ASEAN is leading the data centre front in the Muslim World, its the link between South East Asia and Middle East that is missing. My point is mostly cultural, exploring trend formation for masses and how elites can be nurtured so those links can be made. Technological development within Islamicate is fractured regardless of government structures, cyberspace was imposed on despots whether they like or not. To extend their rule they have begun to militarily migrating away from GAE, example: egypt-china, saudi-china arms deals. Time will defeat incompetent regimes, but thats a seperate, geopolitical point. What I'm wondering is more on the enactments of cyberculture in these societies and how they can be edited using technologies such as Nostr. We have benefits in Nostr that can circumvent governmental control for the time being.

The world’s biggest infrastructure booms throigh history have all been built around something simple yet incredibly important:

Land.

The cloud needs land. That remains the least cloudlike fact about the machine age. Intelligence arrives as a voice in the browser, an assistant in the workflow, a model behind an API, a camera watching the road, a tutor beside the child. It feels frictionless because we meet it as interface. Then the interface asks for power, cooling, fibre, chips, water, land, substations.

Before the machine age becomes civilisation it becomes an infrastructure stack.

Artificial intelligence is a new medium resting on very old limitations: electricity, ports, cables, land use, money, labour, bureaucracy, water. Every new medium selects a human type. Print selected readers, clerks, reformers, bureaucrats, national publics and people who could live inside texts. Broadcast selected mass audiences, performers, propagandists and leaders who could speak into one national ear, having the ability to lull the general populace from fascism to republicism with one good speech. The internet selected users, posters, lurkers, trolls, influencers, coders, platform citizens and people who learned to live by links. The mobile internet selected the always-reachable person: the driver, courier, livestreamer, small merchant, group-chat operator, app-mediated self.
                 AI will select too.
It will select people who can work inside loops: observe, ask, retrieve, simulate, test, decide, revise, publish, call another model, bring another person in, and move again before the old institution has convened its meeting. It will select people who can form relations with machines without surrendering judgment to them. It will select people who can metabolise a flood of synthetic intelligence and still know what matters. It will also select flatter, more anxious, more performative types: people whose intelligence becomes prompt management, whose desire is routed by recommendation, whose memory is outsourced, whose confidence depends on machine fluency, whose loneliness is made conversational.

This is why the question has moved beyond who controls AI. It is what kind of human being the AI medium makes easier.

The empires understand this, even if they do not say it so plainly. China sees the machine age through industrial chains, engineers, platforms, state capacity and the Party’s old imperial fear of disorder. America sees it through frontier labs, capital markets, cloud empires, defence procurement, university pipelines, security doctrine and a libertarian temptation to exit the failed state into a better-designed startup republic. Both want to build the machine world. Both want to shape the people who can live inside it. Both, in different ways, dream of completion. None can encapsulate the American AI dream as Peter Thiel, who earlier this month invested Panthalassa a Portland-based startup aiming to building AI compute nodes that generate electricity from ocean waves and transmit data back to land via satellite. The company is attempting to address a major roadblocks the AI industry is facing:
               Energy and Water
The International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates that global data center electricity use will more than double by 2030. That’s like adding another Japan to the global grid.

In the United States alone, it’s estimated that data center power demand could triple from 2023 to 2028. [1] And that’s creating a serious bottleneck for the AI industry [2]. Modern AI data centers require enormous amounts of electricity, but also water, land and cooling infrastructure. And while companies can build new AI models relatively quickly, the physical systems needed to support them take longer to scale. New transmission lines can take years to approve and construct. Power plants can take even longer. Meanwhile, utilities across the country are suddenly being asked to support electricity demand they didn’t expect to see for another decade. That’s forcing technology companies to think differently about where the energy they need will come from. Microsoft and Amazon are backing nuclear projects to help power future AI infrastructure, while Google is exploring advanced geothermal energy. All three of these companies and Meta are signing massive renewable power agreements to secure long-term electricity supply [3] In other words, the AI race is no longer just about building better models. It’s increasingly about securing enough infrastructure to run them at the expense of public energy needs. Panthalassa is taking that idea to its logical extreme; seeking to solve AI's most complex puzzle yet: water. To circumvent the limits of land, Panthalassa is seeking to convert tidal energy to electricity to power AI's increasing energy demands. Building oceanic infrastructure has proven to be difficult due to the high fluctations of generation and costly maintenance. The high mechanical and electrical loads of data centre requires a supply that steady and reliable, a load so heavy that it becomes a ecological catastrophe to supply just half of the daily load.

Water, the very thing that propelled the US to naval supremacy, is now begnning to shape a world where a multipolarity is a necessity. This is where GAE needs to adapt not necessarily to continue dominance but to salvage whats left.

