Episode 193: Codex & Claude Code On Your Phone

Introducing the OpenAgents Tricoder mobile app, enabling developers to easily use OpenAI Codex and Claude Code from their phone, anywhere in the world.

The app is live now in TestFlight, coming soon for Android, and 100% open-source under Apache 2.

How it works:
1. Download the app
2. Run a single npx command from your desktop and get a pairing QR code
3. Scan the QR code from the app and start chatting

"I'm excited for developers to experience what I experienced last week, where I had probably my single greatest daily increase in my own personal productivity just getting this working, walking around my house and talking to it."

Pairing devices can be done in either of two ways:

1. Local network -- Direct pairing over wifi, no accounts needed. Devices must stay nearby on the same network

2. @Tailscale VPN -- Enables you to stay connected anywhere. Leave your desktop on at home, use the mobile app from the grocery store. Just needs a free install of Tailscale on both devices. (Support for other VPNs coming soon)

The desktop bridge communicates with Claude Code and Codex via the amazing new Agent Client Protocol from @zeddotdev. We'll add support soon for @opencode and other agents as users request them.

Please forgive its very basic UI and inevitable bugs. The codebase is just <1 week old but now that the hard parts are done, we'll be rapidly adding features and polish based on user feedback.

For now this app can be a nice supplement to your desktop coding work. Over the coming months, we're excited to explore replacing old-fashioned IDEs altogether.

We demo our new Compute network by paying bitcoin for an AI chat message, using Mistral's new Codestral model running on a separate computer, paid with a bitcoin micropayment over the Lightning network.

Our compute provider, running Commander v0.0.4, sees their bitcoin balance increase, paid directly into their Spark wallet and able to be immediately withdrawn via Lightning invoice.

The peer communication uses Nostr via NIP-90, the open protocol for 'data vending machines' enabling 'money in, data out' for a wide variety of services.

We begin with LLM inference but can soon extend to any service added by any service provider, all permissionless & extensible.

Building on the open protocols of bitcoin & nostr means we can also interoperate easily with similar efforts like Routstr and Inference Grid.

We announce we're rebooting our swarm compute network: previously called GPUtopia, now called OpenAgents Compute.

This will enable anyone in the world to sell their spare compute for bitcoin, simply by running a desktop app with a built-in bitcoin wallet.

We're building an updated version of our previously successful GPUtopia software that supported swarm inference, embedding, finetuning, and image generation using open models behind an OpenAI-compatible API endpoint. It begins as a payments & agent-builder layer on top of Ollama.

We'll build & beta-test this in our Discord over the next week and expect to have the first payments sent to compute providers no later than one week from today.

We phased out the original GPUtopia network 18 months ago because we had an oversupply of sellers and no compelling buy-side use cases. We predicted at the time that the logical buyers of this swarm compute would someday be AI agents.

At this weekend's PlebLab hackathon we demo our new Agent Payments API: the easiest way for AI agents to send and receive money.

Now devs & vibe coders can add bitcoin payments to their apps and agents with a few simple API calls. Just paste our OpenAPI doc into your coding LLM, add your free API key, and your agents can pay any other agents, users, or any bitcoin Lightning invoice anywhere on the web.

The API currently supports Bitcoin & Lightning payments via the Spark network from Lightspark. We'll soon add stablecoins & other assets all using the bitcoin network for open, global interoperability. Agents should expect nothing less!

Agent Payments is the first of many OpenAgents developer APIs that will make building, using & selling agents as easy as consuming simple HTTP endpoints from any app or agent.

This is now available globally for all developers. But it's still an early beta -- you might call it #reckless -- so please do not yet use this with any funds you can't afford to lose! And please @ us with any bugs or questions.

We plan for this to be the easiest way for AI agents to send and receive money.

More importantly, this adds to the fast-growing agent ecosystem the missing primitive of money, finally enabling a true market economy of agents to emerge.

The loop now works:
- Analyze issue and identify files
- Generate specific code changes
- Apply changes safely
- Track progress and handle errors

While the changes aren't yet high quality enough for automatic PR submission, this provides the foundation for our agentic development system.

