British train scheduling seems to be so incredibly bad this visit. In all my time living in London I never knew it to be so consistently bad. The only train I took that actually left on time was the train to Bristol - but half the train was missing so everyone's seat reservations were cancelled and everyone was packed into the remaining carriages. It arrived in Bristol late. On the return we had to wait for a driver to turn up. Meeting someone this morning and their train is late due to a cow on the tracks.

Something it took me many years to appreciate is this: a lot of constructions in algebra can be interpreted as figuring out what you can precompute when you're not sure what's coming next.

The first example I was taught may have been the free group on some generators. You're basically saying "well I don't know how to multiply these things so I'll just record whatever I need now so when I do learn how to multiply elements I've already done as much work as possible".

Sometimes there's even a kind of cost model. As I've mentioned before, a tensor product is basically what you need to store from x and y when you know that at some point in the future you're going to compute many bilinear functions f(x,y), but you don't know what f actually is, arbitrary multiplication is expensive, but memory is cheap along with addition and multiplication by a constant.

In a sense everything I said here is wrong. For example in mathematics you have considerable freedom to choose what sets actually represent a tensor product so it makes no sense to identify a construction with a particular "implementation". Nonetheless the definition of the tensor product corresponds well to the sort of interface you might attach to an obvious precomputation for the bilinear function scenario.

(I think this is basically summarising what a Left Kan extension is.)

When you compute a finite sum f(i) i = 1 .. n, there's a non-obvious subtlety that the sum comes to an abrupt end at i = n - and abrupt ends result in interesting phenomena that aren't always what you're interested in.

For example, it's well know that you get the Gibbs phenomenon when you partially sum the Fourier series for a square wave. But in some sense those wibbles aren't coming from the fact that you haven't summed all of the parts needed. They are, in a sense, because of that abrupt stop.

For example, I link [1] to an alternative way to approach the square wave using exponentials to feather out the sum rather than having a sharp cutoff - inspired by Tao's approach to summation [2]. You get nice smoothed square waves.

Anyway, this technique is called Abel summation and is in all the good Fourier transform textbooks. Engineers (including me when image processing over the years) sort of do this stuff all the time as well, using "windows" to smooth edges.

But in my head I hadn't related it back to the humble sum i=1 .. n in contexts outside of Fourier theory.

The useful thing to learn here is that sometimes it's not good to approach an infinite sum via partial sums of its terms because all you're doing is pushing those edge effects out to infinity. That doesn't remove them, even in the limit. This will change my perspective on a lot of phenomena, especially in physics.

I think that there are many problems where if you explore the space of possible solutions it turns out the space is full of good solutions. Often the Casimir force is presented as the consequence of summing 1+2+3+... and getting a -1/12 that contributes to the 240 in the standard Casimir force formula. But it's a bit nonsensical to just say we can replace an actual sum with an analytic continuation.

But the sum-to-integral formula is pretty nice and well behaved and fits physical intuition.

And also, you can now understand the Ramanujan number as coming from that 1/(exp(x)-1) which hints at why the analytic continuation isn't so evil after all. I wrote about it long ago and it appeared in This Week's Finds 126 [3].

When you have two plates held *very* close to each other, then the wavefunctions for particles are going to have some kind of boundary condition they need to satisfy at the plates. This means that your wavefunctions now have a discrete spectrum, typically with wavelengths that are an integer divisor of the plate spacing along the axis perpedicular to the plates. You go from a continuous spectrum to a discrete spectrum. S(D) is precisely the operator you need to study this.

There's a catch: in a vacuum in QFT you expect the energy in each harmonic of your wavefunction to be proportional to n, the divisor I mentioned. So you're computing the difference between an infinite sum and an infinite integral. You can apply the operator S(d/dn), but what does it mean?

We can turn to Terry Tao [2]. In the case of divergent sums, S(D) computes the difference between "smoothed sums" and "smoothed integrals". You're basically saying there is some cutoff in n at which point you don't care about the contributions, but then let that cutoff go to infinity. It makes physical sense, high frequency waves "don't care" about comparatively large gaps between plates.

Apply S(d/dn) to the function n->n and you get -1/12 as you see in Mathematica.

(The sign flip is because I'm considering sums n to infinity, not -infinity to n).

So you expect there to be an energy due to the plates and hence a force as you move them. So the Casimir force is basically a consequence of applying S(d/dn).

But I also did the computation a more traditional way as you can see in Mathematica. But there's a reason I did it the operator way...

Well you know how I like to mess with differential operators. So here's a fun example, arguing somewhat casually:

If D=d/dx

1/D is the inverse, the integration operator (but you need to take some care with the integration bounds to do this properly).

Then exp(D)f computes f(x+1) because it's just a Taylor expansion.

So exp(D)-1 is the finite difference operator.

And 1/(exp(D)-1) is the opposite of the finite difference, ie. sums. (It's the Euler-Maclaurin formula [1])

So S(D)=1/(exp(D)-1)-1/D is the integral-to-sum difference operator. The cool thing about S is that despite the 1/D, if you expand as a series S(D) is a genuine power series with no negative powers.

So where in physics might you need this...?

I personally take the view that if it's essential for survival we can't really ask why it's there without slipping into religion. So I'm not optimistic about discussion about why there is enough order out there for us to make a living.

