I recommend getting out of the Apple ecosystem as well. Apple strictly censors what's allowed on their phones and extracts a heavy tax on developers. Most of their hardware (laptops / phones) are also very user hostile (difficult to repair or upgrade).

GrapheneOS and Motorola are collaborating on a phone designed for GrapheneOS. I recommend switching to that when it comes out in the next year or so.

Huemer argues that political authority is an illusion. Starting from common moral intutions (don't steal, don't hurt people), he demonstrates that no one has the right to rule and no one is obliged to obey a government merely because it issues commands.

The state possesses no special moral status that justifies coercion or obedience, and that common moral intuitions against private coercion (like theft or kidnapping) should apply equally to the state.

He dismantles major theories of political authority, such as social contract theory, hypothetical consent, democratic majoritarianism, and consequentialist argument.

Building Onyx: Why I'm Creating an Open Source Alternative to Big Tech's AI Productivity Tools

Hello all!

I started a new career path at the beginning of this year and immediately felt the need for an AI-powered productivity tool to help manage my daily workflow—an executive assistant of sorts for task management, scheduling and meeting reminders, content writing and social management, general prioritization, and project management.

I had recently started using Obsidian to organize all my notes, so my initial thought was to throw Claude Code at my Obsidian vault and see what would happen. The results were amazing, but I knew I could do better. I started creating skill after skill, refining my workflow with each iteration. I integrated open source tools like Taskwarrior, Khal, and Khard. I pulled down all of my tasks, issues, and merge requests from GitHub and GitLab. The system was becoming genuinely powerful.

Then, in the first week of January, I discovered OpenCode and everything changed.

I decided to build an OpenCode plugin for Obsidian. Being able to accomplish all of this without switching between applications was incredibly productive and powerful. I showed it to a few friends and they were floored. We discussed it at length, and that's when I had my realization: this was the future. This was AI for non-technical people. My friends don't code, but they could all benefit from personal assistants and productivity suites.

But I had doubts. My very technical, command-line-based, Obsidian-centric approach wasn't going to work for most people. And as I dug deeper, I realized I wanted to be truly open source—and Obsidian isn't. I wanted a polished interface for syncing. I wanted a free (or at least cost-effective) and simple method for synchronization that non-technical users could actually set up and use.

I started working on a solution. Then, two days later, Anthropic announced Claude Cowork.

And that's when it truly hit me.

This was the billion-dollar idea—and every major tech company would be racing to implement their own version. They would mine user data and lock users into their platforms. This would be terrible for user choice and freedom. We needed an open source alternative, and we needed it fast.

(And then I had to disappear for a week due to work commitments, but my team did win $25K in an AI Hackathon, so it's not all bad.)

Now that I'm done with the backstory, let's get to the app.

Introducing Onyx

Onyx is a private, encrypted note-taking app with Nostr sync.

Onyx lets you write markdown notes locally and sync them securely across devices using the Nostr protocol. Your notes are encrypted with your Nostr keys before being published to relays, ensuring only you can read them.

This is the foundation of what I'm building—a truly open, user-controlled productivity platform where your data belongs to you and syncs through decentralized infrastructure rather than corporate servers.

How Sync Works

Onyx uses custom Nostr event kinds for encrypted file sync:

All synced content is encrypted using NIP-44 with a conversation key derived from your own public/private key pair. This means only you can decrypt your notes—relays only see encrypted blobs.

Shared documents are encrypted to the recipient's public key, so only they can decrypt them.

Poor people don't read books. That is one major reason why they stay poor.

I have a house full of paper books, but you really would need a mansion with a large library, to fit in many more. Most are rotting away in the basement or in boxes in the closet. I do the middle-class thing and go to the library, but they are also space-limited, so some books I like borrowing eventually get taken out of the shelves.

E-books are much better, as you can have as many as you have digital storage space, but I didn't want anyone to change them from underneath me, so I went online and built software that keeps books on relays and allows every part of them to be cryptographically signed and the changes tracked. Which solves that problem.

And then, anyone with a cell phone can have access to any book I also have access to, since the relay is public. This was better, then going offline, with my paper edition of Frankenstein, and sneering at the commoners who can't afford to buy 500000 paper books.

How to turn a secure operating system into a digital bunker

You have de-Googled your phone. You have installed GrapheneOS.

That is a victory. But out of the box, even GrapheneOS makes trade-offs between usability and maximum security.

To truly rely on a device in a hostile environment, you need to configure it.

We are not just changing settings. We are reducing the attack surface.

Here are five critical configurations to turn your phone into a hardened node.

────────────────

Boot Automatic: Auto Reboot

The Concept When your phone is turned on and unlocked at least once (After First Unlock state), encryption keys are held in memory. If a sophisticated adversary seizes your phone in this state, they have a larger window to attempt exploitation or data extraction.

