Nun lese ich, dass auch im Bericht des Berliner Verfassungsschutzes die Intervention in Debatten um "Datensouveränität" (S. 21) oder Verweise auf "Technofaschismus" (S. 50) als verdächtig gelten. Es gibt viele Gründe "KI" abzuschalten: Extraktivismus, Neokolonialismus, Lohndruck, Deskilling, Verdummung uvm. Für die taz (npub14na…rwkr) habe ich einen anderen Aspekt fokussiert: Die entmenschlichende Gewalt, die in jeder Musterreproduktion liegt.

Entmenschlichung ist bei "KI" kein Designfehler, der durch bessere Daten, Open Source oder ethische Guidelines vermieden werden kann. "KI" ist deshalb inhärent unvereinbar mit emanzipierten, egalitären Gesellschaftsmodellen.

Jetzt gerade wird in Deutschland ein ähnliches Exempel an Menschen statuiert, die aus Solidarität mit den Kriegsopfern in Palästina gegen Rüstungskonzerne in Deutschland aktiv wurden: Die sogenannten #Ulm5 stehen in Stuttgart-Stammheim vor Gericht und das Verfahren strotzt vor Eingriffen in die Rechte der Angeklagten.

Wir müssen uns darauf einstellen, dass auch deutsche Gerichte am Feindbild "Linksextrem" mitbauen werden. Und das wird nicht bei Aktionen wie solchen der #Ulm5 stehen bleiben.

When it comes to progressive tech policy, Open-Source is usually included as a (supposed) lever for good. To me OS is much more a distraction from than a helpful answer to the structural problems of the status quo. Aline Blankertz (npub1l7g…nudk) just published a very on-point blog post about just that. Daran wird sich auch nichts ändern, solange diese Leute nach ihrer Ernennung als völlig legitime Stimmen auf den Bühnen und Panels willkommen geheißen werden. Sie sind Symptome der Instrumentalisierung von Datenschutz im Dienste wirtschaftlicher Interessen. Behandelt sie entsprechend. Widerstand startet dort, wo andere mitspielen.

As I read Cory Doctorow (npub1fdr…lvhs), his goal is not to overcome capitalism but to reform it into a more "ethical, good version of capitalism". If one, however, actually fights to overcome capitalism there are significant differences between these struggles. To recognize that does not mean he wont' be an ally on the way but it also does not require calling him more than he is: A very smart writer who entertainingly hates of some symptoms of capitalism without questioning it fundamentally.

Wer sich für eine Gesellschaft ohne Kapitalismus einsetzt, ist nicht das Pendant zu einer radikalen Rechten, die Menschen nach völkischen Maßstäben deportieren und vernichten will. Dass der Spiegel entgegen aller bekannten Kritik am Verfassungschutz (am Jahrestag von Hanau noch dazu) dessen Gleichsetzung von Demokratie mit Kapitalismus hörig übernimmt, ist alarmierend.

What is missing is a structural critique of technological progress and "innovation" within capitalism and the limited effect of regulation in face of conflicting economic dynamics. This is especially unfortunate because the book does reference the luddite-movement and authors like Jathan Sadowski. Sadly, there is a "but". It awaits in the final chapter where Bender and Hanna include a "what do we do now"-section. To give praise where praise is due: They actually do recommend to simply not use "AI" and they recommend to ridicule people and corporations that do. With these suggestions they already move beyond 90 % of the critical-AI-books.

The book absolutely does deliver when it comes to deconstructing the hype. The majority of the book carefully disassembles the false promises of "AI" in education, science, the justice system or within social services. You will get a good understanding of the specific and narrow capabilities of the technologies behind "AI" (machine learning, pattern recognition, content synthesis). And you will have a good understanding of why the current use of "AI" so non-sensical, misplaced and dangerous.

It has been a while since I felt as torn about a book as I do with "The AI Con" (2025) by Prof. Emily M. Bender(she/her) (npub15xv…0jms) and Alex Hanna (npub1e2z…n97d). Both are well respected experts, not only regarding their expertise but also regarding their personal conviction.

The German (the only one I can speak to with confidence) judiciary is full of people filtered to fit a certain social group/political orientation. Few are willing to reflect the role their actions play in maintaining our racist, patriarchal society. And it shows in their debates about digital tools which are looked at with little criticism as ways to manage workloads instead of individual justice.

(But again: What justice is there with unjust laws to begin with?)