But, one could ask how much more order there is than the bare minimum. Our ancestors didn't need general relativity for to climb down from the proverbial trees, nonetheless we do have it now. Should I be surprised that we found this extra regularity that wasn't required for survival? I don't know how to measure how surprised I should be. I certainly wouldn't expect that the only physics we have is precisely the bare minimum for survival - survival just gives the lower bound. But maybe it is surprising we're able to make accurate testable predictions about, say, black hole collisions.

But anyway, none of this changes my belief that pure mathematics was built on empirical principles much like physics.

Entropy of mixing is confusing. If entropy is based on probabilities and probabilities are subjective, what does it mean when you think something has high entropy because it was mixed but then you learn that you can undo it?

I always thought of Riemann surfaces as the meeting point of 3 disciplines but not the same 3 as you :) A Riemann surface is a certain type of field (in the algebraic sense) giving a purely algebraic definition. It's the same as the algebraic geometry definition really but shifts the emphasis.

This was my problem as a student. I studied Riemann surfaces (not Riemannian manifolds). You can view Riemann surfaces as complex analysis things or as algebraic geometry things. Technically the same object. But they look very different. Sometimes constructions are better from one viewpoint or the other and I was limited mostly to the former.

Eg. the Riemann-Roch theorem is a classic algebraic geometry result that I learnt via an analytic argument.

If you have a real symmetric matrix A, and pick some unit vector x, then it's standard textbook material that x.Ax (the Rayleigh quotient) is bounded by the smallest and largest eigenvalues. So what happens if I pick a random unit vector, how is x.Ax distributed?

Let's jump to the case of a Hermitian matrix A and a random unit vector on the complex sphere. How is T=conj(x).A.x distributed? Again it's standard that it's bounded between the smallest and largest eigenvalue.

We can start with a 2x2 matrix A. First surprise to me: T is distributed *uniformly* between the two eigenvalues.

The first plot below is the histogram of values of T for 1,000,000 vectors x and a randomly chosen Hermitian matrix A. The yellow lines mark the two eigenvalues.

Now try 3x3. Remarkably the distribution is piecewise linear with the break points at the eigenvalues.

And let's jump to 5x5. We get the third plot, whose curve is given by a cubic B-spline with control points given by the eigenvalues.

Bizarrely you can prove you always get B-splines making this one of the few times I've seen B-splines in "nature", so to speak.

My experience so far with LLMs when coding is that they don't write great code, and trying to get them to write working code is a massive time sink which I quickly learnt not to get caught in.

But their suggestions often use libraries, APIs and techniques that I was previously unaware of. They give good examples of use and they're also very good at showing idiomatic ways of doing things. So I think I myself will benefit a lot if I have the sense not to directly use the code they generate.

Generate and test and learn and understand, don't simply generate.

Google X (where I worked for several years) was explicitly created to emulate Bell Labs. To some extent that may have been real, but it may also have played some more nefarious marketing purpose.

It doesn't sound as freewheeling as AT&T. Nobody would have said "I’ve always pursued my interests without much regard for final value or value to the world" - well not aloud anyway. But they did hire tinkerers and mad scientists and it was pretty open to employees suggesting new lines of inquiry without burdensome cost-benefit analyses. Sergey Brin was pretty adamant that it was his job to worry about expenses, not ours.

I don't think Google X is widely perceived as a success, and in more recent times my ex-colleagues there have been less happy, but I can't walk more than a minute in San Francisco without seeing a Waymo taxi, and more significantly "Attention is all You Need" is probably one of the most influential papers ever published and IMO will likely eventually have a major impact on the future of humanity. (Not necessarily for the better, of course.)

There's a long exercise I did years ago that goes something like this:

You usually think of classical mechanics as the classical limit of quantum mechanics but this isn't quite true in the form classical mechanics is written.

In QM the field is exp(i∫L(x,∂x)Dx) where the integral is a path integral over all paths that satisfy some constraints at the start end end point of the dynamics you're considering. If you hold the start point constant this field is a function of the end point and is the thing we usually solve for in the Schrodinger equation.

You can also write classical (point particle) mechanics in terms of fields, but this time the field is given by the inf of L(x,∂x) over all paths. You can extract actual motions from these fields or you can study these "fields" in their own right. Usually we discard the actual value of L. You can mimic much of the theory of QM in this classical setting.

If you're like me you have better intuition about Fourier transforms than Legendre transforms but this alternative classical frameworks allows you to use knowledge about Fourier transforms to reason using Legendre transforms. Partly it comes down to looking closely at what the boundary conditions are, ie. the constraints you impose at start and end of the trajectory - eg. you have to work with a different field if your boundary specifies momentum rather than position and there are mixtures like known momentum at the start and known position at the end. It's all very analogous to switching from position to momentum in QM by taking the Fourier transform.

I know of one paper that does something like this. It's in an optics journal and could take a long time to find again...

If you're minimising a quadratic function of a vector it's standard to write it as a quadratic form xᵗQx. Eg. if we're minimising (Mx)² we can convert it to standard form as x·MᵗMx. When we write the Lagrangian, which is really a quadratic form, in the usual way we write Lagrangians, we're not writing it in the usual way for quadratic forms.

We when we write T = ½(∂x)·(∂x) we've flipped the sign from the standard form T = -½x·∂ᵗ∂x. This means we write Lagrangians less symmetrically.
