Sounds like she is going back to Germany, just as Malta temps start to get hotter and hotter, that's always from June onwards where the temperatures slowly creep up, to a point where they peak at daily temps of 35 - 45°c in August, then start to fall back at the end of September to the temps now.

that's quite the swing in a fortnight.

it was suggested I try a cushioned shoe, as I wear barefoot shoes, and run in five fingers, basically to give my heel some relief. So I tried my old Adidas and Mizuno running shoes, but I couldn't actually walk in them, they made my hip scream in pain, so i have a chopped down ortho insole in my 5fingers. The main issue is Immobility of my right Hip which the physio believes led to my heel injury. My last months rehab has also been daily skipping, toe walks and a hip programme

Gawd, sorry, it is far to generous to call my ongoing heel & foot rehabilitation, running.

It is more like quick hobbling, but I have to do it, to make the foot stronger, but I don't really enjoy it, I do it because it is the only way that I can get back to being able to actually do the running I enjoy,

So...I have suspended posting about it, because at the moment it is a bit, well...meh!

Morning my lovelies.

Out for my rehab run, and it was actually really nice. Whisper it quietly but the heel cushion in my V-treks actually worked very well. It did feel a little odd at first, but after a couple of Km's I found myself running more comfortably. Much more running today, and I even went down onto the tiny sandy beach its not long, but did 5 laps - back and forth, jumping over the waves, & laughing, it was a fun run.

First run after bruising my heel a few weeks ago, then taking the last 8 days off, to help it not feel like my foot had been hobbled by Annie Wilkes's sledgehammer.

Today I walked for 250m, then ran a 1km then walked 250m and repeated until I was back home, useful post injury training, not generally how I like to run, but needs must.

Just done my post run cool down Stretching and also core, so now I need of coffee.

Set a later alarm this morning, got 8hrs - got up, sorted out three hungry felinest, did a flat white for the other half, then stretched and went for my run.

Bright sunshine, 22°c, I managed to forget my running cap, and only noticed I wasn't wearing it about a km in, which meant sweat in the eyes later on, always the downside of warm running is one very moist human 😅

Good morning 🌞

Started today's run in the dark.
Wore my hydration vest, without the water bladder, but took a small soft flask with electrolytes.
The reason for the vest, is because I have clip on lights for it, which are really neat, it makes a change not to wear a headlamp.

15k - nice muddy trails and filthy puddles, the slop from Friday mornings sandy rain.
HR kept creeping up, dunno why? I didn't feel it RPE wise, perhaps I was peckish.

Birthday weekend over, 52 laps of the sun completed, my 53rd inc the very riveting shopping of paint and new curtains, done...at some I'm gonna have to do the actual decorating, and not just stare at unopened tins of crown paint.

So, after over sleeping this morning, I left in the daylight for an extremely soggy, squelch squelch, 10k trail, a nice easy steady state, aerobic run, perfect to burn off those weekend cakes.

Yes indeed spring is here, which means the early mornings are now cooler again, due to less overnight cloud cover, as well as the early morning that bring in blankets of freezing sea fog off the Med. It does slowly lift as the sun comes up. All the rain the island had in January, and February has led to an explosion of green as well as wildflowers literally everywhere, it is wonderful

I would've got this up earlier, but for chore distractions, and the hunt for two AA batteries.

First run of March, and 4th Half Marathon of 2026, essentially ran to the other half's work for a cheeky kiss, then ran around, up and over 3 unforgiving hills on the way home, after running up 1 on my way out. Not my quickest, not my slowest, but a first deciding 4 nasty gradients in 21.15km was normal.

Absolutely horrendous 40Kph westerly wind, that I was literally running into for the entirety of this accidental - deliberate half, that makes 2 HM's this month, oops.

This is actually the first Zone 2 & 3 half I've ever run, I am not breaking any records for this, but that's not the point is it, hopefully some fat was lost to the wind and the road. Polar flow says 44% fat burnt, so that's good.

Out a bit later this morning, as I extended my warmup, to include some strength training.

Today I thought a nice slow 5k along the coast out and a quicker 5k along the back lanes home and maintain a low HR.

Although the avg HR was not as low as I would've liked, my rpe checks pegged me at a good 3/4, and I did do a slow 5.7k out, and faster 5.7k home. Plus the extra bonus of a coastal red/pink dawn pre sunrise sky.

Another wet run. I don't think there has been a day this month where it hasn't rained at some point during the day, which means another wet foot run. Today, it rained from start to finish, plenty of water, mud and stones, plus road wide puddles.
I stumbled in a puddle today, the road bed I was expecting under the water had gone, but I'm ok, water cushioned my fall. I did feel a charlie going for a short swim on my easy long run 🤦

That warmth wears off after a year of living here, I remember my first warm winter, then I acclimatised to Malta summers and suddenly 15°c & 80+ % humidity in winter feels like 15 below. But, you can always put on another layer, until the sun comes out. Anyway, I really hope she has a great time, there's loads to explore, and the weather will soon clear up. Next week there's force 8 winds expected, but that's normal for here.

We don't always get storms like this week, the last biggie was in 2018, but Malta does get very windy at times, makes for some good resistance training when you run at least.

Good morning 🌄

So, my running year for 2025 comes to a close with a violent thunderstorm, hail and driving rain. While I'm happy enough running in rain, I draw the line at trying to outrun lightning.

So, I'll do a little workout after lunch, a little stretching and begin 2026 with a run instead.

At some point later, I'll post my run highlights for the year, but for now I'm just gonna watch the storm, drink another coffee and go through my 2025 data.

Thanks, I'm looking forward to using it. The old one has done alright. Maybe I'll wear both on the last run of 2025, so I can do some comparisons, and it would be nice for it to go into retirement, by seeing out the whole running year

Finally on charge...

The reason for the new running watch is my Amazfit GTR4 has big issues....both operation buttons have failed, and the battery which used to last for 3 or 4 runs and 14 days standby now lasts 3 days...whatever I do.
though I can use the watch with touch control, and putting in on charge a lot, has the added peril that if it has an issue and turns off, I can't switch it back on again.

In time I may fix it myself, but the cost of repair in Malta, is a new watch.

Herbert's 'The Fog' is excellent, also read The Rats which was his first novel written in 1974 which he followed up with Lair in 1979. I thoroughly recommend anything by Janes Herbert, but those three books helped inspire me as a young writer

There is also the novel 'The Fog' by James Herbert written in 1975, about a deadly fog that drives people mad when they come into contact with it. There is also the film The Fog by John Carpenter (better known for Halloween) which is strange glowing sea fog (so that's probably more applicable to me, I'm forever running into freezing cold sea fog in the mornings)