When the phone reboots, it enters "Before First Unlock" (BFU) state. The keys are evicted from memory. The device is encrypted at rest. It is effectively a brick.

The Configuration GrapheneOS allows you to automate this. After a set period without a successful unlock, it forces a reboot.

Path: Settings → Security & privacy → Exploit protection → Auto reboot

Recommendation: Set this to 12 hours or less. (Default is 18 hours; configurable down to 10 minutes depending on your threat model).

The Nuclear Option: Duress PIN/Password

The Concept Encryption protects you from mathematics. It does not protect you from a wrench.

If you are forced to unlock your phone under threat of violence or at a border checkpoint, a standard PIN helps no one. This is where the duress PIN/password comes in. It is a specific, alternative credential. If entered, it irreversibly wipes the device (including installed eSIMs) and destroys the keys without requiring a reboot.

The Configuration This is your last line of defense. Use it only if your threat model includes physical coercion. The result is a "clean" device in its factory state.

Path: Settings → Security & privacy → Device unlock → Duress Password

Action: Define a duress PIN or password that automatically wipes the entire device upon entry.

Network Hygiene: Private DNS & VPN Killswitch

The Concept Your ISP or mobile carrier sees every domain you visit. These metadata points are often more valuable than the content of the connection. Furthermore, if your VPN connection drops for even a second, traffic can leak through your regular connection.

The Configuration You need to encrypt your DNS queries (e.g., via NextDNS or Quad9) and ensure no packet leaves the device without the VPN tunnel.

Private DNS: Settings → Network & internet → Private DNS → Private DNS provider hostname (enter your provider).

VPN Killswitch: Settings → Network & internet → VPN → (Gear Icon) → Select "Always-on VPN" AND "Block connections without VPN".

Compartmentalization: User Profiles

The Concept In a standard Android setup, most apps live inside the same user profile. That is risky.

User Profiles leverage the OS user isolation model to sandbox users with separate app instances and separate data. Your banking app should not know your social media app exists.

The Configuration Treat profiles like separate physical rooms.

Path: Settings → System → Multiple users

Action: Create separate profiles for "Banking", "Social Media", or "High Security".

Note: You can create up to 32 secondary user profiles.

Hardware Hardening: Sensors and Biometrics

The Concept Biometrics (fingerprint) are for convenience, not security. In some jurisdictions, you can be compelled to use biometrics more easily than to disclose a passphrase.

Cameras and microphones are the ultimate spying tools. App permissions are good; system-wide toggles are better.

The Configuration

Camera & Mic: Add the "Camera access" and "Microphone access" tiles to your Quick Settings panel. When toggled off, access is blocked system-wide.

Sensors: GrapheneOS can also disable granting the Sensors permission to apps by default via a global toggle.

Fingerprint: If you cross borders or find yourself in critical situations, disable biometric unlock temporarily. Rely on a strong alphanumeric passphrase.

The Wi-Fi Calling & Flight Mode Workflow Eliminate cellular tracking and preserve resources in trusted environments.

"As long as your cellular modem is active, you are leaving a digital trail."

Every time your phone connects to a tower, it provides data points for triangulation. This creates a continuous movement profile held by your provider—even if GPS is disabled. This is a fundamental leak in your location privacy.

Furthermore, the constant search for signal is a significant drain on system resources. A strategist does not waste energy. If you are in a secure Wi-Fi environment, the connection to cellular towers is an unnecessary risk.

The Configuration

The objective is to route all communication through an encrypted Wi-Fi tunnel and physically disable the cellular radio. You remain reachable for calls and SMS, but to the cell towers, you are effectively invisible.

1. Set Network Preference Navigate to: Settings → Network & Internet → SIMs → [Select your SIM] → Wi-Fi Calling.

Action: Set the preference to "Call over Wi-Fi" (Wi-Fi preferred).

2. The Operational Workflow

Step 1: Activate Airplane Mode (this severs all radio connections).

Step 2: Manually re-enable Wi-Fi.

OPSEC Note: Your device no longer communicates with cellular masts, yet it remains functional for voice and data over the internet.

Conclusion

Sovereignty is not a product you buy. It is a process.

GrapheneOS provides the walls. These settings provide the locks.

Take the time to understand your threat model. Convenience is the enemy of security.

Android was once the "open" system.

If you wanted an app, you downloaded the APK, enabled "Install unknown apps," and you were in.

That era is ending.

In the background, Google is building a fundamental architectural change. It does not make installing software technically impossible, but it suffocates the process with so many hurdles and warnings that it effectively dies for the average user.

The tools: Developer Verification and the so-called Advanced Flow.

