Today we had to say goodbye to Betty White Holstein, our Boxer. Betty was diagnosed with mast cell carcinoma last June. In January we had to put her on a chemotherapy pill. The last two weeks she went downhill fast.

We want to thank Kindred Journey Veterinary End-of-Life Care Dr. Sierra for the compassionate attention she gave Betty.

And thanks to those of you in Nostrland who sent up prayers for us. They do help and are appreciated.

I have picked up some odd virus somewhere. It started about 9 days ago. By Thursday I was feeling bad enough to get a Rona/flu A/B test. Went to the doc Friday.

Doc gave me three steroid pills, an antibiotic, and a nebulizer treatment in office. I also go two prescriptions, and a follow up appointment.

The aggravating cough is almost gone, but I have zero stamina. I get tired walking across the room.

I had several gardening projects to get done that I haven’t even started.

Well! Where did THAT come from?

Since my girls have never laid dark eggs before, I suspect this is from one of the backyard neighbor ducks we took in last fall. Don’t fret. The egg is perfectly good.

Some duck breeds lay dark eggs at the start of the laying season then, like an emptying laser printer cartridge, they get lighter as time goes on.

Cayuga ducks, which I suspect these are, are the most well-known breed for dark eggs. The color comes from a heavy black pigment or “bloom” on the surface of the shell.

Good morning all y’all! Wow. Hard for me to get back in regular routine this week. Lost productive time yesterday getting ready for a checkup that ended up rescheduled. I did get a call to a surveyor for an estimate on dad’s place, and mine. My big goal for 2026 is getting 3-4 spots created for 4-wheeling campers, wanting a spot to stay to ride the Appalachian Outlaw Trail that opens 2 miles from here. Getting the property cleaned up now.

Things slowly coming together. Yesterday was unproductive where Christmas is concerned. Dad had dr appointment (scheduled), then to eat, then to Walmart for flu, and shingles vaccinations. He wanted to shop a bit, then home, dinner with Mr. Holstein, then choir practice.

Good evening all y’all! Boy howdy I am sore this tonight. I worked in the garden and chicken run all day. I pulled everything but kale and chard (gonna see how long they make it). I emptied the composter and put that on my containers. I covered them with wet cardboard to keep the chickens out. I emptied just about all the small containers and covered the soil with an old tarp.

I still need to clean the coop but my back just gave out. LOL

Did I tell you we added two ducks and four chicken hens to our flock this week? Brought them over on Wednesday.

There was a brown egg on the ground in the new birds run this morning. Two brown eggs yesterday, four the Wednesday. No new duck eggs. I figure by next week the shock should be over and production begins, but it's getting to the part of the year when they stop.

I am now at allergist. It’s shot day.