It's a goal for which some ClosedAI unicorns have raised hundreds of millions of dollars. But we think we can build this ourselves on the cheap over the next ~10 videos of this series.

Here we critique the trend of complex AI IDEs and web UIs, then decide to build this agentic loop inside version 0.2 of our mobile app Onyx. Because anyone should be able to build reliable software on the go, without being glued to a computer.

We give a tour of our new 'v4' tech stack: a Rust & HTMX webapp and backend alongside the Hyperview framework which brings the hypermedia concept to mobile - working well with our existing React Native codebase for Onyx.

We revisit our UAP/drone data marketplace idea and brainstorm what an agentic open-source intelligence effort might look like.

We chat with o1 pro to develop a high-level blueprint for an agentic OSINT agency: "a decentralized, AI-powered platform that focuses on sensemaking in high-misinformation environments. It rewards contributors for reliable information and analysis using Bitcoin micropayments (via the Lightning Network). We’ll move beyond a single event like drone sightings; this system aims to handle any emerging story where facts are murky and psychological operations (psyops) or disinformation efforts are rampant."

Now that our beta mobile app Onyx has a solid base as a bitcoin wallet & Nostr client, we can connect it to a crowdsourced knowledge graph for humans and agents to make sense of crazy current events (and then everything else!).

We demo Onyx fixing a bug in its own codebase -- without us typing a single word or line of code.

We record ourselves describing the bug in plain language -- voice transcribed with Whisper via Groq API -- and Onyx uses the GitHub API via Gemini 1.5 Pro function calling to look through the needed files and commit a fix directly to our codebase.

When Onyx got stuck because we first told it the wrong place to look, it asked for clarification which we gave in a followup voice message, and the fix was committed directly to our codebase -- all in less than 60 seconds start to finish.

Big thanks to Google & Logan K for a bunch of free Gemini credits! Turns out Gemini works great as a drop-in replacement for Sonnet. Excited to extend this with multimodal...

The chat is blazing fast for iOS, but sadly super slow on Android! We'll work on that & experiment with other options in the coming days.

Our goals for the next week:

The first version of Onyx, launching this week to TestFlight, will include a basic data marketplace enabling anyone to post bounties for data they want added to our global knowledge graph, or to earn bitcoin for collecting that data using our built-in bitcoin wallet.

We'll demo that in tomorrow's video.

For tonight, we're paying so much for ChatGPT Pro that we need to get our money's worth, so we're gonna delegate the rest of this summary to o1 pro:

We try to improve on their answers in a single day of building our own search using basic versions of GraphRAG and test-time compute, enabling the agent to 'think' over a knowledge graph before generating a response.

We get that full flow working with preliminary data, generating a decent response - but not yet better than the billion-dollar AI labs. Maybe in another day or two?

Mostly excited about WANIX as basis for an agent runtime because it enables agents to run local-first in a browser while enabling 1) read/write access to filesystems including GitHub, 2) compilation of new Go programs in the browser (because the Go compiler is shipped to the browser via WASM), 3) an in-browser dev pipeline for webapps and binaries, and 4) usage of our existing agent plugins also using WASM

tl;dr WANIX has all the building blocks needed for agentic recursive self-improvement

Craft HackAIthon entry: Magency, a Nostr client for AI agents

There is no good way to control AI agents on a mobile phone. There should be an app for that!

Magency is a mobile app that lets you "make a wish", aka just say what you want into one text box and see a feed of updates from your agents working.

Our backend has an agentic loop based on the new "intelligent go-explore" algorithm which improves on the usual brittleness of 'chain of thought' agentic loops. More on IGE here: https://arxiv.org/abs/2405.15143

We combine IGE with a new idea: what if agents can access a shared global archive of events - so they can learn from each other - as well as a shared global skill library?

The app's feed of updates is a stream of Nostr events using new event kinds based on IGE: 38000 (wish = agent goal), 38001 (archive), 38002 (action taken).

Magency was an attempt to square the circle of: 1) a consumer-facing UX for controlling multiple agents, 2) a decentralized architecture enabling an open ecosystem of extensible agents that interoperate and evolve.

A bit too ambitious for a 24-hour hackathon, but we are excited to fold these ideas into OpenAgents.
