as capitalism emerged from the nooks and cracks of feudal societies, socialism too may arise through experimentation and the accumulation of democratic alternatives, continually building up the social forces dedicated to their defense and expansion, until a tipping point is reached.

Even though Dragsted doesn't seem to mention him explicitly, this is actually one of the best modern interpretation I have read of Gramsci's ideas. The cultural hegemony of capitalism ("there's no alternative", like Thatcher used to say) is overthrown once viable alternatives succeed. It's a war of position rather than Marx' war of maneuver (which has rarely succeeded in producing stable or democratic forms of socialism). And it doesn't necessarily mean that different economic systems can't coexist to manage the things that each can manage better - pragmatism over ideology.

The difficulty however is that within capitalism private investment remains the goose that lays the golden eggs.

So long as capital retains control over the investment function, any expansion of solidaristic or non-capitalist spheres runs the risk of rollback when profitability is threatened.

The strategic question, then, is how to socialize investment itself — how to bring democratic control over the allocation of capital — so that the gains are not just fragile enclaves but the basis for a durable transition.

Dragsted proposes a program consisting of cooperative rights, wage-earner funds, social wealth funds, municipal socialism, democratization of finance, and socialized land and housing.

While Sanders instead proposes that large firms would gradually transfer shares into worker-controlled funds, granting workers both dividends and collective say - something that builds on top of Germany's way of shared ownership.

And any future socialist alternative needs to also learn from the mistakes of the Russian and Chinese productive models. Social ownership is boosted to encourage a process that sets priorities through democratic bottom-up deliberation. Not to create new hierarchies that set priorities through ineffective top-down instructions on every detail of production.

Except for the conclusion.

You see an APK compatibility layer as an undeserved contribution to the Android ecosystem.

I see it as a lesson of E-E-E ripped from their own playbook instead.

When you lay in bed with those companies by building stuff together with them (like the Linux kernel and many of Apache's products have been doing for a while), or by letting them fork your solution for profit, then you're exposing yourself to E-E-E.

But that's not the case when you reverse engineering _their own_ implementations to make them work in _your own_ ecosystem. Then the opposite happens. Then it's _you_ benefiting from the large-scale distribution platforms that they've built in order to erode their market share, even if by a tiny bit.

Take WINE as a comparison. It didn't really benefit Microsoft. A Windows emulation layer running on Linux wasn't really aligned with their priorities. When Microsoft embarked into their own E-E-E hostile act against Linux (WSL) it's not like they could reuse much of the work done in the other direction by WINE. But it definitely eroded their market. Over time games we went from "games can only run on Windows" to "most of the Windows games run fine also on Linux". Products like Steam embraced this shift, solutions like Proton flourished, and over time many gamers moved to Linux. They would have never done the move if you had told them "you wanna play GTA on Linux? why don't you just shut up and play [xbill](http://www.xbill.org/) instead?", and companies like Steam would have just invested in yet another Windows-based handheld instead of Arch Linux. Not only, but all those that for the past 25 years have been repeating "but can I use Photoshop on Linux?" now they can get a resounding YES as an answer, rather than a "why don't you learn to use GIMP instead?"

I see a very close parallel with APKs. Why would Google benefit in any way by us emulating their patched kernel, their JVM and their Play Services on a geeky Linux distro? It's not like they're going to drop the OS that they've invested the past two decades in building for something that looks like PostmarketOS or UBPorts. If they really wanted to change their OS, they'd probably move away from the Linux kernel entirely - as proven both by the (now defunct?) Fuchsia project, and by their more recent move away from their SuSE-based ChromeOS on Chromebooks and towards Android.

A solution that allows you to run APKs with Google Play Services on top of Debian or Arch would literally have zero added value for them - and, instead, they'd be more likely to fight it and consider it as a leak to a potential competitor in their increasingly sealed ecosystem.

We, on the other hand, have everything to gain from such a move.

When folks ask us "but can I use my banking app/my workplace/school app/TikTok/Netflix/WhatsApp on your device?", we could resoundly tell them YES YOU CAN! - just like our gamer or Photoshop enthusiast friend.

