i think it was epstein, not thiel, who said something about "return to tribalism" or similar. i have no idea if it was actually epstein's belief or just epstein's attempt to ingratiate himself to peter thiel by expressing views he thought thiel held, because epstein did that sort of chameleon-like switching up of what he claimed to be interested in basically constantly.

i would guess that well over 50% of americans alive today have no idea that russia was even involved in the war.

it's true, to some extent i am always coasting on fumes from when i did this professionally. i corrected my post with the new information about the opening up of the restrictions in april (though there are still very much restrictions!) but gd does this person not realize that the fact that the rules changed a few months ago doesn't change the history of argentinians accumulating USDT?

yeah i dunno where i'd draw the line for "hyperinflation" vs. regular "really bad inflation", maybe around 100% per year or something. but like you said, kind of a distinction w/out a difference. at a certain point you just automatically start trying to move all your money to a stabler currency, and that point is probably lower than 47%.

p.s. turkey has been struggling w/around 70% inflation and USDT is also popular there, but they have no capital controls so they can also just buy dollars.

the US dollar might be sliding in value but inflation in argentina hit something like 300% a few months ago so it's not really comparable. they love dollars.

also just to clarify, i haven't seen good information about how this works w/argentinian pesos, but the tripartite money laundry between china -> mexican cartels -> american consumers is extremely well documented. i've also seen some information on how this works in the european context w/the italian mafia and dubai cartels,

but you're right that someone somewhere has to use those pesos to buy the dollars. i don't have any good information on this but generally speaking that's almost always where the chinese mafia and the drug cartels etc come in.

this is just extremely wild guesswork but the worst possible case would be tether has no cash and is facing a wave of redemption requests (people trying to turn their USDT tokens into cash) that it cannot meet and a lot of those are coming from argentinians trying to get cash during the market crisis that started in argentina a few days ago, and so the cash would go from US Treasury -> Argentina -> Tether treasury -> Tether customers.

but there are a million other possible scenarios. it's totally plausible that there's no connection here and Tether bros are just trying to cash out their equity.

i’m sorry but it is incredibly suspicious to me that the US Treasury fund #Bessent wants to use to bail out #Argentina and Javier #Milei is almost exactly the same size as the amount of money #Tether is suddenly trying to raise via a “private placement”.

Tether is one of the most profitable companies in the history of the world, at least according to their own unaudited / unverified numbers. There should be no reason for them to need to raise capital and no desire on their part to sell off part of their cash cow.

Puting aside for a moment the absurdity of the idea that the central bank of international criminal finance considers itself to be in the same league as companies like Google, Nvidia, and Tesla, I can think of 3 possible explanations:

1. Tether is (somehow) out of cash. This is lent some credence by the fact that they are failing to pay their electricity bill in #Uruguay and had their power turned off a few weeks ago.

2. Tether wants to get some shares into the hands of corrupt government officials (other than Howard “Nutlick” #Lutnick, who already has some) for protection.

3. Now that the #Fed has pivoted and cut rates Tether’s income is about to start dropping (and the more the fed cuts, the more it will drop) so they are just cashing out the founders at the top. This is the most charitable interpretation.

it’s also worth mentioning that:

1. Tether’s #USDT token is very popular with #Argentinians trying to avoid that country’s hyperinflation. While technically illegal because of capital controls, it’s still a “crime” I have some sympathy for. But it does mean there’s an important connection between Tether and Argentina.

2. Tether is a major shareholder in south american agriculture business #Adecoagro which does a lot of work in Argentina.