Here is what is coming in 2026/2027, why F-Droid and Nostr have a problem, and why GrapheneOS is becoming the last fortress.

The Paradigm Shift: From "Unknown" to "Registered"

Previously on Android, trust was the user's responsibility. If you trusted a file, the OS installed it.

The new model flips this. Trust is now assigned centrally.

Starting in September 2026 (launching in pilot regions like Brazil and Singapore, planned globally for 2027+), apps on certified Android devices must be registered and linked to a verified developer identity.

It is no longer just about a cryptographic signature (does the file have integrity?). It is about bureaucracy (who are you?).

The Coercion: Developers must register their package names and signing keys with Google.

The Data: Name, address, phone number. For companies, D-U-N-S numbers and organizational documents.

The Fee: A one-time payment to enter the system.

If you opt out of this regime — for example, as a pseudonym Cypherpunk or a developer who refuses to register — your app is considered "unregistered." And unregistered apps will be blocked by default or pushed into a high-risk installation path on certified devices.

"Advanced Flow" — The Weapon Is UX

Google will not ban sideloading outright. That would be antitrust suicide. Instead, they use weaponized UX.

If you attempt to install an unregistered app — such as an APK from GitHub or an alternative store — you enter the Advanced Flow. This is no longer a simple "Yes/No" box. It is a gauntlet.

Scare Screens. Visual warnings that associate legitimate software with fraud and viruses.

Friction. Additional confirmation steps and "anti-scam" delays.

Identity Checks. The system constantly signals: "This is unsafe because Google has not verified this author."

The goal is clear. A formidable emergency exit remains for power users. But the average user is bombarded with warnings until they capitulate and crawl back to the Play Store.

The Victims: F-Droid and Nostr

This change hits alternative ecosystems hard.

F-Droid has traditionally compiled many apps itself and signed them with its own keys. This was a security feature. In the new Google model, it becomes a liability.

F-Droid would have to register these keys as an organization. If Google were to ban or restrict the F-Droid account, thousands of apps would suddenly become "unregistered" and accessible only through the terrorizing Advanced Flow.

Then there is the Zapstore (Nostr).

Decentralized stores on the Nostr protocol are censorship-resistant in distribution. No one can stop you from finding the app.

But Google controls the installer on the device.

The installer needs specific permissions. Google can heuristically classify installers that constantly load "unregistered" APKs as malware droppers.

And updates become hell. If the Advanced Flow must be navigated for every single update, convenience dies.

The Fortress GrapheneOS: The Only Way Out?

In this roadmap, GrapheneOS transforms from a privacy tool into a structural necessity.

GrapheneOS is based on AOSP (Android Open Source Project), but it is not tied to Google's certification backend. The operating system does not enforce a check against the Google developer database as a condition for installation.

On GrapheneOS, sideloading remains what it should be: your decision.

But there is a final boss: The Play Integrity API.

Banking apps and government software increasingly enforce "Device Integrity." These signals are linked to "certified device" criteria. GrapheneOS typically passes basic integrity checks, but often fails higher tiers that rely on Google certification chains. The battle shifts from "Can I install it?" to "Can I run it?"

The future of Android freedom does not lie in asking Google to stay open. It lies in owning hardware and software that does not belong to Google.

There is a glimmer of hope. GrapheneOS is working on a partnership with a hardware manufacturer (OEM) to bring devices with official support to market, potentially in the 2026/2027 window.

Verdict: Strategy for 2026

The "Apple-ization" of Android is decided. The operating system will split into two classes: a gilded cage for consumers (Stock Android) and a rough, free zone for sovereigns (AOSP/GrapheneOS).

Your strategy:

Learn sideloading without fear. Use tools like Obtainium to fetch apps directly from GitHub and verify signatures.

Leave the Google identity compulsion. Support developers who offer APKs directly.

Switch to GrapheneOS. If you are serious, there is no way around it. Keep a cheap secondary phone ("Banking Slave") for apps that enforce Play Integrity if you must.

Freedom has become inconvenient. But the alternative is total dependence on a gatekeeper who decides what software is allowed to run on your property.

Preface

The state is the most dangerous institution in human history. It has killed hundreds of millions, impoverished billions, and now constructs surveillance infrastructure that would make prior tyrannies weep with envy. Three groups of people might resist. Each has a fatal weakness.

Projects fail not from technical inadequacy but from economic ignorance: misaligned incentives, unsustainable models, vulnerability to the very powers they meant to resist. Implementation without theory is blind. The state does not fear tools it can co-opt.

