The fact that Google decided to dump a 4 GiB language model file on every Chrome installation is yet another sign of how the generative AI craze is unsustainable. Don't look at it from the side of users, look at it from Google side. Having every user download a 4 GiB monster which will need to be routinely updated is a significant cost. It takes a ton of bandwidth to do that, far more than Chrome updates consume. And yet they're doing it because they're desperate to externalize the cost of "AI".

Spend that money on anything and it will fly.

You should ask yourself, why are the vibe bros obsessed with coding now? Weren't they busy trying to put artists out of work? Writers? Translators? Well, it turns out that in practically every other sector gen AI has basically become a liability. You use it hoping to save time and money, it turns into a PR disaster, you get to redo the work again, you saved nothing, you won't try again. So that's why. They're running out of options to peddle their snake oil.

https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2026-04-10/wit-studio-apologizes-for-using-generative-ai-in-opening-sequence-of-ascendance-of-a-bookworm-part-/.236271

Check the benchmarks that can't scale to tons of cores or can't leverage dedicated hardware and you'll see that they show only a ~10x speedup. 18 years, two order of magnitudes in transistor counts, hundreds of billions in hardware development and the best we can do for user-facing workloads is an order of magnitude speedup. The tech sector needs to get its act together on software quality and optimization because frankly we suck.

https://www.phoronix.com/review/intel-penryn-to-panther-lake

I've seen people claiming - with a straight face - that mechanical refactoring is a good use-case for LLM-based tools. Well, sed was developed in 1974 and - according to Wikipedia - first shipped in UNIX version 7 in 1979. On modern machines it can process files at speeds of several GB/s and will not randomly introduce errors while processing them. It doesn't cost billions, a subscription or internet access. It's there on your machine, fully documented. What are we even talking about?

Routers, printers, etc... you name it. That fancy ARM-based MacBook with RAM soldered on the CPU package? We've got plenty of crashes from those, good luck replacing that RAM without super-specialized equipment and an extraordinarily talented technician doing the job. 5/5

Keep in mind that this is not doing an extensive test of all the machine's RAM, it only checks up to 1 GiB of memory and runs for no longer than 3 seconds... and it has found lots of real issues! 4/5

If I subtract crashes that are caused by resource exhaustion (such as out-of-memory crashes) this number goes up to around 15%. This is a bit skewed because users with flaky hardware will crash more often than users with functioning machines, but even then this dwarfs all the previous estimates I saw regarding this problem. 3/5

Still, out of these ~25000 crashes have been detected as having a potential bit-flip. That's one crash every twenty potentially caused by bad/flaky memory, it's huge! And because it's a conservative heuristic we're underestimating the real number, it's probably going to be at least twice as much. 2/5

A few years ago I designed a way to detect bit-flips in Firefox crash reports and last year we deployed an actual memory tester that runs on user machines after the browser crashes. Today I was looking at the data that comes out of these tests and now I'm 100% positive that the heuristic is sound and a lot of the crashes we see are from users with bad memory or similarly flaky hardware. Here's a few numbers to give you an idea of how large the problem is. 🧵 1/5

When talking about the energy consumed by LLMs don't be fooled by arguments focusing solely on the direct power consumption of these models, because they are externalizing a lot of it. Browsers are now doing proof-of-work calculations to access many websites, because websites need to protect themselves from AI scrapers. That takes power! Let that sink in: every computer, tablet or phone on earth is now consuming more power *every time it accesses a webpage* because of "AI".

Higher voltages improve transistor performance but increase power dissipation and thus temperature. Temperature increases resistance which decreases propagation speed in wires. It's a delicate dance to keep a dynamic equilibrium of optimal power consumption, adequate performance and reliability. 30/31

That's because circuits degrade, and applying the wrong voltage can cause them to degrade faster. Circuit degradation is a research field of its own, but its effects are broadly the same: resistance in wires go up, capacity of trench capacitors go down, etc… and the combined effect of these changes is that circuits get slower and need more voltage to operate at the same frequency. 28/31

This happens when reading 8-bit registers such as AH or AL, which are just slices of larger integer registers, and don't have dedicated physical storage. The operation that pulls out the higher or lower 8 bits of the last 16 bits of a regular register is usually done via a multiplexer or MUX. 25/31

In older CPUs this voltage was fixed, but in modern ones it changes thousands of times per second to save power. Providing just as little voltage needed for a certain clock frequency can dramatically reduce power consumption, but providing too little voltage may cause a signal to arrive late, or the wrong signal to reach the pipeline register, causing in turn a cascade of failures. 24/31

