I’m far from convinced that this is actually possible. It’s certainly not now — and I’m not talking about models. Testing and verification tools are nowhere near where they’d need to be, regardless of model quality. Today, code quality DOES still matter; even the best-case version of agentic engineering can’t produce code that’ll never require maintenance. But I can see a possible future where code quality might not matter, or will matter a lot less, and that’s FASCINATING. (3/3)

It’s maintenance, right? We care about readability because we know we’ll have to make changes, fix bugs, etc.

Code quality has always been ONE factor; it’s never been always the most important. Eg we often accept complex internals as the price for a clean external API; and we all write sloppy code for one-offs, prototypes, etc. So part of me accepts the “code quality doesn’t matter” argument. I can see a vision of agentic engineering with systems that prove correctness; if an agent produces code that is provably correct, maybe the quality really doesn’t matter! (2/3)

We put a huge emphasis on docs from day 1. Our policy has always been that new code can’t be merged unless it includes docs — we’ve held up major features because the docs weren’t done/good. That’s a virtuous cycle: good docs attract contributors who value good docs. So yeah it’s super intentional, and always nice to hear from someone that it seems to be working :)

Light and warm I can help with — that’s a backpacking quilt! Ultralight fabrics and high-quality down make for a ton of warmth with shockingly little weight: my lightest quilt weighs 430 grams (just under 1 lb) and keeps me warm down to freezing.

They’ve been tested on canyoneering trips — we use whistles to communicate over the sound of waterfalls; nothing else is piercing enough to cut through the thunder. These work as well as the gold standard Fox 40 Classic.

I print it florescent orange PLA, with an 0.6mm nozzle and 0.3mm layer height, and make lanyards out of orange paracord.

It’s really surprising how big a difference the diagonal bracing makes, especially on the open front and right hand side. The whole structure was disconcertingly wobbly without them, but once they were all up it’s now solid as a rock. Hexagons may be the bestagons but don’t sleep on triangles.

Marking and cutting the birdsmouth was actually really easy: no measuring, just put the rafter in position and a speed square to draw the vertical line, then the heel of the square to offset the horizontal. I was feeling all good about myself …

Until I tested the first cut rafter against the other side and discovered I’m 1” off on the other side. I’m going to have to mark and cut out each rafter individually. (Maybe every 2-3 can be the same.)

Frustrating, but not a huge mistake, oh well.

Nearly every project turns into an excuse to buy new tools — and for this project that tool was this new compressor. My existing compressor is huge and trips the over current protection on the EcoFlow. This building is far from power, and I really wanted to be able to use the framing nailer, it just saves so much time.

I’m pretty thrilled with the compressor. It’s powerful enough to keep up with the framing nailer, and I can’t believe how quiet it is; I’ve heard louder air conditioners!

(1) I went out last night with the laser and created a level reference line on all posts. Now I don’t need to check level on boards - I can just measure the same distance from reference on each post and be good.

(2) I made this little board hook jigs to hold the other end of boards - without that holding up a 20’ 2x4 would be impossible.

Got the posts stood up. I had to wait for a long block of uninterrupted time: this step isn’t something I wanted to do incrementally. The first few posts are very unstable, even with the temporary diagonal bracing, but the whole thing gets more and more stable as each post goes up and gets braced to its neighbors. Then, I went around and tweaked each post until was as close to plumb as possible. The temporary bracing will hold everything sturdy until the real framing goes up.

You may already be aware that dimensional lumber is a lie — a 2x4 for example is 1½” x 3½”.

But you may not have known that there are different standards for true dimensions, which is why I have to shave ¼” off my 6x6 post (really 5¾”) so that it fits into my 6x6 bracket (really 5½”).

That’s because I bought 6x6 “rough sawn”, but my brackets are designed for 6x6 “construction lumber”. Both are named “6x6”, neither is actually 6” square, each has different true dimensions.

Post bases are in. I did this the “wrong” way in that a pro would use bases that get set into wet concrete. But I was concerned about trying to do too many things at once, so I used anchors drilled into the dry concrete. This also gave me a final chance at adjustment - which I needed to get tue final layout square.

This is a cool milestone: I can finally take down the layout boards - with the bases in, there’s no more adjustment, the building is gonna be HERE.

Here’s all the lumber I’ll need for the project. I ordered it from our local building supply, and they delivered it for free within just a couple hours — super nice.

Next up: post bases. The piers are off by an inch or so here and there, which I planned compensate for because I’m using drilled anchors. But I’ll wait for my wife to get home to do that: she doesn’t make the silly math mistakes I do, and precise layout is way easier with two.

I guess the MudMixer I rented was busted, because the flow control was more like a rough suggestion than actual control 🤷🏻‍♂️

So I did 4 (of 6) posts mixing and pouring by hand and — all done! It’s certainly harder physically, but way less stressful since you can pause at any point without worrying about concrete setting up inside an expensive machine. With only 17 bags of concrete I’d probably all by hand next time.

I'm building a run-in shed for the horses, and for the first time in my building-things life, I fully modeled it in CAD. Originally I did this so I'd have an accurate cut list for ordering lumber and metal, but it's been WAY more useful than that. Viewing just specific parts multiple angles; custom drawings of specific layouts, even using analysis tools to figure out how much concrete I need. Super cool, I'm a convert.

OK, I finally have to buy a welder and learn to weld. The task is repairing my flail mower; the part I need to weld is approx 1/4” steel plate. I’m not interested in pretty welds, I just need to make it strong. I think I want either stick or flux core wire — I don’t want to fuck with gas. I have 240v available but I’d need to wire up a new outlet, so I’d prefer 120v if possible.

Ok keyboard enthusiasts I could use some help: I have a Keychron K1, with brown switches. I’m like 80% happy with it but looking around to see if I can hit 90 or 100%.

Problem 1 is the keys are a bit too stiff and clicky — I think that’s easily solved by going to red switches, right?

Problem 2 is that even the low-profile K1 isn’t low-profile enough, I’d like even thinner keys. Not quite MacBook-thin, but maybe halfway between there and the K1.

I'm gonna fix this right now. The intent always was that contributions to the broader Django ecosystem — which absolutely include Python — would qualify someone for membership. We in fact explicitly discussed weather core Python devs would qualify and determined yes. So it's 100% an unclear documentation problem which I will go fix right now.