Freedom-seeking individuals sense that something is deeply wrong. They distrust institutions, question official narratives, seek alternatives to systems that feel increasingly hostile. This instinct is correct. But awareness without understanding is paralysis. They know they should be concerned about surveillance, about financial control, about the consolidation of power. They do not know what to do. They lack both the theoretical framework to understand what they face and the technical knowledge to defend against it. Instinct without strategy is helpless. The state does not fear the confused.

Each group's weakness is dangerous. The economist who cannot build, the engineer who cannot reason, the individual who cannot act: all are neutralized despite their partial knowledge.

This book exists to fix that.

The Synthesis

Two intellectual traditions, developing independently across the twentieth century, arrived at the same conclusions about privacy, money, and freedom. The question lingers after every critique of state power: can people escape? Or has the conditioning run too deep, the programming too thorough, the dependency too entrenched?

The answer matters more than the diagnosis. Recognizing the cage is worthless if you remain permanently inside it.

Psychologist Martin Seligman spent decades studying this question, though he framed it differently. In 1967, he discovered learned helplessness: dogs exposed to inescapable electric shocks stopped trying to escape even when escape became possible. They had learned that their actions produced no change. The outcome was independent of what they did.

The parallel to state education, welfare dependency, and regulatory capture is obvious. Seligman's discovery fifty years later inverted the mechanism entirely.

Passivity is the default, unlearned response to prolonged aversive stimulation. What must be learned is control. The brain's baseline assumption is that control is absent. Agency must be demonstrated through action, built up through experience.

This changes everything about how to escape state dependence.

Understanding the programming

State schooling produced helplessness by design.

After Napoleon crushed Prussia at Jena in 1806, philosopher Johann Gottlieb Fichte advocated a new education system with an explicit goal: destroy individual free will to create obedient subjects. The Volksschulen deliberately discouraged reading and independent thought among peasant children. Horace Mann imported this model to Massachusetts in the 1850s, where it spread into American compulsory education.

John Taylor Gatto, named New York State Teacher of the Year in 1991 after thirty years in the system, documented what schools teach: confusion through incoherent information, acceptance of class position, indifference to everything, emotional and intellectual dependency, provisional self-esteem requiring constant external validation, and submission to surveillance.

The evidence suggests it works. Before compulsory education, Massachusetts literacy stood at 98 percent. After implementation, it topped out at 91 percent. Schools succeeded in training.

Recent academic research by Agustina Paglayan confirms what the system's architects stated plainly: public schools were created to suppress dissent and indoctrinate obedience. The confusion of schooling with education is itself evidence the programming worked.

Twelve years of this conditioning produces adults who struggle to conceive of alternatives. The inability to imagine building roads privately, educating children at home, trading on voluntary terms, or securing wealth outside banking systems is evidence the indoctrination succeeded, full stop.

But Seligman's research offers something useful: if control is learned, it can be learned. If agency must be demonstrated, it can be demonstrated.

Why theory falls short

The libertarian and cypherpunk movements have produced remarkable theory. Forty years of Austrian economics, anarcho-capitalist philosophy, and cryptographic innovation. The intellectual case against state power is complete, the tools exist, and the blueprints are drawn.

Yet the practical gains have been thin.

The problem is that understanding alone does cure learned helplessness. Reading Rothbard is necessary but insufficient. Watching lectures on Austrian economics is necessary but insufficient. Agreeing intellectually that taxation is theft while filing your 1040 changes nothing in the behavioral layer where helplessness lives.

Traditional cult deprogramming provides insight into why. Exit counselors use the Strategic Interactive Approach: patient questioning, presenting contradictions between ideology and reality, providing space for doubt, demonstrating care while challenging beliefs. The process works, sometimes, when families intervene with resources and professional help.

For state programming, almost everyone around you carries the same conditioning. Your family attended government schools. Your friends did too, your colleagues as well. There is no external vantage point from which to stage an intervention.

Self-directed deprogramming becomes both necessary and exceptionally difficult. The programming specifically prevents the first step. Learned helplessness manifests as inability to try even when escape is available. You know the cage door is unlocked, and you still cannot bring yourself to push it.

The cure is behavioral, not cognitive.

The counterintuitive cure

Seligman's dogs could think their way out of helplessness in exactly the same way a person can think themselves into physical fitness: the thought helps with direction but accomplishes nothing by itself. Experimenters had to physically pick the dogs up and move their legs through the escape action. Once. Twice. After enough repetitions the dogs would jump on their own.

They did not need to understand the theory of operant conditioning. They needed to experience that their actions produced outcomes.

For humans recovering from cult involvement, therapists report a similar pattern. Knowing intellectually that the cult lied is a start. The person must then experience making a decision, seeing the result, and recognizing the connection between action and outcome. This happens through small steps: choosing what to wear, deciding what to eat, making a minor purchase independently. Each choice demonstrates agency. Each demonstration weakens the programming.

