Since it would as well require revealing information about other applications to a spooky third party. There's this tension where like, gnome wants to say "no you're not allowed to use any third party replacements for gnome applications, which are privileged". The one I always get annoyed by is screenshots, but it's broadly a PITA.

So if you put a single bool in a struct, you'll get a struct with 1 byte size, and 1 byte alignment. pack solves a different problem, and ignores alignment completely, meaning that as the programer you need to respect platform requirements yourself, or introduce UB in your program. Also sizeof(bool) can in fact be greater than 1, it's just rare and not important for the main platforms in PC dev.

I imagine this is a recurring problem in the "soup of microservices" model generally, because it so effectively obfuscates the work that's actually happening. Here it looks like watching a list for changes is likely done in a pretty naive way and it causes very poor scaling.

It's of course a subtle problem to explain to users, but it's totally valid for kicad to rant about it when their application won't ever work with a native Wayland backend, and when the blowback of that affects users in practice.

A Mac mini drawing 0.5W (this is the actual specs of the device, turning it off reduces this to 0.1W) in sleep mode isn't going to impact that. Multiplying the other way, the yearly power draw of a Mac Mini always on in sleep mode is approximately 4.4kWh / year.

So in order to be unnoticed the attacker would need to be able to deconstruct the device without damaging it, and then re-construct it in a plausible way. The second step in particular is not easy since yubikeys are a single piece of molded plastic. They don't have seams. (Whether people would notice seams appearing on their own device? hard to say)

Not saying it isn't bad, but there's still a fundamental difference between "if you get connected to the CAN you can drive the car away", and "if you can get a high performance oscilloscope probe directly onto the package, and you already have the first party authentication, you can extract the key"

Defaulting to having a red hot go even if it's always going to be somewhat flakey because it (hopefully) can't really be worse. (Conversely if you tried to add this to C++ I think it'd be borderline useless as it's hard enough keeping track of how *well behaved* functions behave across multiple stdlib implementations)