Land forces empires to expand through various means through ports, trade, war or even cultivating relationships, water however, forces the empire to navigate through complex geographical realities to achieve colonial objectives. Narrow shipping routes and island chains need a military strategy that prove to be too costly to maintain and therefore forces an empire to divert away from achieving colonial objectives through military means. See East Asia with Japan and the Philippines heading a joint attempt at reshaping East Asia's maritime border to reduce reliance on TMSC infrastructure and limit the expansion of Chinese infrastructure stack.

Meanwhile, the department of state declaration of a 'Pax Silica' is indicative of GAE intention. Rather than building to expand, its machine infrastrutuce is building to maintain. Empires annouce colonial intention through phrases such as “alliance for progress,” “partnership for peace,” “coalition of the willing," "the free world", in no mood for euphemisms, GAE seeks to reimagine itself as a successor of Roman Imperialism, by outright adopting latin terms 'Pax' it is seeking to develop it own network of petty kings in the Western Hemisphere. As it sees everything within this geographical location as home turf, seeking to contain rather than expand. As always God knows best.

I haven't come across his predictions on Turkey yet but thanks I'll look into it! Turkey's work is dependant on whether they survive Post Erdogan in my opinion, which I'm not very optimistic. As Europe begins to splinter away from American militarily, the Turkish industrial complex is starting to fill that void. With Italy and Spain signing defence agreements with Turkey, Europe is slowly turning to low cost Turkish tech, over time the Europeans and Americans will want to push Turkey to a confrontation with Russia, fully stretching its policy of wanting to be a middle power.

This seemingly black and white comparison fails somewhat when talking about submarine capabilities, with the rivarly being a lot more balanced. Whilst the US holds the edge in stealth, sensor technology and total nuclear powered subs, Russia excels in speed, heavy weaponry and most importantly speed of modernisation. This along with nuclear capability gives Russia the capability of striking the economic centers of the imperium at will.

America's military strength is great no doubt, but its Russia's ability to compete through a different mode of production that suits its own identity, not just through a blind process of copy and paste. GAE built its military and internet infrastructure to maintain presence in its oversees territories, a country like Russia builds for speed and camoflage.

The Twelvers knew that they could never compete with Uncle Sam's air power, so they didn't bother with developing significant fighter jets, still we see Iran challenge the US aerial dominance through the varied use of missiles, drones and air defense. Rather than a top-down, bloc-wide network, ASEAN is experiencing a shift toward "digital sovereignty" that aligns with China's technological footprint in the region.

The ASEAN approach can be broken down in key aspects:

• Data Sovereignty and Localisation: Countries such as Indonesia and Vietnam have implemented or are planning data localization regulations requiring data to be stored locally, which limits the free flow of information. • Chinese Tech Influence: Through the Digital Silk Road, China is actively building digital infrastructure, setting technology standards, and providing 5G technology and undersea fiber optic cables to Southeast Asian nations. Which would result in technical standards that are incompatible with non-Chinese systems. Distancing away from Chinese systems to localised infrastructures will be a challenge that will materialise in the distant future. • Unlike China, ASEAN is not a monolithic entity. Its members have varying degrees of openness, with some, like Cambodia and Laos, more closely aligned with Chinese digital infrastructure, while others, like Singapore and Indonesia , try to navigate a middle more localised path.

While there is no "ASEAN Firewall," the combination of data localization, adoption of Chinese technical standards, and a focus on "digital sovereignty" is contributing to a more fractured, or "splintered," digital environment.

As China exports its technology, Chinese standards seamlessly become embedded into the technological matrix of the recipient country, often furthered by standard harmonization requirements and memoranda of understanding (MOUs). Moreover, once a market builds a digital network using Chinese technology, they are more likely to continue using Chinese tech in the future; technology from other countries would likely use non-Chinese, and hence incompatible, standards.

A SAIF Indonesia?

However, Indonesia's Hybrid Splinter approach is yielding a different result when compared to other ASEAN states. Indonesia recognises that reliance on China in cyberspace would cause a net deficit in sovereignty over the long term.

Indonesia is actively developing characteristics of a splinternet driven by a national strategy for digital sovereignty, data localization, and strict content regulation. While not completely separating from the global internet like China's "Great Firewall," Indonesia is creating a more controlled, inward-looking digital environment:

• Data Localization Requirements: Indonesia has implemented regulations requiring digital companies and platforms to store and process data within the country, aiming to ensure "data sovereignty". • Strict Regulatory Control: The Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Kominfo) actively censors or blocks sites, including major platforms like Stream or PayPal (previously, due to registration issues), and often frames regulation as protection against illegal, provocative, or gambling content. • "Digital Sovereignty" Strategy: The government is shifting from being a passive consumer of foreign technology to mandating local standards and technologies, such as the Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS), and pushing for local data centers.

• Cybersecurity Concerns: Increased digital inter-connectivity has raised security concerns, leading to stricter government controls over network infrastructure, including a "Digital Nusantara Initiative" to unify fragmented, siloed government digital systems.