The same mechanism applies to state dependence.

You must act your way to independence. Each act of defiance, however small, teaches your brain that you have control. Each time you exercise agency and survive, the learned helplessness weakens.

This explains why decades of libertarian theory produced so little behavioral change. Theory is necessary for direction, insufficient for movement. A man lost in the desert needs both a map and the will to walk. The movement has provided excellent maps while leaving people paralyzed at the trailhead.

Samuel Edward Konkin III understood this. His counter-economics was a therapeutic strategy as much as a political one. By engaging in forbidden but peaceful trade, by trading risk for profit, by experiencing immediate self-liberation from state controls, the agorist demonstrates to himself that he can function outside state permission.

The act itself is the cure.

Practical pathways out

Multiple escape routes exist. Choose one that matches your circumstances and tolerance for risk, then start. Starting imperfectly beats waiting for perfect conditions.

Homeschooling and unschooling

Remove your children from state programming before it calcifies. Homeschoolers consistently outperform institutionally schooled children by five to ten years in ability to think independently. This happens because children learn by doing when freed from the system designed to teach helplessness.

The initial step terrifies most parents. They believe they lack certification, that college admissions will close, that they will fail. This is the programming talking. George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Edison, and Andrew Carnegie attended no secondary school. They learned through apprenticeship, reading, and action.

You need to start. The fear is evidence the conditioning worked, evidence about your conditioning and nothing about your capacity.

Counter-economics and agorism

Konkin defined counter-economics as all peaceful human action forbidden by the state. Black markets, gray markets, forbidden trade, unlicensed services, tax avoidance, economic activity outside state sanction.

Begin small. Offer a service for cash. Trade goods peer-to-peer. Fix things for neighbors on a handshake. Accept cryptocurrency for work. Each transaction outside state surveillance demonstrates that voluntary exchange functions on its own merits.

The risk is real. Konkin acknowledged that counter-economics means trading risk for profit. Start with low-risk activities: skill trades among friends, cash transactions for small services, cryptocurrency for remittances. As competence grows, expand scope. The goal is demonstrating to yourself that you can produce value and exchange it directly.

Cryptocurrency and financial sovereignty

Bitcoin and privacy-focused cryptocurrencies enable holding wealth outside state-controlled banking systems. El Salvador's adoption shows both the promise and difficulty: nation-state resources could force neither usage nor full accumulation.

Start with small amounts. Learn to generate keys, manage wallets, execute transactions. Experience sending value across borders on your own terms.

Each successful transaction rewires the learned helplessness. Securing wealth, transacting privately, operating outside the banking system: these are active demonstrations, proven through action.

The technology has rough edges, the user experience is poor, and the regulatory risk is real. These are reasons for caution, reasons to start small and learn continuously.

Self-directed learning

Reject credentialism. Skills can be acquired outside institutional approval.

Gatto documented that genius is common. What is rare is environments that do actively suppress it. The internet provides access to more educational resources than existed in all of human history before 1990: MIT OpenCourseWare, academic papers, tutorial videos, open source code, practice platforms.

What blocks learning is learned helplessness masquerading as need for formal instruction. "I cannot learn X without a class" is programming. People learned calculus from books for centuries before video lectures existed. They learned programming by reading code and trying things.

Choose a skill relevant to your goals. Find resources. Start practicing. Document progress publicly if you wish. Each incremental improvement demonstrates that you can acquire capability on your own initiative.

Physical autonomy

Reclaim your body from medical technocracy. Learn basic nutrition, exercise science, injury prevention. Doctors are essential for trauma and acute illness and largely superfluous for maintaining health.

The medicalization of normal human functioning is recent. People managed health, gave birth, recovered from illness, and died for all of human history until approximately 1950 with minimal professional supervision. Modern medicine offers real miracles for specific problems and also creates dependence where health requires only consistent practice.

Start with fitness. Strength training, cardiovascular health, flexibility, mobility: these are achievable with free information and consistent effort. Each month you remain healthy through your own practices demonstrates that you can manage your body.

Food production

Grow something. Even apartment dwellers can maintain herbs, sprouts, or small vegetables. Suburban residents can garden.

The goal is breaking the psychological dependence on industrial food systems. When you grow tomatoes, harvest them, prepare them, and eat them, you experience the connection between action and sustenance.

Most people in developed nations have produced no food. They have experienced food appearing in stores as if by magic. Growing food demonstrates the mechanism: it is knowledge and effort, both acquirable. A single plant proves the point.

Geographic arbitrage

If your country criminalizes independence, leave. Millions of people achieve partial sovereignty through perpetual travel or residence in jurisdictions with lighter state presence.

