It's Indian-made, and an excellent design. I want one, and it's affordable. Will save for it in the meantime.

A vintage Platinum fountain pen I was given a couple of years ago writes so dry, I tried flossing the nib several times to no avail. I ended up transferring the inked cartridge to a Platinum Prefounte, which gave me no problems. I think I will just use the vintage pen as a dip pen. The nib writes well, when primed.

So I was at the Scribe Southern Caravan this afternoon. The Scribe Caravans are traveling popup pen stores that visit different cities in the Philippines. Scribe brick and mortar branches are concentrated in Metro Manila, so it makes sense for them to visit other metros and provincial cities so people can buy writing instruments and stationery. It's so hard to acquire because Pen and Message limit the number of bottles a person can buy from their shop in Japan, and you have to use a different credit card for each bottle (at least that's what I was told)! Newly-inked Pen Day. I bought this Jinhao 20 sparkly demonstrator with rose gold-plated nib and trim several months ago and only inked it now. I chose Teranishi Guitar Taisho Opera Rose for the ink, to match the trim. It's reasonably wet, I guess, as long as I store it horizontally. Thrilled, because it's so pretty!

I am home from volunteering at the Manila Pen Show 2026. The first day was crazy! I think we had 1800 people today! The ballroom was huge and there were like 70+ vendors, and so many people milling about. We volunteers ate lunch late, were powered by coffee, and adrenaline. Now I am worn out, but happy. Yes, I got my Opus 88 Mini Sakura pen, and a couple of Vinta inks. And was gifted a pen wrap. So much fun, but I'm tired and feel my age.

Cleaned my Hongdian M2, and the attached Long Knife nib. It had shimmer in it, which it handled very well. One plus was that if I did not want to write with broad strokes I could turn the nib over and write with the other side, which gives me a 0.8mm italic, I think. It remains a wet writer even upside-down.

Even in the shade, the Majohn Wancai Mini fountain pen in Peachy Pink (left) and Strawberry Pink (right) are very similar. The strawberry is just a tad rosier and more translucent. But both have the very fine blue and silver shimmers in the acrylic, so very pretty! Am not disappointed at all. Happy with my yellow and purple ones, too. But wondering about the baby blue one now.

While cleaning my pen box I rediscovered a never-been-inked Jinhao 80 (I had bought it in 3 colors, intending to gift some). I inked it from one of my sample vials, with Birmingham Sandstone. On paper Sandstone reminds me of both J. Herbin Cacao du Bresil and Montblanc Swan Illusion inks. A little pale and a vintage looking grey-brown. Enjoy the Mountain of Ink swatches below:

In my little quest to try inexpensive Chinese fountain pen inks in the market nowadays I have tried Jinhao, Hongdian and Ostrich brands. Ostrich Evening Mist is a grey-green/celadon color with a hint of blush pink in swatches that pool. Flow is good, no feathering or bleeding. It comes in 10ml and 30ml (on the Shopee platform). Best of all, it is very affordable (USD1.80 for 10ml, and USD5.60 for 30ml) since there are no tariffs. Sample is with indoor light on old TR paper.

Today's ink discovery: Jinhao 50ml Blue Black ink, for the amazing price of USD 3.10! The glass bottle looks like the Montblanc 50ml cube bottles with the little ridges. So I got one. According to Doodlebud's review it is somewhat water resistant (dye-based, not pigment), so that is another plus. I used to buy Pilot Blue Black for the slight water resistance, but that one is only 30ml, so the Jinhao is even cheaper.

New Year nerding out on pens: my friend Tim and I are discussing whether Sailor 14k or 21k gold nibs can be fitted into a Jowo size 6 nib unit housing so our other friend Paolo can put it in his Kasama fountain pen. In short, the 14k is too small and the feed dimensions and curvature will not fit. The 21k will possibly fit but the nib curvature is still an issue. What DOES fit is a Platinum 3776 Century 14k nib, with the Jowo feed and housing.

New pen day: Majohn P136 piston-filler is inspired by the Montblanc Blue Hour solitaire. What looks like blue patterned enamel are sandwiched blue resin over a patterned metal layer. There is no finial ornament, and "Majohn China" is written twice around the cap band. The nib is two-toned gold-plated steel F (0.5) and writes smoothly, pleasantly wet without laying too much liquid on the paper. Very well-machined. Got it for around USD 33. I like it very much.

So I sent it to the US to nibmeister Mike Masuyama so he could turn the nib into a medium cursive italic. Twelve years later, it is still going strong! Annoyed that the Monteverde mini converter I have does not fit the Kaweco Frost Sport. I had another Monteverde mini converter that fit the Kaweco Sport Durian LE. I could buy another one but there is no guarantee it will fit. Kaweco mini converters are so expensive. For the moment I am using a standard international cartridge in the Frost Sport (my first Kaweco, which initially had an equally annoying squeeze converter which I hate).

These are Atelier F pens - the F4 "Dalmajung" (left) and the F2 "Monstera" (right). The F4 has a full-sized piston converter while the F2 has a proprietary high-capacity cartridge. Sellers announced that there were new colors of Jinhao 20 released recently - from which I picked a sparkly transparent pink pen with rose gold trim in F nib. How could I resist? It is PINK, but not obnoxiously so. It is inexpensive enough for me not to worry about the plating deteriorating in the future (USD 7). I filled it with Robert Oster Hot Pink. It writes so well!

Gently cutting back on my coffee consumption from 2 x 150ml homemade cappuccinos to just 1 per day. The day of the supertyphoon we had no electricity or hot water so I could not make coffee. The next day I went to see friends in BGC and had to leave the house very early, so had no coffee. By 2pm I had a raging headache. I had a coffee immediately, but it refused to work. I had a paracetamol at home. Since the headache was bad I thought I would cut down on the caffeine for November.

