We need more L2 software, software that interacts with Bitcoin and lives symbiotically with it.

There are some lightweight ones like the EPS (which still requires Core): https://github.com/chris-belcher/electrum-personal-server

The problem reduces to this: you're asking a potentially adversarial server to tell you your address balances. At which point the server knows what addresses you're interested in and therefore likely belong to "you" (they may not know who you are though).

Do this with a wallet that contains clean coinjoin outputs and you've just undone all your coinjoins.

AFAIK Sparrow isn't a good tool here because it uses public Electrum servers by default, thereby negating any benefits that its coinjoin feature provides.

At best Tor will keep your IP private but all your addresses are correlated as belonging to the same entity the moment you connect.

Never use Electrum unless you're hosting your own backend. There is no telling how many public Electrum servers are run by chain analysis companies and other adversaries that are in the business of attributing IP addresses to UTXOs.

Electrum was a great piece of software 10 years ago, but the surveillance landscape has changed a lot since then and it is not really safe to use it in its default state.

TLDR: run your own Electrum backend or don't use Electrum.

This is meant for situations where Core isn't available or where you have serious privacy concerns.

Think mobile and desktop wallets that need to send out a set of transaction quickly and privately. Core is a massive dependency with a long bootstrap time and not available in many situations.

Only new entrants pay mining fees. Remixers ride free forever both in terms of coordinator fees and mining fees. It doesn't matter if it's your first remix or your 1000th. It's virtually free *in the long run*, not on a one off basis obviously. That's just math.

If I have a UTXO and I want to raise its anonset to 1000, which is cheaper: Wasabi which will probably require me to do 20 rounds and charge me for each, or Whirlpool which will require 200 rounds but charge only for the first one?

The recent removal of Damus from the Apple AppStore in Hong Kong isn't necessarily a political problem.

Apple created a phone experience so slick that their market share is simply too big and people ultimately don't care about being walled in as long as the experience is smooth.

The root of the problem is:

1) no one else seems to be able to create a comparable phone experience (Android is junk unfortunately),

2) open source / privacy community has tried it several times with Linux etc. but it never works out due to how much money is needed to build a good device.

If the barrier to entry into the phone market was lower, we'd have more competition and less shenanigans like walled gardens. The state could still regulate app stores using traditional legislation but sideloading an alternate app store solves that problem.

TLDR: building a good phone that people like is still expensive and hard.

However, Whirlpool is much cheaper the longer you mix. If you mix indefinitely, the price per anonset tends to zero. The Wasabi model never offers this.

As for your second assertion, having more pools doesn't lead to less privacy. Privacy is solely a function of anonymity sets, it has nothing to do with pool sizes.

Anyway, since I'm not affiliated with Whirlpool and I'm not on their payroll, you should ask them directly about some of their design decisions.

Game theory says you have to do it in a publicly visible and provable way (coinjoins are very visible on the blockchain) in order to be able to say "After participating in N rounds my anonymity set is X and there's no point in trying to link me or any other participants to any particular UTXO in rounds 0..N-1. You can try but you can never prove a particular link".

If you do it privately using LN or other methods, you can end up receiving a "bad" (tracked) UTXO that will land you in trouble if you sell it on a KYC platform. Conversely, you could end up giving up your good KYCd UTXO to a "bad" party who will then use it for nefarious purposes and guess who will be getting a visit from the authorities in that situation. If you coinjoin, a rational opponent has to say "This peer clearly coinjoined with 50 other participants, so in order to prosecute him we'd have to prosecute everyone from that round".

Re Whirlpool vs Wasabi, WP is actually a lot cheaper in the long run (per anonset) because they charge only for the initial round. After that every subsequent round is free, indefinitely. Wasabi may be cheaper only for smaller anonsets.

What if just 1-5% of their nukes hit their target?

I don't want my family to die in a nuclear winter. Something tells me you probably feel the same way, even if the chance of that happening is just 1%. You panicked pretty hard after you got swatted.

What's the chance that once governments realize they can't control and censor the content on Nostr, that they go after app stores instead? There's a precedent for doing just that. While it wouldn't hurt the PC segment, it'd hurt the mobile segment quite a bit.

Or you can set up a Dojo on your own computer. Whereas your coordinator interacts with Chainalysis no matter what.

Would you be so kind as to answer my question from the other post, about why you chose to plug into Chainalysis in the first place. Was there external pressure? Why are you guys so evasive about it?

Coinjoin solutions that plug into Chainalysis and preemptively blacklist UTXOs are working against you. They purport to protect your privacy while selling you out to oligarchs, bureaucrats and a class of people that wants to enslave you.

Wasabi devs should be ashamed of themselves, especially since nobody approached them to start doing that -- they simple lost their nerve and submitted of their own accord, out of fear. If you're afraid, don't offer such platforms in the first place. Or do a better job of protecting your anonymity as a privacy dev.

https://twitter.com/SamouraiWallet/status/1539618567276093441

After that, they can rely solely on SPV or Compact Block Filters in order to interact.

And they don't even need to rely on on-chain notifications since they can connect out-of-band via email, Nostr or any other communication medium.

In that sense, the featureset of 351 is strictly a superset of what SP offers and therefore superior.

Another downfall of SP is that it isn't even a standard. It's a stream of consciousness in a GitHub gist, without a real spec or reference implementation.

Most rely either on centralized backends or some kind of SPV/Neutrino system.

BIP351 gives you the ability to run your own notification scanner if you're paranoid, but in practice most users can rely on a few high profile scanners and cross check them for honesty.

It needs full block data. The theory behind the standard is sound but in practice you need to support light clients or you won't find adoption.

BIP351 elegantly solved that problem by outsourcing notification scanning. Worst case scenario (you don't trust anyone), you run your own notification scanner. Most people will trust a few high profile notification repos or the one run by their mobile wallet vendor.