Digital work enables location independence for many professions. Cost of living differences mean you can work less while living better. Tax treatment varies by jurisdiction. Some countries forgo taxation of foreign-source income. Some have territorial systems. Some are less competent at enforcement.

The goal is escaping jurisdictions where every action requires permission, where building alternatives is criminalized, where independence is punished. Some places are better than others. Use that.

Building in public

Create things. Share them freely. Document the process. Accept no institutional affiliation.

Open source software development demonstrates that humans can coordinate complex projects with no hierarchy, ownership, or state involvement required. Wikipedia shows that knowledge can be compiled and maintained through voluntary contribution. Bitcoin proves that money can function with no central bank.

The act of building in public demonstrates agency. Each contribution proves you can create value. Each user or reader proves that value is recognized. Publishing and receiving voluntary engagement proves that your work has worth independent of authority's validation.

Local parallel institutions

Food co-ops. Tool libraries. Skill shares. Homeschool co-ops. Repair cafes. Time banks. Cryptocurrency meetups. Any voluntary association that provides value outside state systems.

These exist in most cities already. Join them. If they are absent, start them. The barrier to entry is often just announcing a time and place.

Each interaction within parallel institutions demonstrates that humans can cooperate, exchange, learn, and provide for themselves directly. The programming says only the state can coordinate these functions. Participating in alternatives proves the programming wrong. This is especially effective because it is social: you encounter other people who have broken free or are breaking free. The isolation of learned helplessness is countered by community.

Why most will hold back

The obstacle is internal.

Learned helplessness manifests as inability to try. You know intellectually that you could homeschool, learn skills independently, grow food, build in public, join alternatives. You find yourself unable to start. The first step feels impossible.

The programming is working as designed.

Post-cult recovery literature describes "floating": the person oscillates between cult and non-cult worldviews, unable to commit to either. They know intellectually the cult lied, but emotionally they hold on. The conditioning creates comfort in dependence. Independence feels dangerous even when all evidence points to the better path.

You will experience this. After reading this post, you will feel brief motivation followed by rationalization. "I would, but I have a mortgage." "I would, but I have kids." "I would, but the risk is too high." "I would, but I need to understand more first."

These are symptoms, not reasons.

The programming masquerades as prudence, responsibility, reasonable caution. It tells you to wait for better conditions, to research more, to plan carefully. It tells you that other people can act independently but your situation is uniquely constrained, that you will start soon but today is premature.

The cure is to notice it, name it, and act anyway. Pick the smallest possible step on any pathway that matches your current constraints. Do it today. Experience the result. Notice that you survived.

Then take the next small step.

The programming dissolves through repeated demonstrations that you have agency. Each action weakens it incrementally. The learned helplessness breaks over time. You stop waiting for authorities to solve problems. You stop believing you require permission.

This happens through doing.

The path forward

State dependence is learned helplessness applied to an entire population. The cure is the same as for individuals: demonstrate control through action.

The pathways exist: homeschooling, counter-economics, cryptocurrency, self-directed learning, physical autonomy, food production, geographic arbitrage, building in public, parallel institutions. Each has different risk profiles, requirements, and outcomes. Each breaks dependence through different mechanisms.

Choose one that fits your circumstances. Start today with the smallest possible step. Experience the result.

Then take the next step.

The programming will resist. You will feel fear, doubt, rationalization, paralysis. This is expected. It is evidence you are near the edge of the cage. The learned helplessness fights hardest when escape becomes possible.

Act anyway.

The state maintains power through the belief that you cannot function independently. Each act of independence disproves that belief. Agency demonstrated weakens the programming. Each small success makes the next attempt easier.

Free men built thirty thousand miles of roads. Free men created wealth, raised children, learned trades, conducted commerce, built tools, and lived lives through their own judgment for most of human history. You can do the same, because learned helplessness is a taught response, and taught responses can be unlearned.

Crowdfunding should have been revolutionary. For the first time, creators could bypass banks, venture capitalists, and traditional gatekeepers to raise money directly from people who believed in their vision. And for a while, it worked. Kickstarter funded creative projects that would never have attracted institutional investment. Indiegogo gave hardware startups a path to market. The promise was real: permissionless funding for anyone with a good idea.

Then came the failures. Products that never shipped. Projects that raised millions and delivered nothing. Backers learned the hard way that crowdfunding platforms hold your money, but they don't guarantee results. When a project fails, your contribution disappears into the void.

The cryptocurrency world promised to do better. Initial Coin Offerings removed the middleman entirely, letting investors send funds directly to project wallets. This solved the centralization problem while creating a far worse one: once you sent your Bitcoin or Ethereum to an ICO, it was gone. The founder controlled it completely. If the project was fraudulent, if the team abandoned it, if the promised product never materialized, you had no recourse whatsoever. The result was billions in losses and a generation of investors who learned to treat any crypto fundraising opportunity as a probable scam.