Plus, I want people to embrace Linux as their main driver. And that's been the problem with Linux on mobile for way too long. I have a bunch of phones with PostmarketOS, UBPorts, Maemo (still working on a Nokia 770 almost 20 years later), and even Arch (on an N900). Can I play a video on them? Sure. Can I cast it to my TV? No. Can I play popular games? No. Can I chat with my son's teachers? No. Can I use my banking app to send money to a friend? No. And the list goes on.

After too many no's to too many features considered basic in today's usage patterns, you'll just lose people's attention. And even the most enthusiastic user may try their best to run it as a primary driver, but still go around with an Android phone for everything that it can't do. So if the goal is to liberate people (not only the ultra-geek who's likely to make a lot more compromises) from the need of running a proprietary solution then we aren't making much progress towards it.

I've been chasing myself the dream of Linux apps supremacy for years. And it took me a while to realize that it was a lost cause.

This isn't a technical debate about the intrinsic superiority of native Linux apps (and open package managers) over Java classes stuffed in zip files signed and distributed by Google.

It's about which way of doing things has the backing of more developers, wider distribution channels, devices and operating systems already compatible with them, and millions of apps already used by billions. This isn't a battle we can win - at least not by dismissing the APKs entirely.

Of course I wish that the world had gone differently, I wish that Nokia and Maemo/MeeGo had succeeded and we would all be using Debian-baed mobile devices today, but unfortunately that's not how things went.

If you don't provide a device or OS that can run someone's banking app, government ID app, favourite social media app, or messenger, or streaming app, or game, then nobody will use your device or your OS. The longer it takes us to acknowledge that it must be us chasing the habits that users have built over the past two decades rather than the other way around, the lower chances of success a Linux phone will have.

Once users are in your environment you can start shoveling them Flatpak, pacman, apt or whatever, sure. But if you start shoveling them Linux apps directly, and you just dismiss them for wanting to use a banking app or an app to communicate with their kid's teachers, then you're unlikely to gain much traction.

For many it's the only way to improve their conditions - or get a ticket out of bad situations.

Ukraine has also a high rate of tertiary education enrollment for example, despite its challenges.

Palestine is a treasure of talents that didn't have their chance to bloom the way they deserved - and they are even less likely to be given a chance if forced to live like this.

Many of you only had a fraction of the opportunities that even the most unlucky EU student gets, and yet you and your people managed to achieve so much with so little support. You should be admired for this.

And what's most enraging is that we in Europe desperately need young talent too.

Our societies are ageing, birth rates are plummeting, and Southern and Eastern European countries have been drained of young talent that has migrated to the West/North.

We desperately need young smart people with fresh ideas and diverse backgrounds.

Yet not only we (or, better, our institutions) aren't vocal enough against those who prevent talent from flourishing and expressing their full potential in their own lands.

But we also shut the doors when the situation gets tragic enough to push those people at our doors. And that just to please increasingly older and cynical electorates who don't care of their own songs and grandsons. Or those left behind by broken economic and political systems who fear that any outsider would replace them.

In the end, it's a game where everyone loses.

Young people can't bloom the way they deserve in their lands because of rotten century-old colonial interests pursued by people who could be their grandparents or great-grandparents.

And they can't move out either because Western ruling classes are too scared to lose votes if they show any mercy to anyone who isn't their most spoiled, racist and cynical base.

And our own countries lose out by literally shutting the doors to young and talented people that our societies depserately need.

We have plenty of capital, but we're running out of ideas and young talent. Palestinians have plenty of ideas and young talent, but they don't have capital to fullfil those ideas.

Even if one wouldn't want to consider the humanitarian aspect for some reason, it would still be an unmatched demand-supply problem begging to be solved.

It would be in our interests to open our doors and our hearts and support you people like you deserve to be supported.

Yet here we are, stuck in a lose-lose situation that benefits nobody - except for those who actually benefit from exploitation.
