As both a builder and someone with extensive interaction with a large property management company, I would honestly bet that 50% of rentals have significant mold somewhere in the house. Almost nobody remediates mold properly because it is extremely hard and expensive. Big developers are especially bad. This is also a huge reason for my choosing to live in a yurt. Besides mold, most building materials are made with a significant amount of glue and high-VOC products that offgas for years. Modern houses can be really toxic. Not all of them are, but I think this is one of the most unaddressed issues in housing, and a huge reason to consider vernacular traditional housing options. <br/><br/>Pro tip: if you think you might be suffering from mold-related health problems, many don&#39;t know that you can hire an environmental scientist to come and lab test the spore counts in your house. Yeah the cold would be tough in a yurt for a real long period of time for sure. It is possible though. I know some people who survive Canadian winters in them and they were popularized in the Mongolian steps where it is wicked cold. You have to keep the fireplace going 24/7 and you hit the nail on the head with water management. The actual toughest part of winter in my opinion. We are in TN so winters are pretty mild. We usually only have two or three weeks of truly cold temps when we get arctic blasts every year. We love being in deep, remote locations. This pretty much ruled out a tiny house and 99% of RVs. They are too heavy. The heaviest part of this yurt is the frame. It&#39;s probably 150 or 200 lbs. I could literally trek this thing somewhere on foot if I needed to (it would take several trips, of course), but it&#39;s certainly feasible. We have portable decks, so everything can be deployed in about a day and a half. There were two other deciding factors for us: the natural, timeless beauty and the serviceability is excellent. Extreme low-maintenance structures that are easy to repair. It&#39;s mostly wood, wool, and a small amount of steel. Incredible structures but not all yurts are equal. They have to be carefully designed to avoid mold and critters if you are in North America. There are also important safety items, for example, a lightning rod.