While Indonesia aims to build a robust local digital economy (expected to be a top ASEAN player), these policies are contributing to a more balkanized, regulated, and localized internet. Indonesia has for decades ensured a geopolitical policy based on balancing interests rather than a comprising approach. With the development of QRIS as an alternative international non fiat payment system, Indonesia seeks to leverage its position by exporting a digital financial system aimed at exerting its own influence : frustrating Visa and Mastercard lobbyists within GAE Imperium. The development of QRIS is proof that ASEAN is the only part of Islamicate that is seeking to be its own active player in cyberspace, whilst the rest of Old Islamicate are rotting away in Pax Judaica software.

It is entirely possible that as ASEAN pivots in cyberspace, American policymakers may seek to cripple the region through unbelievably high sanctions or crippling trade tariffs. However, the current current modus operandi of the West seems to be reactionary.

Its best to think of cyberspace as being structured in three interdependent macro-layers. The first is the physical layer, which revolves around infrastructure that enables a network of connectivity to be established: the datacentres that host LLMs, servers and most the various types of cables used to power low voltage data cabinets to large intercontinental fibre optics controlled by nation states. The second is the logical layer: protocols, languages, information systems. And the last, the semantic or cognitive layer, refers to all the applications in direct contact with the user.

The three macro-layers have become targets for the military strategies of states. Take for example, Russia is attacking the infrastructure (physical layer) to cut off the Internet, or at least disrupt it. Additionally many accuse Russia of having redirected the Ukrainian network to its own network, with the aim of recovering data (logical layer). Finally, the Kremlin’s influence on applications in direct contact with the user (semantic layer) allows it to shape cognition.

The Ukrainian front has shown that Russia is developing its own informational sovereignty, this can be seen in various pieces of legislation issued by the Kremlin over the past decade. The law “On the creation of a sovereign Internet”, adopted in November 2019, is the most significant with regards to the Russian Splinternet RuNet.

Today, the omnipresent use of the internet and the wealth of data it generates make it a target of warfare – even a weapon. This process of militarisation of cyberspace has made it the 5th dimension of conventional warfare (the first 4 being: land, sea, sky and space). With the Splinternet formation having accelarated on three fronts (China, Russia and Iran), albeit each at varying degrees. The rise of GAE's technofeudalist was the natural course following on from the death of liberalism.

One of the most significant legacies of the Trumpian Age is the emergence of a new class of technofeudal elites who rose at the forefront of empire with a disdain of the boomer ruling class. A previous generation who have become out of touch and relics of the past. The traditional politician now finds himself regulated to a project manager role, managing and ensuring new colonial projects are available for the tech elite, whilst entreching tech giants deeper within the military industrial complex and traditional institutions see Palantir, Amazon)

As the rift between the US and Europe deepens over Ukraine and other GAE policies that aims to regionalise empire at the old continent's expense, we see Europe waking up to the fact that dependancy will lead to complete loss of sovereignty. In contrast to the US, Europe seeks to secure any semblance of sovereignty through a legislative splinternet built upon open source. An example of this has been the German state of Schleswig-Holstein which is currently in the process of a full migration away from Microsoft products in its public administration. With the UK being absorbed into GAE's central network and Russia's annexation of Ukraine into RuNet, we see that unlike the centuries of old, the rupture of empire in the 21st century is done through cyberspace as it is the arena in which war is now fought in.

Hui's cybertechnics, guiding the development of a decentralised splinternet by linking both Islam and geography whilst playing the geopolitical game of balancing between the Western and Eastern blocs will be vital at compounding digital sovereignty. Cybertechnics will invite us to think deeper as 21st Century Muslims about the relationship between the State and the Believer. Hence the Cyber Muslim has to adopt planetery thinking, finding solutions to shared global challenges. For the message of Islam was not sent to one people but to all of mankind.

Thanks! I did find it diffcult staying on here at times, NoorNode has definitely made my experiance on here more enjoyable and eagar to see it grow as more people migrate. I really appreciate what you''ve done with it, maybe you could set up an account on X encouraging people to make that jump onto the Nostr network.

I think we see the over-reliance on AI really manifest itself within STEM industries. Personally, I've seen people who use it for every email/ written corporate comms 😭.

He who loses the ability to write, eventually loses the ability to think. Traditional SM platforms do encourage shorter attention span, ones dependance on AI is a symptom of how entrenched they are in these 'fiat' apps.

These limitations on Nostr I think can provide that balance.

My relatives in Saudi were the opposite, primarily because of the value fluctuations. If it goes up they love it, if it goes down its the worst thing in the world lol. You're right, the official fatwa from 2017 still stands however, more Azhar clerics have started appearing on Egyptian TV admitting that this fatwa could be reversed because of Bitcoin's increased global adoption and the legal framework that is developing around its use and regulation.
