Yeah, there is no go-around with a glider, so we have to practice landings very well before departing on such a flight.

There are established meadows that are (probably) safe to land and we always keep them in safe gliding distance in case the thermals run out.

I really like the challenge of it, plus its a very calm and peaceful way of flying.

This video isn't an uninterrupted timelapse but rather combines several intermittent image sequences that were captured during the flyby.

It was originally published by NASA on Instagram. Most of these frames have not been published in full quality yet.

I was ready to go to bed late last night, but continued to listen to the audio descriptions from the astronauts which were incredibly captivating. In my mind I was painting a picture of this scene, and the images certainly didn't disappoint.

This is a HDR merge combining the long exposure art002e009573 with the shorter art002e009571. I also fixed the motion blurred stars with deconvolution and applied some noise reduction and slight color adjustmens.

I really can't stop looking at this photo - We usually think of space as being entirely empty and dark, but our Sun has a lot of dust around it that we can rarely see. This so called Zodiacal light is giving the moon this eerie backlit glow.

And four people really have been there and witnessed this yesterday, absolutely blows my mind!

At this point I gave in to the LLM temptation and had Codex write me a custom optimization routine to fit the affine transform, tilt value and even optimize the capture time since the EXIF time is often slightly off.

I converted the Ephemeris file published by NASA (https://www.nasa.gov/missions/artemis/artemis-2/track-nasas-artemis-ii-mission-in-real-time/) to a Spice kernel, then used Spice to calculate the sub-observer point and distance to make an initial nsper projection. I then used QGIS to georeference the image to the NASA BlackMarble night light image (https://science.nasa.gov/earth/earth-observatory/earth-at-night/maps/).

Unfortunately, an affine transform couldn't fit this perfectly, since the image is not exactly pointed to nadir and needs perspective correction.

I started with some 50 year old permanent slides shown in the first post. The first one shows a fruit fly and the second one a brine shrimp (sea monkey), both under darkfield illumination.

I can't believe it has already been 4 years since the Perseverance rover landed on Mars!

The rover was equipped with six engineering camera that captured more than 26.000 images during the landing!

I used a high pass filter to transfer only the small scale details of his animation to a common background image, eliminating the flicker almost completely.
For the version above I also applied interpolation with RIFE 4.4 to create a smooth video.

This animation was originally processed by Andrea Luck (Andrea Luck (npub1zc8…nxvk)) who did an amazing job colorizing the individual grayscale filters with an RGB triplet from the middle of the sequence.
Because the different filters from HRSC have very different spectral responses, some flickering remained in the sequence.

This outbreak of local dust storms was captured by the Mars Express HRSC camera on November 16, 2006.

HRSC captures Mars with many different filters, some looking ahead of the spacecraft and some behind.
These images are taken over the course of about one minute, allowing for some nice short duration animations of moving clouds or dust.

What I'm applying here is called optical flow, the software essentially calculates how each part of the image moved relative to the reference and then warps the image to match.

This worked surprisingly well for these images thanks to the large amount of detail in the image.

For those wondering what this is, color images like these taken by the Rosetta OSIRIS NAC camera are not taken instantaneously, but each filter is taken sequentially.

This creates parallax between the filters which causes lots of headaches to the people processing these images...

The first results were promising, but the tail didn't really get much more visible, even with aggressive post processing.

Towards the end of the timelapse, the sun fires off one CME directly towards Earth, a so called halo CME which often causes aurora here on Earth. It should arrive in a few days.

The energetic particles from the associated flare create lots of bright streaks when they hit the image sensor.

Afterwards I got a great tour around ESOC from Ignacio Tanco, the JUICE Spacecraft operations manager.

My highlight was seeing the JUICE engineering model in person. It's so much bigger than I imagined, especially if you consider the huge solar arrays that are missing here.
If you look closely, the blue box shaped object on the left is (a replica of) one of the JMC cameras that took these amazing photos.
