Just found december's #chipofthemonth, which is a 80x120 px 40 k(!) fps high-speed camera sensor with digital readout that sells at ~5 € a piece on digikey. Apparently by cutting down the exposure window, this thing can go up to 260 kfps. I wonder what you could do with a cheap, high speed camera sensor like that. According to the datasheet, apparently "gamer mouse frontend" is one of its applications. I might just get a few to try. The devkit is ~70 €.

I've got a new #KiCad plugin out in the KiCad plugin manager:

KiCoil generates "twisted" planar inductors. You can make it do one- or two-layer spiral inductors, toroid inductors, and many intermediate, hybrid variants in between spiral and toroid inductors.

These hybrid types have wider traces than a single-layer spiral, and have better high-frequency behavior (parasitic capacitance and self-resonant frequency) compared to two-layer spiral inductors. And they look really pretty!

I’m currently finishing up my PhD in EE/computer hardware security at TU Darmstadt and I’m looking for work starting January 2026.

I’m currently researching tamper-proof hardware, and I have decent skills at pretty much all stack layers from transistors to CSS. I’m proficient in electronics design/PCB layout, gateware and bare-metal firmware development, systems work from kernel to application programming.

Adding to the residence card thing, as a foreigner you are required to carry that thing at all times. Where I used to live in Tokyo, police would frequently randomly frisk passers by whenever some head of state was visiting the city. When they catch you without the residence card, they can jail you for several days while sorting out your residence status, and the fine is more than 1 k$ too.

that’s just what I figured out about that scheme while shopping for groceries just now. The reason people call schemes like this a privacy nightmare is that they are unavoidable once implemented while simultaneously having myriad possibly critical corner cases that each can have grave consequences up to the death of people (think for instance someone committing sucide due to being outed to their family). It’s just not something to fuck around with.

Finally, traffic analysis attacks undermine the whole secrecy idea of the system from the perspective of a network observer in any setting where verification is a rare occurrence, think e.g. the home router in a family home of four people, one of which is a LGBT teen looking for resources on sexuality. Using something like tor provides nothing in this setting since the traffic will still stand out badly.

Additionally, the verifying device has no way of verifying that the verification request actually comes from the website in question. For instance, a malicious news website could display a verification prompt that it proxies from say, a porn website that the user never visited. Afterwards, the porn website has a non-repudiated token that someone visited it, and the signature provider could link that token to a user identity.

I disagree that your protocol would not be a privacy nightmare. IMHO just the fact that your proposal leaks the fact that a verification was attempted to the government disqualifies it.

Additional problems that jump out to me on a very cursory reading are that it allows the requesting website to link the browser loading it to the verifying device, e.g. linking the device fingerprints of a laptop and a phone.

I feel like the contempt these machines receive is so much because we've just become accustomed to our clothing being disposable and made by people far away for little money. Anyone who doesn't appreciate sewing machines probably has never used one, and definitely has never done maintenance on or repaired one.
