Hello! I'm Hong Minhee (洪民憙), an open source software engineer in my late 30s, living in Seoul, Korea. I'm bisexual and non-binary (they/them), and an enthusiastic advocate of free/open source software and the fediverse.

I work full-time on Fedify: ActivityPub server framework (npub1tlf…wz08), an ActivityPub server framework in TypeScript, funded by @sovtechfund@mastodon.social. I'm also the creator of Hollo :hollo: (npub1mz3…tpw7), a single-user ActivityPub microblog; BotKit by Fedify :botkit: (npub1sql…0z0c), an ActivityPub bot framework; [Hackers' Pub], a fediverse platform for software developers; and [LogTape], a logging library for JavaScript and TypeScript.

I have a long interest in East Asian languages (CJK) and Unicode. I'm writing this in English.

Not because English is my first language—it isn't. I'm writing this in English because if I wrote it in Korean, the people I'm addressing would run it through an outdated translator, misread it, and respond to something I never said. The responsibility for that mistranslation would fall on me. It always does.

This is the thing [Eugen Rochko's post][1] misses, despite its good intentions.

Eugen Rochko (npub1vl7…f6g0) argues that LLMs are no substitute for human translators, and that people who think otherwise don't actually rely on translation. He's right about some of this. A machine-translated novel is not the same as one rendered by a skilled human translator. But the argument rests on a premise that only makes sense from a certain position: that translation is primarily about *quality*, about the aesthetic experience of reading literature in another language.

For many of us, translation is first about *access*.

The professional translation market doesn't scale to cover everything. It never has. What gets translated—and into which languages—follows the logic of cultural hegemony. Works from dominant Western languages flow outward, translated into everything. Works from East Asian languages trickle in, selectively, slowly, on someone else's schedule. The asymmetry isn't incidental; it's structural.

Eugen Rochko (npub1vl7…f6g0) notes, fairly, that machine translation existed decades before LLMs. But this is only half the story, and which half matters depends entirely on which languages you're talking about. European language pairs were reasonably serviceable with older tools. Korean–English, Japanese–English, Chinese–English? Genuinely usable translation for these pairs arrived with the LLM era. Treating “machine translation” as a monolithic technology with a uniform history erases the experience of everyone whose language sits far from the Indo-European center.

There's also something uncomfortable in the framing of the button-press thought experiment: “I would erase LLMs even if it took machine translation with it.” For someone whose language has always been peripheral, that button looks very different. It's not an abstract philosophical position; it's a statement about whose access to information is expendable.

I want to be clear: none of this is an argument that LLMs are good, or that the harms Eugen Rochko (npub1vl7…f6g0) describes aren't real. They are. But a critique of AI doesn't become more universal by ignoring whose languages have always been on the margins. If anything, a serious critique of AI's political economy should be *more* attentive to those asymmetries, not less.

The fact that I'm writing this in English, carefully, so it won't be misread—that's not incidental to my argument. That *is* my argument.

Machine translations are often brought up as a gotcha whenever I criticize LLMs. It's worth pointing out two things: Machine translations existed decades before LLMs, and yes, machine translations are useful. However: I would never in my life read a machine translated book. Understanding what a social media post is talking about in rough terms? Sure. Literature? Absolutely not. - Edit pages on other instances with your home account
- Fork pages across instances: `[[Page@instance-a.wiki]]` → `[[Page@instance-b.wiki]]`, sharing edit history up to the fork point
* Merge forked pages later when needed

The fork/merge model feels natural for federated collaboration. Thoughts?

We spent the day contributing to various #fediverse open source projects including Fedify: ActivityPub server framework (npub1tlf…wz08), Hollo :hollo: (npub1mz3…tpw7), and [Hackers' Pub]. It was fantastic to see the community come together to build and improve tools for the decentralized social web.

This resonates deeply for South Korea too. 🇰🇷 Our public services shouldn't depend on centralized platforms like Naver, Kakao, or Instagram for critical communications.

Projects like Fedify: ActivityPub server framework (npub1tlf…wz08) and BotKit by Fedify :botkit: (npub1sql…0z0c) could enable our government agencies to build ActivityPub-native services with minimal effort—imagine following <ruby lang="ko">災難安全文字<rp>(</rp><rt>재난안전문자</rt><rp>)</rp></ruby> (emergency alerts) or local traffic updates directly in your fediverse timeline!

Not just convenient, but a matter of information sovereignty. What government communications would you want to follow in the fediverse?

Very similar to how #Ghost works (built-in to core). Followable anywhere on the social web. Bus route updates, water restriction updates, weather alerts...one domain per municipality, difft accts per agency.

Just received word that Fedify: ActivityPub server framework (npub1tlf…wz08) wasn't selected for NLnet (npub1n8y…l96n)'s Open Call this round. While disappointing, I understand the competition was fierce with many worthy projects seeking limited funding.

The journey continues though—#Fedify development will move forward at its own pace. Thanks to everyone who's shown interest and support for this project so far. Building tools for the #fediverse remains important work, and I'm committed to seeing it through.

If you know of other funding opportunities that might be a good fit for open source #ActivityPub tools, I'm all ears.

I've been reflecting lately on projects like Fedify: ActivityPub server framework (npub1tlf…wz08), Hollo :hollo: (npub1mz3…tpw7), and @botkit@hollo.social. Sometimes I wonder if I'm solving problems that very few people actually need solved. How many developers truly want to build their own #ActivityPub server from scratch?

It feels a bit like inventing shoes that let people walk on their hands all day. Would there be a viable market? How many would actually buy them?

That's the sense I get with these projects. They do have users who find them tremendously valuable, but the total user base is inherently limited. The tools serve an important function for a small audience of specialized developers.

There are moments when my motivation wavers. When the user community consists of just a handful of enthusiastic supporters, it's sometimes difficult to maintain momentum and justify the ongoing investment of time and energy.

And yet, there's something meaningful about creating specialized tools that solve complex problems well, even if they're only used by a few. Perhaps that's enough.

I wanted to share some feedback on the documentation provided in the [*Highlighting Journalism on Mastodon*](https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2024/07/highlighting-journalism-on-mastodon/) blog post.

Specifically, in [*The technical*](https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2024/07/highlighting-journalism-on-mastodon/#the-technical) section, the example code for the `fediverse:creator` meta tag is given as:

Based on my testing (and that of others), Mastodon doesn't seem to recognize the creator link correctly when the leading `@` is present in the `content` attribute. It only works when the `@` is removed, like this:

```

Following the blog's example directly led to some wasted time figuring out why it wasn't working. It would be great if either the example in the blog post could be corrected to reflect the current requirement, or if Mastodon's parser could be made more flexible to accept the handle with or without the leading `@`.
