did you know
- the nintendo switch 1 has an accessory called the "flip grip" that allows you to use it when rotated vertically
- the nintendo switch 1 has an active modding community which has ported ubuntu and fedora to it
- if your switch was made before 2019 it has a hardware vulnerability that makes it extremely easy to install these mods.
- these mods only exist in memory and on the sd card, so at any point you can just reboot your switch and it will go back to its unmodded state.
- MelonDS is cool :)

#videogames #emulation #modding

I swapped it for black plastic and it worked fine again. So, don't do that.

most roguelikes don't bear any resemblance to Rogue (1980). in the past I've joked that these non-Rogue roguelikes are "isaaclikes" because the binding of isaac really established the formula that everything else uses, with normal encounters and boss encounters and powerups that combine in novel ways and not a whole lot of tile-based dungeon crawling.

but it occurred to me today that there *is* something novel about Rogue that all the other "roguelikes" are faithful to. see, at first I wrote it off as just being "games where you can die", but that genre already exists and it's called "Arcade". if permadeath were the only requirement then tetris is a roguelike.

no, I think that the thing that makes Rogue a useful reference point is that "you can die, but you can also win." roguelikes have some sort of goal that you're working towards. I suppose some arcade games have an end boss, so it's also necessary to state that roguelikes have some sort of variability that prevents you from winning the same way every time. It's an "adapt and thrive" simulator.

so, in that sense, yeah, I finally understand why people looked at isaac and said it was "like Rogue." huh.

#videogames #roguelike
