XChat, on the other hand, is based on NIP-EE (nostr mls) and is designed to be simpler.

The reason we split them into two apps is because they target different user groups. 0xchat private chats lean more toward open — anyone can message you, and conversations can stay synced across multiple devices and clients.

XChat leans more toward private/closed — only people with an invite link can chat with you, and message sync across devices/clients is more difficult.

However, XChat has done more work on security at the app level, such as media encryption, encrypted local database storage, and two-way message/session deletion.

I haven’t solved this problem yet. Right now, the push notifications sent to clients are just something like: “You received a private message.”

I do have a potential solution in mind: the push notification could include the eventid. Then, once the client receives the notification, it could activate for a short period of time to fetch the event, decrypt it, and display the actual content to the user.

However, I haven’t implemented this approach yet — it still needs to be tested and verified.

I agree. NIP-29 group chats are more like Telegram groups (though without encryption), while NIP-17 encrypted group chats are simple to implement but not convenient for managing group members, and suitable only for smaller groups.

MLS group chats are easier to manage group members and more suitable for larger groups, but the implementation is more complex.

The next version of 0xChat will implement MLS group chats, it will be in beta.

This is the option that appears when creating a group. Private groups are encrypted, while open/closed groups are not encrypted. However, with closed groups, only group members can pull messages.
