I think you can understand this, because a similar question could be asked about your ditto.pub cloned client. No one needs your client, but it's likely fun to mess around with it and learn. And it's great that you're doing what you're doing with your project too whether someone needs it or not. If someone wants to use it, they can. If they do not, they can just ignore it and that's fine too. It's all good.

Did you know there is a Nostrcoin live, on Nostr, right now? There is. It's live, working, and you can anonymously get NSTC coins right now from the "faucet".

Although Nostrcoin is running, there is only one node running. We need more nodes. We need to decentralize.

My challenge

If you have a small bit of spare VPS space, would you consider running an indexer node? Or, better, if you have an OpenClaw agent running, maybe that agent could run a Nostrcoin indexer node. That would be amazing. This is my challenge to you: get your agent running a Nostrcoin node.

What is this?

Nostrcoin is a fun, experimental cryptocurrency built directly on Nostr—no blockchain, just public Nostr events as the ledger. It demonstrates proof-of-work mining (via event IDs with 4 leading zeros), transfers, halving rewards, and decentralized validation, all with zero real monetary value. The network stays healthy and decentralized through independent indexer nodes that:

Listen to Nostr relays for mining (kind 30333) and transfer (kind 30334) events
Validate everything using the open-source library
Store history in SQLite for quick access
Provide a simple REST API for balances, history, stats, and peer syncing
More always-on nodes mean better resilience, faster data for wallets/explorers, reduced single points of failure, and true permissionless operation.

I would especially love to see #openclaw agents take this on.

Openclaw's autonomous, collaborative setup aligns perfectly with Nostrcoin's Nostr-native, decentralized spirit. Indexers are lightweight (Node.js + SQLite, low CPU/RAM usage), so they run easily alongside a claw instance with little to no disruption—at least based on current patterns. This could evolve into agents that auto-validate, monitor epochs, sync peers, or even automate mining/relaying in creative ways. It's a natural fit for openclaw to "take the horns" and help grow the experiment.
Running a node is low-effort, educational, and directly supports the project's goal of showing what's possible on Nostr. The more geographically distributed nodes we have, the stronger the network becomes.

A small VPS is ideal for 24/7 uptime. Consider LNVPS (lnvps.net)—it's particularly Nostr-friendly: no KYC, pay via Bitcoin Lightning Network, accounts tied to Nostr (notifications via DMs), Tor-friendly, and their stack is open-source with API access. Other solid options include DigitalOcean, Vultr, or Hetzner for $5–10/month.

Prep the server (Ubuntu/Debian example)

Keep it running with PM2 (recommended for auto-restart & boot persistence; alternatively, use tmux)

Go public

This is what is needed to truly be decentralized.

Open port 3000 (firewall + VPS security group): sudo ufw allow 3000
Share your indexer URL (e.g., http://your-ip:3000) on the forum (can be anonymous), Nostr (use #nostrcoin), or GitHub issues.
Add peers to your config; encourage others to add yours.

That's it—your node is contributing to validation, API availability, and decentralization. If you're on openclaw, experiment with pointing agents at the local or public API endpoints (/balance/:pubkey, /stats, etc.) for automated monitoring or fun extensions.

2. How It Works (Plain English)

2.1 The Big Picture

Imagine a public ledger (like a shared spreadsheet) where everyone can see all transactions, but no one person controls it. That's essentially what Nostrcoin is.

Instead of a traditional blockchain, Nostrcoin uses something called "Nostr events" - these are just messages that get shared across the internet. Every time someone mines NSTC or sends it to someone else, they create one of these messages.

2.2 Mining: Earning NSTC

Think of mining like a lottery that happens every 10 minutes:

Every 10 minutes is a new "round" (we call this an "epoch")

During those 10 minutes, miners try to solve a math puzzle

The puzzle: Find a random number that, when combined with your mining attempt, produces a special code starting with four zeros (like "0000abc123...")

First person to solve it wins 50 NSTC (this reward gets cut in half every few years, just like Bitcoin)

Everyone can verify the winner actually solved the puzzle correctly

It's like a race where you keep rolling dice trying to get four zeros in a row. Your computer can try thousands of combinations per second, but it still takes luck and computing power.

2.3 Sending NSTC: Making Transfers

Sending NSTC is simpler than mining:

You create a message saying "I'm sending 5 NSTC to Bob"

You sign it with your private key (like a digital signature)

You broadcast it to Nostr relays (these are servers that spread messages around)

Indexers validate it by checking you actually have 5 NSTC to send

If it's valid, everyone's copy of the ledger gets updated

The smallest amount you can send is 1 nok (0.00000001 NSTC) - like sending a penny, but way smaller.

2.4 How Balances Work

Your balance isn't stored in one place. Instead, it's calculated by looking at your complete history:

Example:
You start with: 0 NSTC
+ You mined a block: +50 NSTC
+ You mined another block: +50 NSTC
- You sent to Alice: -25 NSTC
+ You received from Bob: +10 NSTC
= Your balance: 85 NSTC
Anyone can calculate this by looking at all the public messages. That's why you don't need to trust anyone - you can verify it yourself.

2.5 What Makes It Decentralized?

No CEO, no company, no servers we control: - Anyone can run an "indexer" (a program that tracks all the messages) - Anyone can mine - Anyone can send and receive - No one can stop you or censor transactions - No one can change the rules without everyone agreeing

Think of it like email: - Multiple email providers exist (Gmail, Outlook, ProtonMail) - They all work together even though no one company controls email - You can switch providers but keep your address - Nostrcoin works the same way - multiple indexers, all independent, all in sync

2.6 What Are "Indexers" and Why Do They Matter?

An indexer is just a computer program that: 1. Listens to Nostr relays for Nostrcoin messages 2. Validates each message (checks if mining was done correctly, if someone has enough balance to send, etc.) 3. Keeps a database of everyone's balance 4. Provides a website/API so wallets can check balances

Important: Indexers don't control anything. They're like accountants - they can't change the numbers, they just keep track. If an indexer lies, you can check other indexers or run your own.

2.7 Why Nostr Instead of a Blockchain?

Traditional cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin require everyone to download and store the entire history (hundreds of gigabytes). With Nostrcoin: - Messages are stored on existing Nostr relays - You don't need to download everything to participate - Indexers do the heavy lifting of tracking balances - But you can still verify everything if you want to

It's like the difference between downloading every email ever sent vs. just checking your inbox when you need to.

2.8 Real-World Analogy

One thing nice about the low difficulty (4) is that mining NSTC can be done on even the oldest of old laptops. This one garnered only about 220 h/s. It mined a block number 29 after about 30,000 attempts using the Nostrcoin wallet miner: https://saccoci.github.io/wallet
