Sure, a lot of tech people in the developed world can afford this. But I suspect this is one of the major barriers to entry into the #Fediverse for people in developing countries

The Fediverse is far more centered on the developed world than #Twitter or #Facebook were. And that lack of representation from developing countries hurts us.

The revolution needs to go global if it is to succeed.

I just had a Thought. Obviously, we can't simply pass a law banning #X specifically from operating in the #EuropeanUnion . It would set a terrible precedent, likely wouldn't pass the courts, and wouldn't be very effective since X could just rebrand itself or something.

But we _could_ introduce, say, the "Social Media Transparency Act" which would require all social media systems operating in the European Union to either use a strict timeline, _or_ publish the precise algorithm they use to show content to their users. And if there are any variables specific to the user, their profile, their region and so forth, then users must be able to request the values of these parameters as they apply to them at any time.

And if any social media companies in the European unions do not comply... well _then_ we can fine and/or ban them!

Does this sound like a plan?

Beyond the lack of surprise, we should also note that this lack of action is something that got quite a few #Fediiverse instance defederated. While Bluesky itself is obviously not an ActivityPub-based system, we _can_ connect to them via services such as brid.gy. But should we?

Obviously, everyone needs to decide what they are comfortable with, and what they consider to be vital for the safety of themselves and others on their instance. A domain block of bsky.brid.gy is entirely understandable and reasonable under these circumstances. But what about those who use it to connect to Bluesky?

Personally, while I will not open up an account on Bluesky itself, I do use brid.gy and will continue to do so. I think it is important to show the world - including Bluesky - that we on the Fediverse are out there, are active, and worth following. And if some Bluesky readers realize that interacting with me and others around here will be much more comfortable if they also open up an account on the Fediverse, then so much the better.

However, I am also responsible for any posts I _share_ from Bluesky, just as I am responsible for anything else I post. I have absolutely no intention of sharing (say) pro-TERF propaganda, for instance - but anyone who shares content from Bluesky that is actively harmful to others deserves to be reported and blocked or banned if appropriate.

In German #folklore, a lot of folk tales qualify as "revenge fantasy". The peasant storytellers knew perfectly well that many evil nobles, rich merchants, or other authorities would never have to face justice in this world - and thus they invented tales about how the Devil appeared and viciously punished them for their misdeeds.

And given all the debates about #UnitedHealthcare and #LuigiMangione , I must say that I am seeing these tale in a new light. In our age, too, great villains are rising to the top of nations and businesses and we know, deep down, that they will never face justice for their misdeeds - no matter how much we wish for it. Thus, revenge fantasies about such villains are only to be expected.

On the other hand, the "Decentralized" image fits #Bluesky better than the #Fediverse, since Bluesky distinguishes between local "Personal Data Servers" and large-scale hubs - the "Relays" - while the Fediverse makes no such distinction.

From the "Witchcraft Panics" of early modern Europe to the "Satanic Panic" of the 1980s to the modern anti-trans panic and TERF movement - I could use some good scholarly analysis of their psychology and how they propagate.

I eventually want to write a book about witch tales from German folklore, and it may be useful to compare the witchcraft panics of the past with more modern variants - so that I can show that while the context changes, the basic phenomenon is still with us.

- Should make an honest effort to keep up with the latest software updates.
- Be friendly to writers (since my main focus will be on folklore writing)
- No known major problems with the moderation of the admins.
- A character limit of at least 2000 (you can check it via the api, by adding /api/v1/instance to the instance name)

I have evaluated and discarded:

- pagan.plus (limits mastodon.social - understandable, but since I am a self-published author who wants reach it's not ideal for me)
- c.im (geoblocks entire countries, which I am not a fan of)
- infosec.exchange (seems to be for people who are primarily interested in IT Security topics, which doesn't fit my profile)

You see, whenever Nazis at any level of the German government did something shitty, a lot of Germans who followed them refused to believe that high Nazi leadership was in any way responsible, and insisted that if Adolf Hitler himself knew of this, he would immediately put a stop to it - up to and including the deportation of the Jews. Hence their exclamation:

"If only the Führer knew about this!"

And in the years to come, I believe you will hear a similar phrase from many of those who voted for Trump whenever the Trump government does something shitty:

"If only Trump knew about this!"
