What gets me about Swedish stereotypes is how we're apparently seen as pretty alien, to the point where there's an actual recognized type of alien in UFOlogy that's just "looks vaguely nordic".

The stereotypes applied to us aren't particularly negative in the grand scheme of things (if anything we have a reputation of being cozy and progressive that's entirely unearned) and they aren't particularly inaccurate in the grand scheme of things either (sure, I had a US friend who was under the impression that Amsterdam is a Swedish city, but at least he got the continent right, which is more than some countries get), but at least in my limited experience, Swedish stereotypes in particular seem especially surreal.

Sometimes it feels like foreigners don't quite know what to make of Sweden and they are willing to believe just about anything could go down here.

I was rewatching Equestria Girls: Friendship Games and there's a scene where high school AU Twilight Sparkle gets caught with his pet dog at school and she explains she's simply "doing a study on human-canine cohabitation", and the teacher let her keep the dog.

She basically just said "me having a dog at school is okay because I'm trying to see if I can get away with having a dog at the school."

Scenario: You are building up to an exciting finale but haven't locked in the ending yet, you go on social media and see a bunch of people correctly guessing the ending you had in mind. Do you

a) completely rewrite the ending to something no one has guessed in order to keep the ending surprising or

b) stay the course, maybe incorporate some of the best ideas from peoples speculations if you're feeling cheeky

Disco Elysium is part of a subgenre of detective stories that I dont think has been fully codified despite there being a number of examples, but if I had to give it a name I'd call it holistic detective stories as the ur-example is Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency by Douglas Adams. Other examples are Alan Moore's From Hell and Twin Peaks.

The central premise of stories in this genre is typically that the case being investigated is merely the symptom of a larger existential illness and in order to solve the case, the detective must also unravel the society around the case and even reality itself.

Consequently, the detectives of these kinds of stories tend to be VERY eccentric, even by the standards of detective stories, as they need to be in tune with things like synchronicity and outright dream logic to make headway.

The best litmus test for if you are in a holostic detective story is if "do drugs about it" ever seems like a reasonable method of getting a lead for an ostensibly professional detective.

The version of this I'd like to see is a slice of life manga where basically every chapter is just arriving at some quaint small town and the people the protagonist bumps into along the way (and maybe an overarching plot point like the only available volume #1 is with this cute girl and childhood friend who refuses to lend it to the heroine because of some bad experience in the past where she lent her a book and it got destroyed, and there's this complex evolving relationship between the two as the childhood friend sees the heroine lovingly build up this collection of books and start warming up to her until eventually in the final chapters she agrees to let her borrow the first volume. By that point, she's already just found another copy of volume 1 elsewhere, so the issue is kind of moot, but the gesture is appreciated anyway and that ends up being what tips their friendship over to romance).

What I think would actually be made is a ludicrously over the top fighting manga where it turns out there's a small group of martial artists after the same volumes and in order to find them all the hero must master every fighting technique and probably there's an evil book collector out there that is somehow going to use an obscure 80s yuri manga to open up a portal to the shadow dimension and destroy the world. I know there is something like that out there already, but about people fighting over half-priced nearly expired food (I don't remember exactly when this manga was made, but you can pretty much tell by the premise it would've been somewhere in the Lost Decades era when the japanese economy was doing just fine with no major issues whatsoever 😅 )

I was at IKEA today and they had multiple snowy owl plushies with Hogwarts acceptance letters up as decoration. Y'know, in case you where afraid that the company owning the rights to trans girls favorite plush meant they wheren't basically condoning transphobia.

This isn't neceserily on the level of "you need to boycott ikea", for all I know it's just this one store, but it is enough to illustrate that corporations are not your friends. It's a remarkably consistent thing that people will describe their ideal social media and they will basically be describing Mastodon, but they'll react with hostility if you as much as mention mastodon (or, more likely, they'll pre-emptively discount Mastodon before it's even entered the conversation... oh and you could try suggesting other fedi software but chances are they'll stare at you blankly or simply consider it more Mastodon.)

I literally saw someone be like "can we make our own non-mastodon bluesky server with blackjack and hookers?" and like that's mastodon, they are describing mastodon. If you want something that fits the basic description of Mastodon but isn't called Mastodon, I have great news about the fediverse.

When it comes to politics, one of the more frustrating things to navigate is "okay, when you say antisemitism, do you mean antisemitism or do you mean 'not supporting Israel in its genocide of Palestinians?"

Cus it's not like the nazis have gone anywhere, but there are so many politicians, including word leaders who wilfully conflates "antisemitism" with "not supporting Israel" even though some of the biggest critics of Israel are holocaust survivors and children of holocaust survivors who have seen genocide by an attempted ethnostate play out once before and they wont accept it just because different people are waving different flags this time.

And the thing is, it's not actually hard to navigate, you can tell right at a glance if someones opposition to zionism comes from a principled opposition to genocide in all forms or from the laughably incorrect belief that "zionism" means some sort of world domination scheme.

But it is frustrating because of how relentless it is, how you're constantly being forced to prove you don't hate jewish people even as you're dealing with an institution that absolutely despises jewish people who don't share their nationalistic and genocidal political goals.

Nothing that Israel has been doing to Palestinians have been acceptable, it's hard to properly convey the scale of the atrocities. However bad you think it is, the reality is worse.

And yeah it is very easy to hate people who are willing and capable of doing this to fellow human beings, which is where the antisemitism accusations come from in the first place but the category of "willing and capable of committing genocide" does not contain all jews. It does not contain most jews, on average they are probably less likely to think genocide is a good idea for obvious historical reasons.

And there are plenty of non-jewish people supporting Israel, either for their own religious reasons or just cus they are in the murder business and is on the side of whomever is currently murdering more people.

The moral stance on this issue is crystal clear, don't support genocide no matter who's doing it. Don't let anyone try and muddy the waters.
