The hurdy-gurdy is a string instrument that produces sound by means of a hand-cranked rosined wheel which rubs against the strings. The wheel functions much like a violin (or nyckelharpa) bow, and single notes played on the instrument sound similar to those of a violin. Melodies are played on a keyboard that presses tangents—small wedges, typically made of wood or metal—against one or more of the strings to change their pitch. What should alarm anyone who understands statecraft is the normalization of recklessness. Guardrails have been stripped away. Federal authority has been expanded without accountability. Classified systems and intelligence capabilities are being handled casually, opened to private actors with no constitutional obligation, no institutional discipline, and no strategic restraint. The cost will not be measured in appropriations or market corrections. It will be measured in compromised sources, degraded intelligence, and lives lost years from now because trust was mistaken for something that could be replenished.

As a veteran and former intelligence professional, I do not fear America becoming weak. I fear America becoming ordinary. One power among many. No longer the center of gravity. No longer trusted to lead without coercion. The world will move on not out of hostility, but out of necessity. History is unforgiving to nations that confuse dominance with legitimacy.

All of this was done knowingly. Not to strengthen the republic. Not to protect Americans. Not to preserve the order built on sacrifice and restraint. It was done to protect a racist murderous p*dophile and his racist murderous p*dophile friends.

We know students (including people like your nurses and doctors and future politicians) are passing courses based entirely on AI and very few schools have admin that are willing to risk retention issues and lawsuits to hold students accountable without irrefutable proof. And even the ones that try are only treading water. Most people don't say it out loud, but we''re screwed.

I suspect that when we look back, this time in history will be some type of tipping point for some type of major change in how we understand education. But your guess is as good as mine what that will look like.

"Size" is ambiguous, so let's say it weighs 1000x as much. Mega-dragonfly isn't any denser than normal dragonfly, so 1000x the volume, also. 1000x is convenient, because it's a cubic number: 1000=1e3. So every dimension is 10x as large. Instead of 6 inch wingspan, 60 inches (5 feet). A dragonfly 1000x the normal size would weigh something like 5 pounds -- more than most hawks.

Wing area is an area -- a square number. So making the dragonfly 10x larger in each dimension makes the wings 100x larger in area. But they have to carry 1000x more weight. 10x more weight loaded per area of wing. Could a regular dragonfly carry around 9 others? I don't think so. It would not be able to fly.

Strength is a material property -- you can only make muscles stronger by making them thicker. Like the wings, the muscles and exoskeleton have cross-sectional area that has only increased 100x and have to carry 1000x the weight. That's 10x the structural load. Ants famously can carry very large objects relative to their body size, but this is because they're tiny, and have lots of material strength left over. Scale up to 1000x, and that reserve strength is all depleted. A mega-dragonfly's legs will probably collapse under its own weight.

The biggest problem for any mega-insect, though, is going to be respiration. Insects don't have lungs or complex circulatory systems. They rely on openings in their skin to allow gas exchange, and diffusion to spread oxygen to their muscles. If the dragonfly is 10x as large in every dimension, those crude functions will break down. There's no way enough oxygen is passively diffusing over that much volume. It would suffocate immediately.

The dark tarnish on your silver is made of a different substance called silver sulfide. When you put the silver in the hot water with the aluminum foil and a dash of baking soda, you create a tiny, safe electrical circuit. This "circuit" causes the sulfur that made the tarnish to jump off the silver and stick onto the aluminum foil instead. TIFU by not realizing I was dating my girlfriend

I (22F) have apparently been dating my best friend (also 22F) for four months now. Without knowing.

Our entire friend group knew, she was introducing people to me as her girlfriend, rightfully so. The whole time I just thought we were extremely close best friends.

I was talking with another one of our friends earlier, and I brought up my girlfriend, who I will call Mina. I said that I love how close we are, and just talked about how much I love our friendship. My friend literally froze, I knew I had said something wrong, I just didn't know what. She quickly left the room to, I assume, text our friend group.

I get a call from Mina about five minutes later, asking me about what I was talking about. So I told her, I love our friendship, and I love how affectionate we were able to be without it being weird. She went silent, and then said she would be over soon.

Skip to her showing up, and she sits down next to me, and breaks the news to me that we have been dating for four months. I was so confused, and she broke it down for me.

She asked me about anytime she kissed me. I though they were just friendly kisses. On the cheeks, forehead, side of the head, on the shoulder if she passed me in the kitchen. Hell, even the lips! But I still thought everything was just platonic! We never made out, though, it was just pecks.

Anytime we went out for a date? I thought we were going out as just friends! Even the really romantic dinners. I was just under the impression we were great friends.

The pet names? Friendly! People use pet names platonically all the time!

I bet the big question is, what about the day she asked you to make it official? This is the most embarrassing part. She asked me if I wanted to go out with her. I said yes. However, we were in a cafe. I thought she meant if I wanted to physically go out of the cafe with her. I'm not kidding.

We talked everything out, and even though Mina looked like she was about to have an aneurysm, she was really calm with me. Anyway! We are now officially (actually) dating! I do actually love her and like her romantically, even if it took me being dumb to realize it, lol

TLDR: I mistook all my girlfriends romantic gestures for platonic ones, not realizing we were, in fact, dating