The problem in both cases is not bad actors alone but bad architecture. Traditional crowdfunding concentrates power in platforms that become gatekeepers and single points of failure. ICOs eliminate the middleman but also eliminate accountability, giving founders total control over investor funds from the moment of contribution. Neither model solves the fundamental alignment problem: how do you ensure that founders deliver on promises when investors have already handed over their money?

Angor offers a different answer. Built on Bitcoin with communication through Nostr, Angor is a peer-to-peer funding protocol that restructures the relationship between founders and investors through programmable contracts. The core innovation is deceptively simple: investor funds are never sent directly to founders. Instead, they are locked in Bitcoin contracts that release money in stages over time, and investors retain the ability to recover unspent funds at any point in the process.

The mechanism works like this. A founder creates a project specifying a funding target, timeline, and staged release schedule. Perhaps thirty percent releases after three months, another thirty percent after six months, and the final forty percent after a year. Investors commit Bitcoin to the project, but their funds go into a time-locked contract, not the founder's wallet. As each stage's timelock expires, that portion of the funds becomes available to the founder. Crucially, investors can initiate a recovery transaction at any time to reclaim funds that have not yet been released to the founder.

The technical foundation combines several Bitcoin capabilities. Taproot enables the complex conditional spending paths required for staged release and recovery. Two-of-two multisig contracts allow founders and investors to cooperatively release funds or, absent cooperation, enable the penalty-based unilateral recovery. Nostr provides identity and communication: users log in with their existing Nostr keys, bringing their social graph with them. This means you can see which projects your contacts have funded, which founders exist within your web of trust, and communicate directly without creating yet another account on yet another platform. Project descriptions, milestone updates, and founder-investor messaging all flow through Nostr relays. The result is a fully decentralized system with no backend servers, no platform holding funds, and no central authority that could censor projects or freeze accounts.

For founders, Angor offers access to global capital without surrendering equity, without navigating regulatory barriers, and without depending on platform approval. The staged release model does require patience since funds arrive incrementally, not all at once. But this constraint is also a signal: founders confident in their ability to deliver can accept milestone-based funding, while those planning to take the money and run will find Angor's architecture inhospitable.

For investors, the recovery option transforms the risk calculation entirely. Traditional crowdfunding and ICOs are binary bets: you either trust the project completely or you do not participate. Angor introduces gradation. You can commit funds to a promising project knowing that you retain meaningful control over uncommitted portions. If the founder fails to deliver updates, if the project stalls, if better opportunities emerge, you have a path out that does not depend on the founder's goodwill or a platform's intervention.

This matters beyond the individual transaction. The ability to exit disciplines the entire system. Founders know that investor funds can leave if promises go unkept. This knowledge shapes behavior: projects must demonstrate progress to maintain support. The traditional crowdfunding model, where funds are committed irrevocably upon campaign success, creates no such ongoing accountability. Once Kickstarter backers have paid, their leverage evaporates. Angor keeps leverage distributed throughout the project lifecycle.

The implications extend beyond crowdfunding itself. Angor demonstrates that exit options can be cryptographically guaranteed, not merely promised. Any relationship that currently requires one party to trust another with locked-up capital can be restructured around recoverable commitments. Employment contracts, rental deposits, escrow arrangements, and service agreements all involve situations where one party holds another's funds and the other must trust that the money will be returned or properly applied. Bitcoin's programmability makes it possible to encode the recovery option into the transaction itself, eliminating the need to trust institutions or individuals who might not honor their commitments.

Angor is not without limitations. The Bitcoin-only model excludes those who do not hold Bitcoin. Transaction fees apply to every operation. The penalty system for early recovery creates a real cost for changing your mind. The protocol is young, with a limited track record and an evolving feature set. These are legitimate considerations for anyone evaluating whether to use it.

But the core principle is sound. The exit option changes everything. When investors can walk away, founders must earn continued commitment instead of collecting it once and forgetting about accountability. When recovery is built into the protocol itself, not promised by a company, trust shifts from institutions to mathematics. When the entire system runs on Bitcoin and Nostr without central servers, no regulator, platform, or payment processor can decide who gets to fund what.

You're right that it's better when no single person or small cadre can unilaterally throttle access to the public square.

However, I don't think it was that unclear at the time that deplatforming Trump violated Twitter's nominal commitment to free speech. What made it a difficult decision was Twitter's workforce, which was composed almost exclusively of progressive Democrats. The tribal drumbeat to drive out their political adversary must have been deafening.

Had Twitter had a commitment to hire people with actual diversity of thought, maybe there would've been more principled defenders of free speech to push back.

