Castillo San Cristóbal was the main defensive fortress of San Juan, on Puerto Rico, built by the Spanish 1634-1783 in stone on 27 acres, and the largest fort they ever built in the New World. Since the fortress had no access to fresh water engineers built five large cisterns connected by channels and pipes to to collect all rainwater that fell on fort, making it completely independent on any other water sources. The cisterns together held almost 800,000 gallons and with frequent rains it would essentially never risk running out of water. The system was in use until 1898 when San Juan was captured by the U.S. who feared the Spanish had poisoned the cisterns. In 2011 the rainwater harvesting resumed and the fort is now self-sufficient in facilities water.

Almost anyone can build their own home. It isn't esoteric knowledge and doesn't involve fine rapid motor skills requiring extreme precision like playing the violin. Just like sewing a pair of pants or even a whole suit, every step of building a home can be accomplished by taking time to carefully complete every step of the process in order using the correct techniques depending on the materials used. But there is no way an amateur can build homes more profitably or efficiently than a professional home builder. That takes experience and skills beyond the ability of most individuals these days. It is the same with clothing. I buy my suit because it is cheaper for me to get it off the rack than it is for me to make it myself. The interesting difference is when you want something not available on the market, or when the market is so distorted as to make even the DIY approach more efficient. Or better even. I am convinced that the modern home (housing, to be exact) is now more expensive, more unhealthy and more wasteful than what you'd have if you built it yourself. A lot of what I post about here is myself looking into what it would take to create homes and communities by ourselves rather than relying on banks, governments and industry. You can learn too, by tagging along with me.

The traditional latticework of the tea houses in Kanazawa are called kimusuko (木虫籠), and installed in such a manner that in the daytime you have almost a full view of the outside, but from the outside you can not see almost anything of the inside. It is all because of the trapezoid shape of the lattices. In the old days before electric lightning this was the perfect solution for busy streets and more private interiors. But these days, no matter how well designed the lattices are, at night the situation becomes a little of the opposite with better views of the inside than of the outside. Presently curtains or sliding paper doors are used from dusk to shield the interiors.

If you don’t know Grand Central Atelier, you should now. They’ll be essential contributors to the next great monuments and works of figurative art. I’ve been lucky to interact with the tiny group of recent graduates from their sculpture program (Maia Williamson, Sam Davis, and Monumental Labs’ very own Julian Prairie) and they are some of the most talented sculptors of their generation. The political angle of the article and in fact the politicization of classical art in general is quite funny to watch. From what I see, the people who generally teach and learn at GCA and other classical art schools are nowhere near being the MAGA types that media coverage would have you imagine. This is Millan House, on Lennox Hill, Upper East Side, Manhattan NYC. Built in 1931 for Rockefeller by NY state architect Andrew J. Thomas who was famous for being cost efficient as rental homes for employees of the Rockefeller Institute(their director was the first tenant). Romanesque Revival on the street side, and Italianate on the garden side. The animal themed door surrounds are carved limestone. Once it represented an almost philanthropic interest in beauty and honest labor. Today, it wouldn't be difficult to copy these and have them machine carved and replaced, or remade to fit other buildings in other cities around the world.

The only listed heritage toilets in Copenhagen (and maybe the last in use). These modern courtyard WC were built in 1915 to replace the earlier "dry" outhouses, and was to be used by 20 employees of a workshop as well as residents of one of the apartment buildings. In 1923 the apartments got private WCs but these toilets were still in use by some workers so were kept going until they were successfully protected thanks to the efforts of a historical building group. One toilet is open to the public and two are closed. On top of the toilets are a dovecote. Possibly someone in the neighborhood raised pigeons as a side business. The surrounding street (of setts) is also listed, and in good shape after a century in use and never renovated. Krystalgade 5.