The next cycle this result will be fed to the circuits that make up the next pipeline stage. If the result of the addition I mentioned is an address for example, then it might be used to access the cache. 23/31

If you've followed the controversy around Intel's first-generation Raptor Lake CPUs you'll know that they had issues that would cause seemingly random failures to happen. These bugs were caused by the wrong voltage being provided to the core under certain conditions which in turn would often cause a race condition within certain circuits leading to the wrong results being delivered. 21/31

If the updated microcode is loaded by the operating system it might be too late to reconfigure the core's operation, you'll need an updated UEFI firmware for some fixes to work. 20/31

Well, sometimes they can, sometimes they can't. CPUs are not purely hard-coded beasts, they rely on microcode for part of their operation. Traditionally microcode is a set of internal instructions that the CPU ran to execute external instructions. That's mostly not the case anymore, and modern microcode ships not only with implementations of complex instructions but also a significant amount of configuration. 16/31

These are not unlikely software bugs where you missed checking a particular condition at a specific time, and most of the time it doesn't matter except for that one time when it does. 14/31

Cache lines can be shared by different cores and must track their state, are they owned by a core? Shared? Is the data dirty locally and needs to be fetched remotely? 8/31

In the case of a misprediction the state of the "wrong" instructions needs to be discarded. Similarly instruction timing is not predictable anymore. Memory accesses can take anything from a few cycles to hundreds, and fetch their data through different structures both inside and outside of the core. 6/31

Hundreds of instructions can be in-flight at any given moment, each of them operates on physical registers which are assigned just-in-time via a mechanism that maps the registers in the ISA to spare physical slots in very large banks. Each instruction is associated with a set of data that is entirely speculative for a very long time, including the instruction itself. 5/31

In today's CPUs all these things are merely abstractions and the underlying physical reality is dramatically more complex. 4/31

In addition to ever increasing logic complexity the the conditions in which they operate have also changed: fixed voltages and frequencies are a thing of the past, complicating physical design. 2/31

In the early days of personal computing CPU bugs were so rare as to be newsworthy. The infamous Pentium FDIV bug is remembered by many, and even earlier CPUs had their own issues (the 6502 comes to mind). Nowadays they've become so common that I encounter them routinely while triaging crash reports sent from Firefox users. Given the nature of CPUs you might wonder how these bugs arise, how they manifest and what can and can't be done about them. 🧵 1/31

When talking about DRAM please don't use the term "shortage", call it what it is: price manipulation.

Shortages are when things you want to buy cannot be bought anywhere, but DDR5 memory kits are widely available. There's hundreds of different types in stock at online retailers. I've yet to see a kit that is actually out of stock. This is the tech industry attempt at keeping high margins at a time when computer sales were already predicted to be declining. Don't fall for it. It's a scam.

The price increases on RAM and SSDs are out of this world. Possibly above the 2020 profiteering. Just look at the graph below showing an almost 800% jump that went down to only 400% with the "generous discounts" of this time of year.

There is no way "demand" justifies this. This is vendors agreeing on jacking up the prices because they hoped that AI or Windows 10 planned obsolescence would drive up demand and it didn't. So now they have to find another way to please investors and shareholders.

A friend needed a new laptop and was about to buy some consumer-grade garbage for ~500-600€. Fortunately he asked me before committing to it, and we found a second-hand AMD-based Thinkpad T14 for 300€. It's stupidly powerful for what he does, has much better connectivity and a much sturdier case. It was in really good condition too.

Long story short, stay away from consumer laptops. There's second-hand business machines that are both better and cheaper.

This is a great explanation of what the front-lines look like in Ukraine, which is nothing like any other war. If new people are coming go check out those #introduction posts and do some boosting. We need to build an ever wider, more inclusive network.

If there's something that sets the fediverse apart is that we can build authentic social relationships here. This isn't just a surrogate of old media with the illusion of social interaction, like on the commercial platforms. Here the social aspect is at the very center of our experience.

Counterpoint: there are millions upon millions of old consoles readily available in the second hand market. They come with gigantic catalogs of old games, some of which all-time classics which you can sink hundreds of hours in. One of the side-effects of the AI bubble is that we stopped talking about alternative solutions to computing problems. Everything needs to be solved with "AI" - meaning an LLM - and nobody stops and asks if there is an alternative. This drives me mad because LLMs are not only unreliable, but also shockingly inefficient. And I'm positive that for most tasks there *is* an alternative algorithmic solution that is more reliable and less expensive.