Did I miss anything that makes Ocean more decentralized than other pools today?

Why is Ocean not open source?

If Ocean is as revolutionary and decentralizing as it's being made out to be, wouldn't the best thing for Bitcoin be that all pools switch over time to the same mode?

If so, why isn't Ocean open-sourcing any of it's protocol or code? In the announcement it seemed that GrassFedBitcoin (npub1wnl…n3wr) was bragging that no competitor would be able to "reproduce" their lead dev's code, thus keeping their competitive edge.

There was no mention to my knowledge of open source, but it's possible I missed it!

What guarantee do miners have that you won't censor transactions?

As miners cannot submit their own block templates right now and the source is not open code, miners have to rely on manually checking a visual block template on your site to find censorship.

Luke Dashjr (npub1lh2…a9nk) has a history of censoring what he viewed as "spam," and there was a lot of time spent in the conference talking about how bad Ordinals are and how bad pools are that mine them.

What guarantees or promises do miners have that you won't censor transactions you don't like?

How will Ocean handle regulatory pressure to enact KYC?

In the event that regulators of the Feds come knocking and want you to implement KYC (as seems to be the case with other pools), what will you do?

What will Ocean's fee model be after the 0% period?

There was a lot of talk about how most pools subsidize larger miners and charge exhorbitant fees to smaller miners during the conference. One thing that wasn't ever mentioned was what Ocean's fee policy will be after the 2mo 0% fee period.

Could you explain how the fee model will work?

Judging from the comments on his page, it appears that Steven B Harris has died. My deepest sympathies to his friends and family.

I worked with him at 21st Century Medicine, and he always struck me as kind and highly knowledgeable across many disciplines. He--along with Mike Darwin, Brian Wowk, and Greg Fahy--deserves kudos for advancing the state of the art of cryobiological science. (1)

He was one of the few MD's willing to publicly stick up for cryonics research in the face of severe professional ostracism. (2) He also assisted with a number of cryonics cases.

I hope that he was successfully cryopreserved, and that he will someday enjoy much more life thanks to the technology he helped to advance.

Sam Bankman-Fried caused enormous harm, and I, like many others, want him to face justice. But letting him rot in prison seems like a waste. To me, proper justice would involve him making as much restitution to his victims as he can with his remaining life.

He's non-violent, so there's no physical threat that requires locking him away from the rest of society.

Instead, he should be forced to wear an ankle monitor, and allowed to find what jobs he can. In order to incentivize him to work, he should get to keep a percentage of the money he earns above the amount required to monitor him. (The rest should go toward a victim restitution fund.) The more he makes, the higher the percentage of his earnings he gets to keep.

IMO, I think it's a good idea, but done at the level of the person, rather than the level of posts.

It would be easier to just post funny memes and interesting science. It's time consuming and unpleasant to make unpopular points (such as the fact that Israeli bombs and food/fuel/water embargoes have killed far more children than Hamas has). But imagine if you knew that Jews were being gassed by your government, and you said nothing because it was unpopular?

Many controversial topics are also heavily throttled by social media's censorship algorithms. I might feel more relaxed about building a bubble for myself if I trusted that mainstream media sources weren't routinely spreading lies and propaganda (I bet many people still believe Hunter Biden's laptop was a Russian plant, that Kyle Rittenhouse murdered three black men in cold blood, or that 300 K children are being trafficked in the US ).

So rather than build my bubble at the level of the post, I try to surround myself with peple who can discuss controversial discuss topic politely, follow good argumentation practices, and assume good will. People who fail to do those things consistently get dropped from my feed.

Are you familiar with Arweave? It's a project intended to store data permanently in a decentralized, censorship manner for a one time fee.

One of the concerns I have about the njump service is that the service will be abandoned, and the njump links will go 404.

Therefore, I'd like the njump info be stored on the Arweave network, and the Arweave link posted to twitter instead of the link to njump. That way, even if the njump service disappears, my tweet will still be visible on Twitter. I'd also like the arweave link to be added to my Nostr post.

Since the Arweave network necessarily requires a fee for storage, this could also be a way to finance the service--add a percentage for the Twitter bridge on top of the Arweave fee.

Arweave doesn't charge a fee for storage up to 500 KB, so maybe short, image-free tweets are free, and charge a fee for long tweets + image / video storage.

1. I know Twitter doesn't yet support uploading longform tweets via the API. When it becomes possible to do so, I would prefer that the tweet not be truncated.

2. May we also have a flag to turn off the njump link? Unfortunately, Twitter posts mostly a duplicate of the tweet as a preview in blinding black on white text.

3. Would like to be able to upload attached images directly to Twitter. As I think only one image per upload is allowed, upload the first image in the tweet, if there are multiple images.
