The trail up the ravine that I hiked last week ends with a steep rock headwall-- 600 ft (180m) floor to rim. It is well known for spring skiing where skiers hike to the top and ski down steep runs. Here is a sequence of pics of the headwall as I hiked to the top, beginning with the first view 2.5 miles (4km) into hike (top left) and ending when I was near the top looking across the headwall (bottom right). #MountainMonday #hiking

Had a great day of hiking in the White Mountains, NH yesterday! Climbed up a steep ravine (upper left), then hiked along the ridge to a high point (jagged peaks in upper right) before looping back down. Winds (and freezing wind chill) were as advertised— clocked at average of 45 mph (72 km/h) at closest summit. Wore lots of layers and full wind suit and was just fine. Packing now for my hike in the Presidential Range, White Mountains, NH. Here I am, sweating from the heat and occasionally standing in front of a fan to cool off, packing a beanie cap, neck gaiter, gloves and mittens, puffy jacket/pants, and full wind suit. Feels so contradictory in the moment, but it's so important to read the mountain forecast. Summit forecast calls for well below-freezing wind chill factor for tomorrow morning, rising to just above freezing later on. ❄️ #hiking #mountains

No doubt that the valleys and high altitude spots have different weather. But beyond that, for forecasts across a constant elevation, I suspect that a violent localized storm might not show up so strongly on forecasts that average over time and area. There is forecast model resolution to be considered as well. I'm not a meteorologist (but sometimes wish I were!).

Not all trails are made just of dirt and rock. Some also involve crossing streams. This is one of our stream crossings from the trip earlier this week. Relatively easy, just took a little thought before taking the stretched-out step over the water between the two boulders-- main concern was that the launch/land points on the two boulders were wet slippery moss on sloping rock surfaces. #FootpathFriday #hiking #nature

PS— the ankle weights help strengthen the legs for upward motion— something all of the squats, lunges, etc don’t address. Especially important to strengthen the legs so they can accommodate four pounds of snowshoe/winter-boot attached to each foot. I do a high knee motion on the top of the step and single-legged Romanian deadlift to provide more upward motion. Also, without weights, I hang from a bar and slowly raise/lower legs.

2/2 I do the leg exercises 3X/week. Between those days, I mix it ...

2/2 I do the leg exercises 3X/week. Between those days, I mix it up with core, cycling, and/or long brisk walks. Average 5X/week doing something physical. This program has paid good benefits— with my most strenuous mountaineering— snowshoeing to a mountain summit with a heavy backpack — I get my second wind on the ascents and my legs maintain strength throughout. The knees still complain toward the end of the descent, but that’s ok.

1/2 My hike training has significantly evolved. I’ve experimented to see what works best for me.
I used to do a walk/run workout with a weighted backpack, but that aggravated my knees. I’m now having success with a resistance training focused on the legs— high step (platform), single- and two-legged squats, forward lunges, single-legged Romanian dead lift, and Bulgarian split squat— all with weights— ankle weights and weight belt with dumbbells added for several of them.

I took some young family members for their first river hike today. Along the way, we spotted this massive snapping turtle sunning itself on a log. We all stopped and stood in awe of its size. The entire hike was a lot of fun, filled with discovery, but I’m afraid that this hike set the “bar” quite high— the children might expect to see this turtle every time now! 😀🐢 #hiking #nature #wildlife

When asked yesterday what I wanted to do on my birthday-- and I was told that I could do anything I wanted-- I responded quickly with "I want to start the day hiking on my favorite local trail, followed by canoeing on a nearby lake. I then want to end the day by having dinner on the beach at the ocean as the sun sets". Birthday wish granted! Had a terrific day yesterday!! Thanks, Richard! While I hiked up this steep section, I did think a lot about the steep routes that you lead. This was not as steep as what I have seen on your posts— this was mostly class 2 with several very short stretches of class 3. I was also assessing what this would be like to snowshoe this coming winter. The ascent would be much more doable via snowshoe than a descent.

The hike last Friday had a long stretch of fun scrambling up steep rock slabs. It was accented by beautiful waterfalls that I climbed along. The upper right pic shows the base of one of the climbs and the lower right pic is a view looking down near the top of another climb. The section was 4,600 ft (1,400m) long with a vertical gain of 1,500 ft (450m) and an average grade of 33%. Fun!! #MountainMonday #hiking #nature

Just now arrived in the White Mountains, NH. Will be hiking tomorrow. This is a different mountain range (Presidential) from what I’ve spent most of the last 6+ years in. As much as I enjoyed the other ranges (most in Pemigewasset Wilderness), I’m looking to try out new trails. Keeping it simple on the first several trips— plan to day-hike as many different trails as possible, enjoying the new area plus scouting for good (future) primitive camping and snowshoeing. Good luck with Garmin support— in my most recent encounter, I was initially receiving misinformation from the email communications (was this AI?). Then I called their phone number to speak directly with a human and learned nothing. I asked the person directly why he couldn’t answer my question, and he said that all support people there are only given access to the same manual that I had in front of me. They are not allowed access to info beyond the manual. Very frustrating.

This area had a different underwater landscape than the one shown in my earlier post; the seafloor was much more gently sloping. Two of the islands that I sailed to had small rock islands near them. Once the sailboat was tied up at each main island, I then took the dinghy to the nearby rock island to scuba dive. Here are pics from below the surface as I dived around one of those rock islands. It’s a different world underwater! #ocean #scuba

I returned last night from a wonderful trip to the British Virgin Islands. Spent a week on a sailboat, sailing to four islands, and snorkeling and scuba diving off of two of them. The weather cooperated nicely and I thoroughly enjoyed the warm clear water!! More pics to come! #sailing #ocean #scuba

The lone frog that is now entering its fifth year in my backyard pond finally "warmed" up to me today and allowed me to get to a 20 ft (6m) distance for a pic before it quickly disappeared beneath the surface of the water. The sun is out, making everything warm-- a great day for a frog!

Wow-- it wasn't that long ago that this lake and the ones near it were frozen solid and I was snowshoeing through the surrounding forest on a deep layer of snow. Even snowshoed a bit on one of the lakes. Spring has definitely arrived here-- had a nice hike today in this forest, looping around this lake. A great day to be out! #hiking #nature #photography

What a coincidence-- when I'm out in the wilderness, I also think what would Franz or JDS (npub1eqq…rukl) do here? Yes, I've definitely been hitting the summits on snowshoes lately, but also have done exactly what you did today-- "just" going to a nice spot and returning. For example, sometimes making waterfalls or a scenic outlook the destination, not the summit. It's all about the experience! 😀