It took a year for me to decide what design I wanted custom engraved on my Atelier F titanium fountain pen - and realized I could get a beautiful pen AND be a subtle fangirl at the same time. So I chose this Dalmajung design which I had their artist render to fit around the barrel. Dalmajung is the name of a BTS merch series on the theme of the Korean Harvest Moon festival. Attended the Muntinlupa Pelikan Hubs 2025 last Saturday (one of 13 locations in the Philippines). There were over 50 of us. We had lunch, a raffle, an ink bar, and a stamp and sticker station. We each got an ink, a pad and a postcard from Pelikan! Except I did not get the Apricot Achat ink of the year, I got Mandarin (part of the ink assortment our hub received). Here it is with my Pelikan M600.

Ok. So far, in the two weeks I have had all my retractable fountain pens inked,
1. Jinhao 10 EF nib is better than Jinhao 20 EF nib at keeping a seal. My silver stripe Jinhao 10 is writing well while the Jinhao 20 has dried up.
2. Jinhao 20 F nib on the other hand, remains a wet writer. So I suspect nib width has a lot to do with it.
3. Majohn A1 EF nib since the nib transplant has been writing consistently, but on the dry side. Works well with Pilot Iroshizuku inks. 1/n

Compare that to having to buy an entire nib unit for almost Php600/USD10.60! Am so pleased with it, it writes very well. Re-inked it with Pilot Iroshizuku Yama-budo.

Got another Kinbor A6 planner for 2026. I do not really need the pretty covers that they sell at Hobonichi since I have been reusing an A6 leather notebook cover from years ago. It was around Php650 (about USD 11.40) with free shipping, and the Bachuan paper is fountain pen-friendly. No ink feathering or bleeding or much ghosting on the other side of the page. Pretty pleased with it.

Youll be proud of me, pen peeps! I thought I would try to remove the old broken Majohn A1 nib from the nib unit while waiting for the new nibs to be delivered. The hardest part was shimming the side tabs off the feed. It took me 30 minutes of gentle handling, with a Swiss knife and a box cutter blade, and a rubber strip. It looks like a crime scene, but that is Pilot Iroshizuku Yama-budo, not blood, hahaha. Nib transplant report to follow.

Am so bummed. I had just filled my red Majohn A1 with Pilot Iroshizuku Yama-budo, when I fumbled and dropped it nib down. It hit the tile floor and one tine broke off. Sigh. I had to order a couple of replacement nibs (fortunately inexpensive) and figure out how to pull the old nib off the unit, and replace it with a new one. They did sell entire nib units, but those were half the price of an entire new Majohn A1, so I will try this hack first.

The Jinhao piston converter that fits the Jinhao 80 has a 3.4mm bore and fits the fountain pens sold at Flying Tiger Copenhagen stores in Manila. Or wherever there are FTC stores. My mom was gifted with two of these pens and they had previously been fitted with cartridges that came with the pen, which I refilled with a syringe, until I was able to buy a supply of 3.4mm bore cartridges. Now I can fill them from my ink bottles!

I have 3 Ecos, all of which I have dedicated to shimmer ink. And there is an ancient 540 which is amazingly still alive and has one of the best nibs ever. I had a 1.1 on a 580 before, but sold it because my grip does not agree with the untipped edge of the nib. But it works for most people I know!

Tested the Diamine Forever Ink in Passion Flower that I bought a couple of weeks ago. As a pigment ink it is indeed waterproof and permanent. There is no bleeding or feathering on 70gsm copy paper. There is some shading. I still have to ink a fountain pen with it, to determine the flow, but with a glass pen it writes just fine. As with all pigment ink, best not to let it dry up in your pen to avoid clogging.

I found an affordable glass pen from one of my seller friends. It is from 72 Brush Shop in Japan. I will claim it on Saturday. I know I said I am clumsy, but I have a 3D-printed pen rest that would be perfect and safe for it when I put it down in between sentences. I know it is not a fountain pen but of course I will be using it with fountain pen ink. Shimmer ink, preferably. It is so pretty.

Was cleaning out my Jinhao 82 which had Arcus Artisan Ink in Raven's Shadow in it since March. The pigment ink had dried out in the nib, so it was time to take the whole pen apart and give it a physical scrubbing. I like Raven's Shadow, it's just that next time I should only fill the converter halfway to make sure I consume it all while it has not dried out yet. I am not used to using pigment ink regularly, so this is part of my learning curve.

I normally do not buy a lot of ink cartridges because I prefer to use converters, but there are times they come in handy. Since I have a lot of Jinhao 82s and occasionally give some away to penable folks, I thought it would be nice to share a few cartridges with them too. Then I discovered that Jinhao cartridges with a 2.6mm bore fit them. So I ordered some. I also ordered some with a 3.4mm bore to fit various other Chinese pens I have. The 3.4mm ones arrived today.

New pen day was May 1st, but I only opened and inked the Wancher Puchico today. (Pictured to scale next to a Jinhao 82.) It is so tiny that it is by necessity an eyedropper, but if you post the cap it will fit neatly in the web of your thumb (I have a small hand). The F nib writes very well! It cost me about the same as a Lamy Safari.

My new toy arrived. For Php 410 or USD 7.30 I have a little 3-in-1 digital microscope that attaches to my Android phone! It comes with a stand, a usb c/micro usb/usb a cable, and connects to an app that allows me to take photos and videos! It also has its own adjustable LED lighting. The magnification is 50x-1000x. We have a number of very good reasonably-priced Filipino restaurants. I do not know them all, but I can recommend Manam (try their crispy pata and crispy sisig, and watermelon sinigang), and Mesa (similar selections). There is also the classic restaurant Barrio Fiesta. Also try the Romulo Cafe, and Abe restaurant.
