I travel through Pearson a lot for work and its misery. I used to use Billy Bishop and it was a pleasure: less wait, less walking, less cascading delays, easier checkin, etc.

Any direction you fly out of Pearson is used/populated, only one side for Billy Bishop. A high % of folks with hop in/out of cars at Pearson, few at Billy Bishop who will opt for public transport.

I have a detached garage and I need to add wired (cameras, power relays) and wireless connectivity (garage openers).

It's about 40ft/12m from the house to the garage.

Should I use a point-to-point wireless bridge from the house to the garage + switch + AP or an outdoor wireless access point on the house + wifi-to-wired bridge + switch?

I'm concerned about #yeg weather (-40c + snow) interference and I use Ubiquiti stuff. Any thoughts?

The central laptop would be used for interactive work: web browsing, coding, drafting documents, etc. I want two external monitors setup in portrait mode flanking each side.

The laptop should have a single cord that manages power and accessories. When “undocked” from the desk (yank the cord) the terminal sessions from the e-ink tablets become windowed terminal sessions. Maybe these e-ink devices are serial over Bluetooth? IDK.

I keep thinking about what my dream/fantasy workstation would look like. This may be impractical but…

I want a series of small, tablet-sized e-ink devices in different colours. Each one should be able to legibly show a TUI. These are mostly used non-interactively, but should be able to take over keyboard input from the central laptop. These would show things like email, calendar, alerts, and other miscellaneous flows of incoming info. No creation on these devices.

Doing some household engineering this weekend. I have a cabinet I want to install a pull out rack to hold several cast iron pans (read: heavy).

Problem is that there is hard-to-move electrical box in the way.

I think what I want to do is install an inverted L bracket on the sidewall of the cabinet that support onside of the rack and use #3dPrinting to make some risers on the other. It should be about 6-7" off the cabinet floor.

Am I nuts? Any other ideas?

In #yeg, we have a similar numbered street/avenue grid naming scheme to Tucson. We tend to use “Road” for diagonal… er vehicular paths (Argyll, Fort, Groat, Connors, etc.) but not exclusively (Jasper Ave, Kingsway Ave, Park Dr, and many numbered streets/aves).

My son won’t eat much fruit. We found these little bags of freeze dried strawberries and he *loves* them. He likes the crunch.

Problem is they come in tiny bags, aren’t easy to find, go out of stock often, and they have a fair bit of added sugar. We couldn’t find a local source, but no problem: the internet has everything.

IIRC PLA isn’t terrible at chemical resistance (the primary solvent is unusual enough that no one chemically smooths it), but bathroom cleaners can be harsh.

I’d you use steam cleaning for your bathroom though, expect deformation. Domestic hot water should be fine though.

Crack sealing is a giant pain and increases the size in hard to control ways. So if it fits nicely together now, it won’t after.

In my kitchen I have an awkward triangular space so I’m making some pull out bins.

These bins will exceed my printing volume. The plan is to print out the front and corners but use another materials for the large, flat planes.

I’m debating between using 1/4” Baltic Birch or coroplast. Coroplast will be cheaper and easier to cut accurately but I’m unsure of fastening it to the other parts. Ply is $ but stronger and easy to use screws, etc.

I made this satisfying #3dPrinting project a couple of weekends ago.

I have a pair of sleek Pugeot Isen salt/pepper grinders. They work great but definitely a frustration object trying to fill. The salt/pepper needs to go into the centre hole only and if anything gets into the outer channel, you have to pick it out.

So, I measured it up and spent 20 minutes in #OpenSCAD then 20 minutes on the printer for a perfect fit into the outer channel.

For years I’ve worked in the software business, specifically databases. You see a lot of DB companies because people that run DBs have a budget to buy stuff.

Developers (those who write code primarily) almost never have budget. So, 90% of a DB products users might be devs, but they market to the operations folks who have budgets.

Now, suddenly with AI, developers have budgets (big ones)?? This all feels like fiction all around.

I don't believe there are any Pizza Hut Classics in Canada but man, I really want to go back to a dine-in Pizza Hut that hasn't been blandified.

For a true Pizza Hut experience it must a) have a cocktail table arcade machine and b) 4 watt incandescent light bulbs over the table with no other lighting.

[Also, the BBSes in my hometown used to have meet ups at the local Pizza Hut. Great times.]

One of my best #3dPrinting hacks is to release prints with my freezer (or outside in the Canadian winter).

It's amazing how will release when you drop it an -18c (0f) box. Prints _always_ release cleanly, even the finest details.

I'm kind of pondering about building a heated bed with Peltier junctions though. Think about it: use it to heat the bed then reverse the polarity and cool the bed down to release the print.

There is a slicer but I suspect it's not as baked as 'normal' slicers.

IMHO Slicers are the weak point of 3D printing generally.

Developing a good slicer is expensive, time consuming and hard to monetize.

Related: Belt printers have been around for years but the horrible slicer support makes them not nice to use. I have one and I don't use it because of IdeaMaker is my only option.

As far as the build collisions, that’s just a slicer thing really to prevent it and add supports (super raft?) as needed.

No doubt that these stories are real, but how they broke containment makes me wonder if there are skilled PR folks by the industry intentionally letting/enabling it to circulate.

I don't doubt that “AI psychosis” is real but think about this from a promoter:

“I can’t be responsible, I was sick and under the spell. We didn’t understand the danger. Now we do and I'm healing.”

It is the perfect out. These promoters can be absolved from responsibility/liability. Some investments will be worthless (probably not their own money) but their judgement? Intact. They move on.

I’m starting to see an uptick in mainstream news about how LLMs/“AI” are wearing thin. We might be near a crest.

However, I’m thinking back to the last BS flood: crypto. Many promoters jumped from one to the other seamlessly. Others hid/downplayed their ties and went ‘legit’.
This time, it’s going to be harder and uglier to move on.

It got me thinking… how many promoters, after the flood, are going to claim some variation on “AI psychosis” to back down from their association with AI?

Jazzband, the #python/(heavily #django) OSS group is shutting down due to, among other things, AI slop.

GitHub’s slopocalypse – the flood of AI-generated spam PRs and issues – has made Jazzband’s model of open membership and shared push access untenable”
This model underpinned a lot of that ecosystem. I have to wonder what happens to several of these projects.
